And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,

They demanded, "By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?"

And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

But and if we say, Of men; all the people will stone us: for they be persuaded that John was a prophet.

"I'll tell you--he will come and kill them all and lease the vineyard to others.But God forbid that such a thing should ever happen," his listeners protested.

And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

But Jesus didn't back down. "Why, then, do you think this was written: That stone the masons threw out--It's now the cornerstone!?

Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is the meaning of that which is written: "'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone '?

Then He looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone'?

Jesus looked at them and said, "Then what do the Scriptures mean? 'The stone rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone.'

Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

The religion scholars and high priests wanted to lynch him on the spot, but they were intimidated by public opinion. They knew the story was about them.

When the teachers of religious law and the leading priests heard this story, they wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was pointing at them--that they were the farmers in the story. But they were afraid there would be a riot if they arrested him.

And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

So they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you're honest and straightforward when you teach, that you don't pander to anyone but teach the way of God accurately.

So the spies questioned him: "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.

Then they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

They said, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You sincerely teach the ways of God.

Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?

And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

Try as they might, they couldn't trap him into saying anything incriminating. His answer caught them off guard and left them speechless.

Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,
