Isa.9.1

Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

Isa.9.1

But there'll be no darkness for those who were in trouble. Earlier he did bring the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali into disrepute, but the time is coming when he'll make that whole area glorious--the road along the Sea, the country past the Jordan, international Galilee.

Isa.9.1

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan-

Isa.9.1

Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, As when at first He lightly esteemed The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles.

Isa.9.1

Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will soon be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.

Isa.9.2

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Isa.9.2

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. For those who lived in a land of deep shadows--light! sunbursts of light!

Isa.9.2

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

Isa.9.2

The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.

Isa.9.2

The people who walk in darkness will see a great light--a light that will shine on all who live in the land where death casts its shadow.

Isa.9.3

Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isa.9.3

You repopulated the nation, you expanded its joy. Oh, they're so glad in your presence! Festival joy! The joy of a great celebration, sharing rich gifts and warm greetings.

Isa.9.3

You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder.

Isa.9.3

You have multiplied the nation And increased its joy; They rejoice before You According to the joy of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Isa.9.3

Israel will again be great, and its people will rejoice as people rejoice at harvesttime. They will shout with joy like warriors dividing the plunder.

Isa.9.4

For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

Isa.9.4

The abuse of oppressors and cruelty of tyrants--all their whips and cudgels and curses--Is gone, done away with, a deliverance as surprising and sudden as Gideon's old victory over Midian.

Isa.9.4

For as in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.

Isa.9.4

For You have broken the yoke of his burden And the staff of his shoulder, The rod of his oppressor, As in the day of Midian.

Isa.9.4

For God will break the chains that bind his people and the whip that scourges them, just as he did when he destroyed the army of Midian with Gideon's little band.

Isa.9.5

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

Isa.9.5

The boots of all those invading troops, along with their shirts soaked with innocent blood, Will be piled in a heap and burned, a fire that will burn for days!

Isa.9.5

Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.

Isa.9.5

For every warrior's sandal from the noisy battle, And garments rolled in blood, Will be used for burning and fuel of fire.

Isa.9.5

In that day of peace, battle gear will no longer be issued. Never again will uniforms be bloodstained by war. All such equipment will be burned.

Isa.9.6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isa.9.6

For a child has been born--for us! the gift of a son--for us! He'll take over the running of the world. His names will be: Amazing Counselor, Strong God, Eternal Father, Prince of Wholeness.

Isa.9.6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isa.9.6

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isa.9.6

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isa.9.7

Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

Isa.9.7

His ruling authority will grow, and there'll be no limits to the wholeness he brings. He'll rule from the historic David throne over that promised kingdom. He'll put that kingdom on a firm footing and keep it going With fair dealing and right living, beginning now and lasting always. The zeal of GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies will do all this.

Isa.9.7

Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

Isa.9.7

Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Isa.9.7

His ever expanding, peaceful government will never end. He will rule forever with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David. The passionate commitment of the LORD Almighty will guarantee this!

Isa.9.8

The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

Isa.9.8

The Master sent a message against Jacob. It landed right on Israel's doorstep.

Isa.9.8

The Lord has sent a message against Jacob; it will fall on Israel.

Isa.9.8

The LORD sent a word against Jacob, And it has fallen on Israel.

Isa.9.8

The Lord has spoken out against that braggart Israel,

Isa.9.9

And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,

Isa.9.9

All the people soon heard the message, Ephraim and the citizens of Samaria. But they were a proud and arrogant bunch. They dismissed the message, saying,

All the people will know it- Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria- who say with pride and arrogance of heart,

Isa.9.9

All the people will know-- Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria-- Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:

Isa.9.9

and the people of Israel and Samaria will soon discover it. In their pride and arrogance they say,

Isa.9.10

The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.

Isa.9.10

"Things aren't that bad. We can handle anything that comes. If our buildings are knocked down, we'll rebuild them bigger and finer. If our forests are cut down, we'll replant them with finer trees."

Isa.9.10

"The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars."

Isa.9.10

"The bricks have fallen down, But we will rebuild with hewn stones; The sycamores are cut down, But we will replace them with cedars."

Isa.9.10

"Our land lies in ruins now, but we will rebuild it better than before. We will replace the broken bricks with cut stone, the fallen sycamore trees with cedars."

Isa.9.11

Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;

Isa.9.11

So GOD incited their adversaries against them, stirred up their enemies to attack:

Isa.9.11

But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.

Isa.9.11

Therefore the LORD shall set up The adversaries of Rezin against him, And spur his enemies on,

Isa.9.11

The LORD will reply to their bragging by bringing Rezin's enemies, the Assyrians, against them--

Isa.9.12

The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Isa.9.12

From the east, Arameans; from the west, Philistines. They made hash of Israel. But even after that, he was still angry, his fist still raised, ready to hit them again.

Isa.9.12

Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west have devoured Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.

Isa.9.12

The Syrians before and the Philistines behind; And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth. For all this His anger is not turned away, But His hand is stretched out still.

Isa.9.12

along with Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west. With bared fangs, they will devour Israel. But even then the LORD's anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.

Isa.9.13

For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts.

Isa.9.13

But the people paid no mind to him who hit them, didn't seek GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies.

Isa.9.13

But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the LORD Almighty.

Isa.9.13

For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them, Nor do they seek the LORD of hosts.

Isa.9.13

For after all this punishment, the people will still not repent and turn to the LORD Almighty.

Isa.9.14

Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

Isa.9.14

So GOD hacked off Israel's head and tail, palm branch and reed, both on the same day.

Isa.9.14

So the LORD will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed in a single day;

Isa.9.14

Therefore the LORD will cut off head and tail from Israel, Palm branch and bulrush in one day.

Isa.9.14

Therefore, in a single day, the LORD will destroy both the head and the tail, the palm branch and the reed.

Isa.9.15

The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

Isa.9.15

The big-head elders were the head, the lying prophets were the tail.

Isa.9.15

the elders and prominent men are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.

Isa.9.15

The elder and honorable, he is the head; The prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.

Isa.9.15

The leaders of Israel are the head, and the lying prophets are the tail.

Isa.9.16

For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

Isa.9.16

Those who were supposed to lead this people led them down blind alleys, And those who followed the leaders ended up lost and confused.

Isa.9.16

Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.

Isa.9.16

For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed.

Isa.9.16

For the leaders of the people have led them down the path of destruction.

Isa.9.17

Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Isa.9.17

That's why the Master lost interest in the young men, had no feeling for their orphans and widows. All of them were godless and evil, talking filth and folly. And even after that, he was still angry, his fist still raised, ready to hit them again.

Isa.9.17

Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men, nor will he pity the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly and wicked, every mouth speaks vileness. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.

Isa.9.17

Therefore the Lord will have no joy in their young men, Nor have mercy on their fatherless and widows; For everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer, And every mouth speaks folly. For all this His anger is not turned away, But His hand is stretched out still.

Isa.9.17

That is why the Lord has no joy in the young men and no mercy on even the widows and orphans. For they are all hypocrites, speaking wickedness with lies. But even then the LORD's anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.

Isa.9.18

For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

Isa.9.18

Their wicked lives raged like an out--of-control fire, the kind that burns everything in its path--Trees and bushes, weeds and grasses--filling the skies with smoke.

Isa.9.18

Surely wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns, it sets the forest thickets ablaze, so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.

Isa.9.18

For wickedness burns as the fire; It shall devour the briers and thorns, And kindle in the thickets of the forest; They shall mount up like rising smoke.

Isa.9.18

This wickedness is like a brushfire. It burns not only briers and thorns but the forests, too. Its burning sends up vast clouds of smoke.

Isa.9.19

Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

Isa.9.19

GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies answered fire with fire, set the whole country on fire, Turned the people into consuming fires, consuming one another in their lusts--

Isa.9.19

By the wrath of the LORD Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; no one will spare his brother.

Isa.9.19

Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts The land is burned up, And the people shall be as fuel for the fire; No man shall spare his brother.

Isa.9.19

The land is blackened by the fury of the LORD Almighty. The people are fuel for the fire, and no one spares anyone else.

Isa.9.20

And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

Isa.9.20

Appetites insatiable, stuffing and gorging themselves left and right with people and things. But still they starved. Not even their children were safe from their rapacious hunger.

Isa.9.20

On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of his own offspring:

Isa.9.20

And he shall snatch on the right hand And be hungry; He shall devour on the left hand And not be satisfied; Every man shall eat the flesh of his own arm.

Isa.9.20

They fight against their own neighbors to steal food, but they will still be hungry. In the end they will even eat their own children.

Isa.9.21

Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

Isa.9.21

Manasseh ate Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh, and then the two ganged up against Judah. And after that, he was still angry, his fist still raised, ready to hit them again. [JC]

Isa.9.21

Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh; together they will turn against Judah. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.

Isa.9.21

Manasseh shall devour Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; Together they shall be against Judah. For all this His anger is not turned away, But His hand is stretched out still.

Isa.9.21

Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, Ephraim will feed on Manasseh, and both will devour Judah. But even then the LORD's anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.
