God is jealous, and the LORD avenges; The LORD avenges and is furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies;

The LORD is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and wrath. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and furiously destroys his enemies!

But GOD doesn't lose his temper. He's powerful, but it's a patient power. Still, no one gets by with anything. Sooner or later, everyone pays. Tornadoes and hurricanes are the wake of his passage, Storm clouds are the dust he shakes off his feet.

GOD is good, a hiding place in tough times. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help,

The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.

The LORD is good. When trouble comes, he is a strong refuge. And he knows everyone who trusts in him.

No matter how desperate the trouble. But cozy islands of escape He wipes right off the map. No one gets away from God.

but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into darkness.

Why waste time conniving against GOD? He's putting an end to all such scheming. For troublemakers, no second chances.

Whatever they plot against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.

What do you conspire against the LORD? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.

Why are you scheming against the LORD? He will destroy you with one blow; he won't need to strike twice!

Like a pile of dry brush, Soaked in oil, they'll go up in flames.

They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.

For while tangled like thorns, And while drunken like drunkards, They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.

His enemies, tangled up like thorns, staggering like drunks, will be burned like dry straw in a field.

Nineveh's an anthill of evil plots against GOD, A think tank for lies that seduce and betray.

From you, O Nineveh, has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and counsels wickedness.

From you comes forth one Who plots evil against the LORD, A wicked counselor.

Who is this king of yours who dares to plot evil against the LORD?

And GOD has something to say about all this: "Even though you're on top of the world, With all the applause and all the votes, you'll be mowed down flat. "I've afflicted you, Judah, true, but I won't afflict you again.

This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be cut off and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, O Judah, I will afflict you no more.

Thus says the LORD: "Though they are safe, and likewise many, Yet in this manner they will be cut down When he passes through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more;

This is what the LORD says: "Even though the Assyrians have many allies, they will be destroyed and disappear. O my people, I have already punished you once, and I will not do it again.

From now on I'm taking the yoke from your neck and splitting it up for kindling. I'm cutting you free from the ropes of your bondage." [JC]

GOD's orders on Nineveh: "You're the end of the line. It's all over with Nineveh. I'm gutting your temple. Your gods and goddesses go in the trash. I'm digging your grave. It's an unmarked grave. You're nothing--no, you're less than nothing!"

The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: "You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the carved images and cast idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile."

The LORD has given a command concerning you: "Your name shall be perpetuated no longer. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the molded image. I will dig your grave, For you are vile."

And this is what the LORD says concerning the Assyrians in Nineveh: "You will have no more children to carry on your name. I will destroy all the idols in the temples of your gods. I am preparing a grave for you because you are despicable and don't deserve to live!"

Look! Striding across the mountains--a messenger bringing the latest good news: peace! A holiday, Judah! Celebrate! Worship and recommit to God! No more worries about this enemy. This one is history. Close the books.

Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.

Behold, on the mountains The feet of him who brings good tidings, Who proclaims peace! O Judah, keep your appointed feasts, Perform your vows. For the wicked one shall no more pass through you; He is utterly cut off.

For the land of Israel lies empty and broken after your attacks, but the LORD will restore its honor and power again.

Weapons flash in the sun, the soldiers splendid in battle dress, Chariots burnished and glistening, ready to charge, A spiked forest of brandished spears, lethal on the horizon.

The shields of his soldiers are red; the warriors are clad in scarlet. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day they are made ready; the spears of pine are brandished.

The chariots race recklessly along the streets and through the squares, swift as lightning, flickering like torches.

The Assyrian king rallies his men, but they stagger and stumble. They run to the ramparts to stem the tide, but it's too late.

He summons his picked troops, yet they stumble on their way. They dash to the city wall; the protective shield is put in place.

He remembers his nobles; They stumble in their walk; They make haste to her walls, And the defense is prepared.

The king shouts to his officers; they stumble in their haste, rushing to the walls to set up their defenses.

Soldiers pour through the gates. The palace is demolished.

The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses.

The gates of the rivers are opened, And the palace is dissolved.

But too late! The river gates are open! The enemy has entered! The palace is about to collapse!

Soon it's all over: Nineveh stripped, Nineveh doomed, Maids and slaves moaning like doves, beating their breasts.

Nineveh's exile has been decreed, and all the servant girls mourn its capture. Listen to them moan like doves; watch them beat their breasts in sorrow.

Nineveh is a tub from which they've pulled the plug. Cries go up, "Do something! Do something!" but it's too late. Nineveh's soon empty--nothing.

Nineveh is like a pool, and its water is draining away. "Stop! Stop!" they cry, but no one turns back.

Though Nineveh of old was like a pool of water, Now they flee away. "Halt! Halt!" they cry; But no one turns back.

Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir! The people are slipping away. "Stop, stop!" someone shouts, but the people just keep on running.

Other cries come: "Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! A bonanza of plunder! Take everything you want!"

Take spoil of silver! Take spoil of gold! There is no end of treasure, Or wealth of every desirable prize.

Doom! Damnation! Desolation! Hearts sink, knees fold, stomachs retch, faces blanch.

She is pillaged, plundered, stripped! Hearts melt, knees give way, bodies tremble, every face grows pale.

She is empty, desolate, and waste! The heart melts, and the knees shake; Much pain is in every side, And all their faces are drained of color.1

Soon the city is an empty shambles, stripped of its wealth. Hearts melt in horror, and knees shake. The people stand aghast, their faces pale and trembling.

So, what happened to the famous and fierce Assyrian lion And all those cute Assyrian cubs? To the lion and lioness Cozy with their cubs, fierce and fearless?

Where now is the lions' den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear?

Where is the dwelling of the lions, And the feeding place of the young lions, Where the lion walked, the lioness and lion's cub, And no one made them afraid?

Where now is that great Nineveh, lion of the nations, full of fight and boldness, where the old and feeble and the young and tender lived with nothing to fear?

To the lion who always returned from the hunt with fresh kills for lioness and cubs, The lion lair heaped with bloody meat, blood and bones for the royal lion feast? [JC]

The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey.

The lion tore in pieces enough for his cubs, Killed for his lionesses, Filled his caves with prey, And his dens with flesh.

O Nineveh, you were once a mighty lion! You crushed your enemies to feed your cubs and your mate. You filled your city and your homes with captives and plunder.

"Assyria, I'm your enemy," says GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies. "I'll torch your chariots. They'll go up in smoke. "Lion Country' will be strewn with carcasses. The war business is over--you're out of work: You'll have no more wars to report, No more victories to announce. You're out of war work forever."

"I am against you," declares the LORD Almighty. "I will burn up your chariots in smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions. I will leave you no prey on the earth. The voices of your messengers will no longer be heard."

"Behold, I am against you," says the LORD of hosts, "I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall be heard no more."

Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery. Its victim never departs.

How terrible it will be for Nineveh, the city of murder and lies! She is crammed with wealth to be plundered.

Horns blaring, wheels clattering, horses rearing, chariots lurching,

The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots!

The noise of a whip And the noise of rattling wheels, Of galloping horses, Of clattering chariots!

Listen! Hear the crack of the whips as the chariots rush forward against her. Wheels rumble, horses' hooves pound, and chariots clatter as they bump wildly through the streets.

Horsemen galloping, brandishing swords and spears, Dead bodies rotting in the street, corpses stacked like cordwood, Bodies in every gutter and alley, clogging every intersection!

Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! Many casualties, piles of dead, bodies without number, people stumbling over the corpses-

Horsemen charge with bright sword and glittering spear. There is a multitude of slain, A great number of bodies, Countless corpses-- They stumble over the corpses--

See the flashing swords and glittering spears in the upraised arms of the cavalry! The dead are lying in the streets--dead bodies, heaps of bodies, everywhere. People stumble over them, scramble to their feet, and fall again.

And whores! Whores without end! Whore City, Fatally seductive, you're the Witch of Seduction, luring nations to their ruin with your evil spells. [JC]

all because of the wanton lust of a harlot, alluring, the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved nations by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft.

Because of the multitude of harlotries of the seductive harlot, The mistress of sorceries, Who sells nations through her harlotries, And families through her sorceries.

All this because Nineveh, the beautiful and faithless city, mistress of deadly charms, enticed the nations with her beauty. She taught them all to worship her false gods, enchanting people everywhere.

"I'm your enemy, Whore Nineveh--I, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies! I'll strip you of your seductive silk robes and expose you on the world stage. I'll let the nations get their fill of the ugly truth of who you really are and have been all along.

All who see you will shrink back in horror and say, `Nineveh lies in utter ruin.' Yet no one anywhere will regret your destruction."

Do you think you're superior to Egyptian Thebes, proudly invincible on the River Nile, Protected by the great River, walled in by the River, secure?

Are you better than Thebes, situated on the Nile, with water around her? The river was her defense, the waters her wall.

Yet Thebes fell, and her people were led away as captives. Her babies were dashed to death against the stones of the streets. Soldiers cast lots to see who would get the Egyptian officers as servants. All their leaders were bound in chains.

Expect the same treatment, Nineveh. You'll soon be staggering like a bunch of drunks, Wondering what hit you, looking for a place to sleep it off.

You too will become drunk; you will go into hiding and seek refuge from the enemy.

And you, Nineveh, will also stagger like a drunkard. You will hide for fear of the attacking enemy.

All your forts are like peach trees, the lush peaches ripe, ready for the picking. One shake of the tree and they fall straight into hungry mouths.

All your fortresses are like fig trees with their first ripe fruit; when they are shaken, the figs fall into the mouth of the eater.

All your strongholds are fig trees with ripened figs: If they are shaken, They fall into the mouth of the eater.

All your fortresses will fall. They will be devoured like the ripe figs that fall into the mouths of those who shake the trees.

Face it: Your warriors are wimps. You're sitting ducks. Your borders are gaping doors, inviting your enemies in. And who's to stop them? [JC]

Look at your troops- they are all women! The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has consumed their bars.

Store up water for the siege. Shore up your defenses. Get down to basics: Work the clay and make bricks.

Get ready for the siege! Store up water! Strengthen the defenses! Make bricks to repair the walls! Go into the pits to trample clay, and pack it into molds!

Sorry. Too late. Enemy fire will burn you up. Swords will cut you to pieces. You'll be chewed up as if by locusts. [JC] Yes, as if by locusts--a fitting fate, for you yourselves are a locust plague.

Your bureaucrats are locusts, your brokers and bankers are locusts. Early on, they're all at your service, full of smiles and promises, But later when you return with questions or complaints, you'll find they've flown off and are nowhere to be found.
