Isa.8.1

Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen concerning Mahershalalhashbaz.

Isa.8.1

Then GOD told me, "Get a big sheet of paper and write in indelible ink, "This belongs to Maher-shalal-hash-baz (Spoil-Speeds-Plunder-Hurries).'"

Isa.8.1

The LORD said to me, "Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.

Isa.8.1

Moreover the LORD said to me, "Take a large scroll, and write on it with a man's pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.

Isa.8.1

Again the LORD said to me, "Make a large signboard and clearly write this name on it: Maher-shalal-hash-baz. "

Isa.8.2

And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

Isa.8.2

I got two honest men, Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah, to witness the document.

Isa.8.2

And I will call in Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses for me."

Isa.8.2

And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah."

Isa.8.2

I asked Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah, both known as honest men, to testify that I had written it before the child was conceived.

Isa.8.3

And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.

Isa.8.3

Then I went home to my wife, the prophetess. She conceived and gave birth to a son. GOD told me, "Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. And the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.

Isa.8.3

Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the LORD said to me, "Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz;

Isa.8.3

Then I slept with my wife, and she became pregnant and had a son. And the LORD said, "Call him Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

Isa.8.4

For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

Isa.8.4

Before that baby says "Daddy' or "Mamma' the king of Assyria will have plundered the wealth of Damascus and the riches of Samaria." [JC]

Isa.8.4

Before the boy knows how to say 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria."

Isa.8.4

for before the child shall have knowledge to cry "My father' and "My mother,' the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria."

Isa.8.4

This name prophesies that within a couple of years, before this child is old enough to say `Papa' or `Mama,' the king of Assyria will invade both Damascus and Samaria and carry away their riches."

Isa.8.5

The LORD spake also unto me again, saying,

Then the LORD spoke to me again and said,

Isa.8.6

Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;

Isa.8.6

"Because this people has turned its back on the gently flowing stream of Shiloah And gotten all excited over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,

Isa.8.6

"Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah,

Isa.8.6

"Inasmuch as these people refused The waters of Shiloah that flow softly, And rejoice in Rezin and in Remaliah's son;

Isa.8.6

"The people of Judah have rejected my gentle care and are rejoicing over what will happen to King Rezin and King Pekah.

Isa.8.7

Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:

Isa.8.7

I'm stepping in and facing them with the wild floodwaters of the Euphrates, The king of Assyria and all his fanfare, a river in flood, bursting its banks,

Isa.8.7

therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the River - the king of Assyria with all his pomp. It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks

Isa.8.7

Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them The waters of the River, strong and mighty-- The king of Assyria and all his glory; He will go up over all his channels And go over all his banks.

Isa.8.7

Therefore, the Lord will overwhelm them with a mighty flood from the Euphrates River--the king of Assyria and all his mighty armies.

Isa.8.8

And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

Isa.8.8

Pouring into Judah, sweeping everything before it, water up to your necks, A huge wingspan of a raging river, O Immanuel, spreading across your land." [JC]

Isa.8.8

and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it, passing through it and reaching up to the neck. Its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, O Immanuel!"

Isa.8.8

He will pass through Judah, He will overflow and pass over, He will reach up to the neck; And the stretching out of his wings Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel.

Isa.8.8

This flood will overflow all its channels and sweep into Judah. It will submerge Immanuel's land from one end to the other.

Isa.8.9

Associate yourselves, O ye people, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.

Isa.8.9

But face the facts, all you oppressors, and then wring your hands. Listen, all of you, far and near. Prepare for the worst and wring your hands. Yes, prepare for the worst and wring your hands!

Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, and be shattered! Prepare for battle, and be shattered!

"Be shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Give ear, all you from far countries. Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces; Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.

Isa.8.9

"The Assyrians will cry, `Do your best to defend yourselves, but you will be shattered! Listen all you nations. Prepare for battle--and die! Yes, die!

Isa.8.10

Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

Isa.8.10

Plan and plot all you want--nothing will come of it. All your talk is mere talk, empty words, Because when all is said and done, the last word is Immanuel--God-With-Us.

Isa.8.10

Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us.

Isa.8.10

Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; Speak the word, but it will not stand, For God is with us."

Isa.8.10

Call your councils of war, develop your strategies, prepare your plans of attack--and then die! For God is with us! '"

Isa.8.11

For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

GOD spoke strongly to me, grabbed me with both hands and warned me not to go along with this people. He said:

The LORD spoke to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people. He said:

For the LORD spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:

Isa.8.11

The LORD has said to me in the strongest terms: "Do not think like everyone else does.

Isa.8.12

Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

Isa.8.12

"Don't be like this people, always afraid somebody is plotting against them. Don't fear what they fear. Don't take on their worries.

Isa.8.12

"Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it.

Isa.8.12

"Do not say, "A conspiracy,' Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.

Isa.8.12

Do not be afraid that some plan conceived behind closed doors will be the end of you.

Isa.8.13

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

Isa.8.13

If you're going to worry, worry about The Holy. Fear GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies.

Isa.8.13

The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread,

Isa.8.13

The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear, And let Him be your dread.

Isa.8.13

Do not fear anything except the LORD Almighty. He alone is the Holy One. If you fear him, you need fear nothing else.

Isa.8.14

And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Isa.8.14

The Holy can be either a Hiding Place or a Boulder blocking your way, The Rock standing in the willful way of both houses of Israel, A barbed-wire Fence preventing trespass to the citizens of Jerusalem.

and he will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare.

Isa.8.14

He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Isa.8.14

He will keep you safe. But to Israel and Judah he will be a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap that entangles them.

Isa.8.15

And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Isa.8.15

Many of them are going to run into that Rock and get their bones broken, Get tangled up in that barbed wire and not get free of it." [JC]

Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured."

Isa.8.15

And many among them shall stumble; They shall fall and be broken, Be snared and taken."

Isa.8.15

Many of them will stumble and fall, never to rise again. Many will be captured."

Isa.8.16

Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

Gather up the testimony, preserve the teaching for my followers,

I will write down all these things as a testimony of what the LORD will do. I will entrust it to my disciples, who will pass it down to future generations.

Isa.8.17

And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.

Isa.8.17

While I wait for GOD as long as he remains in hiding, while I wait and hope for him.

I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in him.

Isa.8.17

And I will wait on the LORD, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob; And I will hope in Him.

Isa.8.17

I will wait for the LORD to help us, though he has turned away from the people of Israel. My only hope is in him.

Isa.8.18

Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

Isa.8.18

I stand my ground and hope, I and the children GOD gave me as signs to Israel, Warning signs and hope signs from GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, who makes his home in Mount Zion.

Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.

Isa.8.18

Here am I and the children whom the LORD has given me! We are for signs and wonders in Israel From the LORD of hosts, Who dwells in Mount Zion.

Isa.8.18

I and the children the LORD has given me have names that reveal the plans the LORD Almighty has for his people.

Isa.8.19

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?

Isa.8.19

When people tell you, "Try out the fortunetellers. Consult the spiritualists. Why not tap into the spirit--world, get in touch with the dead?"

Isa.8.19

When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Isa.8.19

And when they say to you, "Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter," should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living?

Isa.8.19

So why are you trying to find out the future by consulting mediums and psychics? Do not listen to their whisperings and mutterings. Can the living find out the future from the dead? Why not ask your God?

Isa.8.20

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Isa.8.20

Tell them, "No, we're going to study the Scriptures." People who try the other ways get nowhere--a dead end!

To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

"Check their predictions against my testimony," says the LORD. "If their predictions are different from mine, it is because there is no light or truth in them.

Isa.8.21

And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

Isa.8.21

Frustrated and famished, they try one thing after another. When nothing works out they get angry, cursing first this god and then that one, Looking this way and that,

Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God.

Isa.8.21

They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

Isa.8.21

My people will be led away as captives, weary and hungry. And because they are hungry, they will rage and shake their fists at heaven and curse their king and their God.

Isa.8.22

And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

up, down, and sideways--and seeing nothing, A blank wall, an empty hole. They end up in the dark with nothing.

Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

Wherever they look, there will be trouble and anguish and dark despair. They will be thrown out into the darkness."
