Exod.5.2

And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

"Is that so?" retorted Pharaoh. "And who is the LORD that I should listen to him and let Israel go? I don't know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go."

Exod.5.3

And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.

So they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days' journey into the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword."

Exod.5.3

But Aaron and Moses persisted. "The God of the Hebrews has met with us," they declared. "Let us take a three-day trip into the wilderness so we can offer sacrifices to the LORD our God. If we don't, we will surely die by disease or the sword."

Exod.5.4

And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.

Exod.5.4

Then the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labor."

Exod.5.4

But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!"

Exod.5.4

Then the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? Get back to your labor."

Exod.5.4

"Who do you think you are," Pharaoh shouted, "distracting the people from their tasks? Get back to work!

Exod.5.5

And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.

Exod.5.5

And Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are many now, and you make them rest from their labor!"

Exod.5.5

Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working."

Exod.5.5

Exod.5.6

So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,

Exod.5.6

That same day Pharaoh sent this order to the slave drivers and foremen he had set over the people of Israel:

Exod.5.7

Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.

Exod.5.7

"You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

Exod.5.7

"You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.

Exod.5.7

"You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

Exod.5.7

"Do not supply the people with any more straw for making bricks. Let them get it themselves!

Exod.5.8

And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

Exod.5.8

And you shall lay on them the quota of bricks which they made before. You shall not reduce it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, "Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

Exod.5.8

But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

Exod.5.8

And you shall lay on them the quota of bricks which they made before. You shall not reduce it. For they are idle; therefore they cry out, saying, "Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

Exod.5.8

But don't reduce their production quotas by a single brick. They obviously don't have enough to do. If they did, they wouldn't be talking about going into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to their God.

Exod.5.9

Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

Exod.5.9

Let more work be laid on the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard false words."

Exod.5.9

Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies."

Exod.5.9

Let more work be laid on the men, that they may labor in it, and let them not regard false words."

Exod.5.9

Load them down with more work. Make them sweat! That will teach them to listen to these liars!"

Exod.5.10

And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.

Exod.5.10

And the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh: "I will not give you straw.

Exod.5.10

Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw.

Exod.5.10

And the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, "Thus says Pharaoh: "I will not give you straw.

Exod.5.10

So the slave drivers and foremen informed the people: "Pharaoh has ordered us not to provide straw for you.

Exod.5.11

Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.

Exod.5.11

Go, get yourselves straw where you can find it; yet none of your work will be reduced."'

Exod.5.11

Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.'"

Exod.5.11

Go, get yourselves straw where you can find it; yet none of your work will be reduced."'

Exod.5.11

Go and get it yourselves. Find it wherever you can. But you must produce just as many bricks as before!"

Exod.5.12

So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

Exod.5.12

So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.

Exod.5.12

So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

Exod.5.12

So the people scattered throughout the land in search of straw.

Exod.5.13

And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.

Exod.5.13

And the taskmasters forced them to hurry, saying, "Fulfill your work, your daily quota, as when there was straw."

Exod.5.13

The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw."

Exod.5.13

And the taskmasters forced them to hurry, saying, "Fulfill your work, your daily quota, as when there was straw."

Exod.5.13

The slave drivers were brutal. "Meet your daily quota of bricks, just as you did before!" they demanded.

Exod.5.14

And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

Exod.5.14

Also the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, "Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as before?"

Exod.5.14

The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?"

Exod.5.14

Also the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, "Why have you not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and today, as before?"

Exod.5.14

Then they whipped the Israelite foremen in charge of the work crews. "Why haven't you met your quotas either yesterday or today?" they demanded.

Exod.5.15

Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?

Exod.5.15

Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why are you dealing thus with your servants?

Exod.5.15

Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way?

Exod.5.15

Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why are you dealing thus with your servants?

Exod.5.15

So the Israelite foremen went to Pharaoh and pleaded with him. "Please don't treat us like this," they begged.

Exod.5.16

There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.

Exod.5.16

There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, "Make brick!' And indeed your servants are beaten, but the fault is in your own people."

Exod.5.16

Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people."

Exod.5.16

There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, "Make brick!' And indeed your servants are beaten, but the fault is in your own people."

Exod.5.16

"We are given no straw, but we are still told to make as many bricks as before. We are beaten for something that isn't our fault! It is the fault of your slave drivers for making such unreasonable demands."

Exod.5.17

But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD.

Exod.5.17

But he said, "You are idle! Idle! Therefore you say, "Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'

Exod.5.17

Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are-lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'

Exod.5.17

But he said, "You are idle! Idle! Therefore you say, "Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'

Exod.5.17

But Pharaoh replied, "You're just lazy! You obviously don't have enough to do. If you did, you wouldn't be saying, `Let us go, so we can offer sacrifices to the LORD.'

Exod.5.18

Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.

Exod.5.18

Therefore go now and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the quota of bricks."

Exod.5.18

Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks."

Exod.5.18

Therefore go now and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the quota of bricks."

Exod.5.18

Now, get back to work! No straw will be given to you, but you must still deliver the regular quota of bricks."

Exod.5.19

And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.

Exod.5.19

And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble after it was said, "You shall not reduce any bricks from your daily quota."

Exod.5.19

The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day."

Exod.5.19

And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble after it was said, "You shall not reduce any bricks from your daily quota."

Exod.5.19

Since Pharaoh would not let up on his demands, the Israelite foremen could see that they were in serious trouble.

Exod.5.20

And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:

Exod.5.20

Then, as they came out from Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron who stood there to meet them.

Exod.5.20

When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,

Exod.5.20

Then, as they came out from Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron who stood there to meet them.

Exod.5.20

As they left Pharaoh's court, they met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting outside for them.

Exod.5.21

And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

Exod.5.21

And they said to them, "Let the LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us."

Exod.5.21

and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us."

Exod.5.21

And they said to them, "Let the LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us."

Exod.5.21

The foremen said to them, "May the LORD judge you for getting us into this terrible situation with Pharaoh and his officials. You have given them an excuse to kill us!"

Exod.5.22

And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

Exod.5.22

So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me?

Exod.5.22

Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me?

Exod.5.22

So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Why is it You have sent me?

Exod.5.22

So Moses went back to the LORD and protested, "Why have you mistreated your own people like this, Lord? Why did you send me?

Exod.5.23

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

Exod.5.23

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all."

Exod.5.23

Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."

Exod.5.23

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all."

Exod.5.23

Since I gave Pharaoh your message, he has been even more brutal to your people. You have not even begun to rescue them!"
