After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

Later Jesus was going about his business in Galilee. He didn't want to travel in Judea because the Jews there were looking for a chance to kill him.

His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

His brothers said, "Why don't you leave here and go up to the Feast so your disciples can get a good look at the works you do?

Jesus' brothers said to him, "You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do.

His brothers therefore said to Him, "Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing.

and Jesus' brothers urged him to go to Judea for the celebration. "Go where your followers can see your miracles!" they scoffed.

For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

No one who intends to be publicly known does everything behind the scenes. If you're serious about what you are doing, come out in the open and show the world."

No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world."

For neither did his brethren believe in him.

The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

The Jewish leaders tried to find him at the festival and kept asking if anyone had seen him.

And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

There was a lot of contentious talk about him circulating through the crowds. Some were saying, "He's a good man." But others said, "Not so. He's selling snake oil."

Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, "He is a good man."
John.7.12
And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, "He is good"; others said, "No, on the contrary, He deceives the people."

There was a lot of discussion about him among the crowds. Some said, "He's a wonderful man," while others said, "He's nothing but a fraud, deceiving the people."

Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

This kind of talk went on in guarded whispers because of the intimidating Jewish leaders.
John.7.13
Others replied, "No, he deceives the people." But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the Jews.

However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

But no one had the courage to speak favorably about him in public, for they were afraid of getting in trouble with the Jewish leaders.

Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

With the Feast already half over, Jesus showed up in the Temple, teaching.

Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.

And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

The Jews were impressed, but puzzled: "How does he know so much without being schooled?"

The Jewish leaders were surprised when they heard him. "How does he know so much when he hasn't studied everything we've studied?" they asked.

Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

Jesus said, "I didn't make this up. What I teach comes from the One who sent me.

Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me.

Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

So Jesus told them, "I'm not teaching my own ideas, but those of God who sent me.

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Anyone who wants to do his will can test this teaching and know whether it's from God or whether I'm making it up.

If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.

If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.

Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.

He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

A person making things up tries to make himself look good. But someone trying to honor the one who sent him sticks to the facts and doesn't tamper with reality.

He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.

He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.

Those who present their own ideas are looking for praise for themselves, but those who seek to honor the one who sent them are good and genuine.

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?
John.7.19
It was Moses, wasn't it, who gave you God's Law? But none of you are living it. So why are you trying to kill me?"

Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"

Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?"

None of you obeys the law of Moses! In fact, you are trying to kill me."

The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

The crowd said, "You're crazy! Who's trying to kill you? You're demon-possessed."

"You are demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?"

The people answered and said, "You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?"

The crowd replied, "You're demon possessed! Who's trying to kill you?"

Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

Jesus said, "I did one miraculous thing a few months ago, and you're still standing around getting all upset, wondering what I'm up to.

Jesus said to them, "I did one miracle, and you are all astonished.

Jesus replied, "I worked on the Sabbath by healing a man, and you were offended.

Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

Moses prescribed circumcision--originally it came not from Moses but from his ancestors--and so you circumcise a man, dealing with one part of his body, even if it's the Sabbath.

Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath.

Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

But you work on the Sabbath, too, when you obey Moses' law of circumcision. (Actually, this tradition of circumcision is older than the law of Moses; it goes back to Abraham.)

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

You do this in order to preserve one item in the Law of Moses. So why are you upset with me because I made a man's whole body well on the Sabbath?

Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath?

If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

For if the correct time for circumcising your son falls on the Sabbath, you go ahead and do it, so as not to break the law of Moses. So why should I be condemned for making a man completely well on the Sabbath?

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Don't be nitpickers; use your head--and heart!-to discern what is right, to test what is authentically right."

Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment."

Think this through and you will see that I am right."

Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

That's when some of the people of Jerusalem said, "Isn't this the one they were out to kill?

At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?
John.7.25
Now some of them from Jerusalem said, "Is this not He whom they seek to kill?
John.7.25
Some of the people who lived there in Jerusalem said among themselves, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?
John.7.26
But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
John.7.26
And here he is out in the open, saying whatever he pleases, and no one is stopping him. Could it be that the rulers know that he is, in fact, the Messiah?
John.7.26
Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ?

But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ?

But here he is, speaking in public, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that our leaders know that he really is the Messiah?

Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

And yet we know where this man came from. The Messiah is going to come out of nowhere. Nobody is going to know where he comes from."

But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."

But how could he be? For we know where this man comes from. When the Messiah comes, he will simply appear; no one will know where he comes from."

Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

That provoked Jesus, who was teaching in the Temple, to cry out, "Yes, you think you know me and where I'm from, but that's not where I'm from. I didn't set myself up in business. My true origin is in the One who sent me, and you don't know him at all.

Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,

While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he called out, "Yes, you know me, and you know where I come from. But I represent one you don't know, and he is true.

Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

They were looking for a way to arrest him, but not a hand was laid on him because it wasn't yet God's time.

Then the leaders tried to arrest him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.

And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

Many from the crowd committed themselves in faith to him, saying, "Will the Messiah, when he comes, provide better or more convincing evidence than this?"

Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, "When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?"

And many of the people believed in Him, and said, "When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?"

Many among the crowds at the Temple believed in him. "After all," they said, "would you expect the Messiah to do more miraculous signs than this man has done?"

The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

The Pharisees, alarmed at this seditious undertow going through the crowd, teamed up with the high priests and sent their police to arrest him.

The Jews put their heads together. "Where do you think he is going that we won't be able to find him? Do you think he is about to travel to the Greek world to teach the Jews?

The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

Then the Jews said among themselves, "Where does He intend to go that we shall not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

The Jewish leaders were puzzled by this statement. "Where is he planning to go?" they asked. "Maybe he is thinking of leaving the country and going to the Jews in other lands, or maybe even to the Gentiles!

What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

What is he talking about, anyway: "You will look for me, but you won't find me,' and "Where I am, you can't come'?"

In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

Others said, "He is the Christ."

Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Will the Christ come out of Galilee?

Others said, "He is the Messiah." Still others said, "But he can't be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee?

Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

Don't the Scriptures tell us that the Messiah comes from David's line and from Bethlehem, David's village?"

Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?"

Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?"

For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born."

That's when the Temple police reported back to the high priests and Pharisees, who demanded, "Why didn't you bring him with you?"

Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?"

Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why have you not brought Him?"

The Temple guards who had been sent to arrest him returned to the leading priests and Pharisees. "Why didn't you bring him in?" they demanded.

The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

The police answered, "Have you heard the way he talks? We've never heard anyone speak like this man."

"No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared.

The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this Man!"

"We have never heard anyone talk like this!" the guards responded.

Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

The Pharisees said, "Are you carried away like the rest of the rabble?

"You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted.

Then the Pharisees answered them, "Are you also deceived?

"Have you been led astray, too?" the Pharisees mocked.

Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

You don't see any of the leaders believing in him, do you? Or any from the Pharisees?

But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them,

Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, then spoke up.

Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

"Does our Law decide about a man's guilt without first listening to him and finding out what he is doing?"

"Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?"

"Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing?"

"Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?" he asked.

They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
John.7.52
But they cut him off. "Are you also campaigning for the Galilean?
John.7.52
They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee."
John.7.52
They answered and said to him, "Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee."
John.7.52
They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for yourself--no prophet ever comes from Galilee!"
John.7.53
And every man went unto his own house.
John.7.53
Examine the evidence. See if any prophet ever comes from Galilee." Then they all went home.

Then each went to his own home.
John.7.53
And everyone went to his own house.
John.7.53
Then the meeting broke up and everybody went home.
