Isa.48.1
Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.
Isa.48.1
"And now listen to this, family of Jacob, you who are called by the name Israel: Who got you started in the loins of Judah, you who use GOD's name to back up your promises and pray to the God of Israel? But do you mean it? Do you live like it?
Isa.48.1
"Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel- but not in truth or righteousness-
Isa.48.1
"Hear this, O house of Jacob, Who are called by the name of Israel, And have come forth from the wellsprings of Judah; Who swear by the name of the LORD, And make mention of the God of Israel, But not in truth or in righteousness;
Isa.48.1
"Listen to me, O family of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and born into the family of Judah. Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and call on the God of Israel. You don't follow through on any of your promises,
Isa.48.2
For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name.
Isa.48.2
You claim to be citizens of the Holy City; you act as though you lean on the God of Israel, named GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies.
Isa.48.2
you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel- the LORD Almighty is his name:
Isa.48.2
For they call themselves after the holy city, And lean on the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is His name:
Isa.48.2
even though you call yourself the holy city and talk about depending on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD Almighty.
Isa.48.3
I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.
Isa.48.3
For a long time now, I've let you in on the way I work: I told you what I was going to do beforehand, then I did it and it was done, and that's that.
Isa.48.3
I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
Isa.48.3
"I have declared the former things from the beginning; They went forth from My mouth, and I caused them to hear it. Suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.
Isa.48.3
Time and again I warned you about what was going to happen in the future. Then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true.
Isa.48.4
Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;
Isa.48.4
I know you're a bunch of hardheads, obstinate and flint-faced,
Isa.48.4
For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze.
Isa.48.4
Because I knew that you were obstinate, And your neck was an iron sinew, And your brow bronze,
Isa.48.4
"I know how stubborn and obstinate you are. Your necks are as unbending as iron. You are as hardheaded as bronze.
Isa.48.5
I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.
Isa.48.5
So I got a running start and began telling you what was going on before it even happened. That is why you can't say, "My god-idol did this.'"My favorite god-carving commanded this.'
Isa.48.5
Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.'
Isa.48.5
Even from the beginning I have declared it to you; Before it came to pass I proclaimed it to you, Lest you should say, "My idol has done them, And my carved image and my molded image Have commanded them.'
Isa.48.5
That is why I told you ahead of time what I was going to do. That way, you could never say, `My idols did it. My wooden image and metal god commanded it to happen!'
Isa.48.6
Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.
Isa.48.6
You have all this evidence confirmed by your own eyes and ears. Shouldn't you be talking about it? And that was just the beginning. I have a lot more to tell you, things you never knew existed.
Isa.48.6
You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? "From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you.
Isa.48.6
"You have heard; See all this. And will you not declare it? I have made you hear new things from this time, Even hidden things, and you did not know them.
Isa.48.6
You have heard my predictions and seen them fulfilled, but you refuse to admit it. Now I will tell you new things I have not mentioned before, secrets you have not yet heard.
Isa.48.7
They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.
Isa.48.7
This isn't a variation on the same old thing. This is new, brand-new, something you'd never guess or dream up. When you hear this you won't be able to say, "I knew that all along.'
Isa.48.7
They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.'
Isa.48.7
They are created now and not from the beginning; And before this day you have not heard them, Lest you should say, "Of course I knew them.'
Isa.48.7
They are brand new, not things from the past. So you cannot say, `We knew that all the time!'
Isa.48.8
Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.
Isa.48.8
You've never been good listeners to me. You have a history of ignoring me, A sorry track record of fickle attachments--rebels from the womb.
Isa.48.8
You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth.
Isa.48.8
Surely you did not hear, Surely you did not know; Surely from long ago your ear was not opened. For I knew that you would deal very treacherously, And were called a transgressor from the womb.
Isa.48.8
"Yes, I will tell you of things that are entirely new, for I know so well what traitors you are. You have been rebels from your earliest childhood, rotten through and through.
Isa.48.9
For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.
Isa.48.9
But out of the sheer goodness of my heart, because of who I am, I keep a tight rein on my anger and hold my temper. I don't wash my hands of you.
Isa.48.9
For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off.
Isa.48.9
"For My name's sake I will defer My anger, And for My praise I will restrain it from you, So that I do not cut you off.
Isa.48.9
Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name, I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out.
Isa.48.10
Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.
Isa.48.10
Do you see what I've done? I've refined you, but not without fire. I've tested you like silver in the furnace of affliction.
Isa.48.10
See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
Isa.48.10
Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.
Isa.48.10
I have refined you but not in the way silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.
Isa.48.11
For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.
Isa.48.11
Out of myself, simply because of who I am, I do what I do. I have my reputation to keep up. I'm not playing second fiddle to either gods or people.
Isa.48.11
For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another.
Isa.48.11
For My own sake, for My own sake, I will do it; For how should My name be profaned? And I will not give My glory to another.
Isa.48.11
I will rescue you for my sake--yes, for my own sake! That way, the pagan nations will not be able to claim that their gods have conquered me. I will not let them have my glory!
Isa.48.12
Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
Isa.48.12
"Listen, Jacob. Listen, Israel--I'm the One who named you! I'm the One. I got things started and, yes, I'll wrap them up.

Isa.48.13
Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth, And My right hand has stretched out the heavens; When I call to them, They stand up together.
Isa.48.13
It was my hand that laid the foundations of the earth. The palm of my right hand spread out the heavens above. I spoke, and they came into being.
Isa.48.14
All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.
Isa.48.14
"Come everybody, gather around, listen: Who among the gods has delivered the news? I, GOD, love this man Cyrus, and I'm using him to do what I want with Babylon.
