This message concerning Nineveh came as a vision to Nahum, who lived in Elkosh.

Nah.1.2

God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.

Nah.1.2

GOD is serious business. He won't be trifled with. He avenges his foes. He stands up against his enemies, fierce and raging.

The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies.

God is jealous, and the LORD avenges; The LORD avenges and is furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies;

The LORD is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and wrath. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and furiously destroys his enemies!

The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

But GOD doesn't lose his temper. He's powerful, but it's a patient power. Still, no one gets by with anything. Sooner or later, everyone pays. Tornadoes and hurricanes are the wake of his passage, Storm clouds are the dust he shakes off his feet.

The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.

The LORD is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.

He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.

He yells at the sea: It dries up. All the rivers run dry. The Bashan and Carmel mountains shrivel, the Lebanon orchards shrivel.

He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.

He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, And dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, And the flower of Lebanon wilts.

At his command the oceans and rivers dry up, the lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade, and the green forests of Lebanon wilt.

The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.

Mountains quake in their roots, hills dissolve into mud flats. Earth shakes in fear of GOD. The whole world's in a panic.

The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it.

Nah.1.5

The mountains quake before Him, The hills melt, And the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.

Nah.1.5

In his presence the mountains quake, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles, and its people are destroyed.

Nah.1.6

Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.

Who can face such towering anger? Who can stand up to this fierce rage? His anger spills out like a river of lava, his fury shatters boulders.

Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.

Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And the rocks are thrown down by Him.

Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.

The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

GOD is good, a hiding place in tough times. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help,

The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,

The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.

The LORD is good. When trouble comes, he is a strong refuge. And he knows everyone who trusts in him.

Nah.1.8

But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

Nah.1.8

No matter how desperate the trouble. But cozy islands of escape He wipes right off the map. No one gets away from God.

but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into darkness.

But with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of its place, And darkness will pursue His enemies.

But he sweeps away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He pursues his foes into the darkness of night.

Nah.1.9

What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.

Why waste time conniving against GOD? He's putting an end to all such scheming. For troublemakers, no second chances.

Nah.1.9

Whatever they plot against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.

What do you conspire against the LORD? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.

Nah.1.9

Why are you scheming against the LORD? He will destroy you with one blow; he won't need to strike twice!

Nah.1.10

For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

Nah.1.10

Like a pile of dry brush, Soaked in oil, they'll go up in flames.

Nah.1.10

They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.

Nah.1.10

For while tangled like thorns, And while drunken like drunkards, They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried.

Nah.1.10

His enemies, tangled up like thorns, staggering like drunks, will be burned like dry straw in a field.

Nah.1.11

There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.

Nineveh's an anthill of evil plots against GOD, A think tank for lies that seduce and betray.

Nah.1.11

From you, O Nineveh, has one come forth who plots evil against the LORD and counsels wickedness.

From you comes forth one Who plots evil against the LORD, A wicked counselor.

Nah.1.11

Who is this king of yours who dares to plot evil against the LORD?

Nah.1.12

Thus saith the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.

Nah.1.12

And GOD has something to say about all this: "Even though you're on top of the world, With all the applause and all the votes, you'll be mowed down flat. "I've afflicted you, Judah, true, but I won't afflict you again.

This is what the LORD says: "Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be cut off and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, O Judah, I will afflict you no more.

Nah.1.12

Thus says the LORD: "Though they are safe, and likewise many, Yet in this manner they will be cut down When he passes through. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more;

Nah.1.12

This is what the LORD says: "Even though the Assyrians have many allies, they will be destroyed and disappear. O my people, I have already punished you once, and I will not do it again.

Nah.1.13

For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.

Nah.1.13

From now on I'm taking the yoke from your neck and splitting it up for kindling. I'm cutting you free from the ropes of your bondage." [JC]

Nah.1.13

Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away."

Nah.1.13

For now I will break off his yoke from you, And burst your bonds apart."

Nah.1.13

Now I will break your chains and release you from Assyrian oppression."

Nah.1.14

And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile.

Nah.1.14

GOD's orders on Nineveh: "You're the end of the line. It's all over with Nineveh. I'm gutting your temple. Your gods and goddesses go in the trash. I'm digging your grave. It's an unmarked grave. You're nothing--no, you're less than nothing!"

Nah.1.14

The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: "You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the carved images and cast idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile."

Nah.1.14

The LORD has given a command concerning you: "Your name shall be perpetuated no longer. Out of the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the molded image. I will dig your grave, For you are vile."

Nah.1.14

And this is what the LORD says concerning the Assyrians in Nineveh: "You will have no more children to carry on your name. I will destroy all the idols in the temples of your gods. I am preparing a grave for you because you are despicable and don't deserve to live!"

Nah.1.15

Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

Nah.1.15

Look! Striding across the mountains--a messenger bringing the latest good news: peace! A holiday, Judah! Celebrate! Worship and recommit to God! No more worries about this enemy. This one is history. Close the books.

Nah.1.15

Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, O Judah, and fulfill your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.

Behold, on the mountains The feet of him who brings good tidings, Who proclaims peace! O Judah, keep your appointed feasts, Perform your vows. For the wicked one shall no more pass through you; He is utterly cut off.

Nah.1.15

Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace. Celebrate your festivals, O people of Judah, and fulfill all your vows, for your enemies from Nineveh will never invade your land again. They have been completely destroyed!
