Ps.44.1

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

Ps.44.1

We've been hearing about this, God, all our lives. Our fathers told us the stories their fathers told them,

Ps.44.1

We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.

Ps.44.1

We have heard with our ears, O God, Our fathers have told us, The deeds You did in their days, In days of old:

Ps.44.1

O God, we have heard it with our own ears--our ancestors have told us of all you did in other days, in days long ago:

Ps.44.2

How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

Ps.44.2

How single-handedly you weeded out the godless from the fields and planted us, How you sent those people packing but gave us a fresh start.

Ps.44.2

With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.

Ps.44.2

You drove out the nations with Your hand, But them You planted; You afflicted the peoples, and cast them out.

Ps.44.2

You drove out the pagan nations and gave all the land to our ancestors; you crushed their enemies, setting our ancestors free.

Ps.44.3

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Ps.44.3

We didn't fight for this land; we didn't work for it--it was a gift! You gave it, smiling as you gave it, delighting as you gave it.

Ps.44.3

It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

Ps.44.3

For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, Because You favored them.

Ps.44.3

They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strength that gave them victory. It was by your mighty power that they succeeded; it was because you favored them and smiled on them.

Ps.44.4

Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

Ps.44.4

You're my King, O God--command victories for Jacob!

Ps.44.4

You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.

Ps.44.4

You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob.

Ps.44.4

You are my King and my God. You command victories for your people.

Ps.44.5

Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

Ps.44.5

With your help we'll wipe out our enemies, in your name we'll stomp them to dust.

Ps.44.5

Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.

Ps.44.5

Through You we will push down our enemies; Through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us.

Ps.44.5

Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes.

Ps.44.6

For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

Ps.44.6

I don't trust in weapons; my sword won't save me--

Ps.44.6

I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;

Ps.44.6

For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me.

Ps.44.6

I do not trust my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me.

Ps.44.7

But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

Ps.44.7

But it's you, you who saved us from the enemy; you made those who hate us lose face.

Ps.44.7

but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

Ps.44.7

But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us.

Ps.44.7

It is you who gives us victory over our enemies; it is you who humbles those who hate us.

Ps.44.8

In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

Ps.44.8

All day we parade God's praise--we thank you by name over and over.

In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name.

Ps.44.9

But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

Ps.44.9

But now you've walked off and left us, you've disgraced us and won't fight for us.

Ps.44.9

But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.

Ps.44.9

But You have cast us off and put us to shame, And You do not go out with our armies.

Ps.44.9

But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle.

Ps.44.10

Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

Ps.44.10

You made us turn tail and run; those who hate us have cleaned us out.

Ps.44.10

You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us.

Ps.44.10

You make us turn back from the enemy, And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves.

You make us retreat from our enemies and allow them to plunder our land.

Ps.44.11

Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

Ps.44.11

You delivered us as sheep to the butcher, you scattered us to the four winds.

Ps.44.11

You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations.

Ps.44.11

You have given us up like sheep intended for food, And have scattered us among the nations.

Ps.44.11

You have treated us like sheep waiting to be slaughtered; you have scattered us among the nations.

Ps.44.12

Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

Ps.44.12

You sold your people at a discount--you made nothing on the sale.

Ps.44.12

You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale.

Ps.44.12

You sell Your people for next to nothing, And are not enriched by selling them.

Ps.44.12

You sold us--your precious people--for a pittance. You valued us at nothing at all.

Ps.44.13

Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

Ps.44.13

You made people on the street, urchins, poke fun and call us names.

Ps.44.13

You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us.

You have caused all our neighbors to mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to the nations around us.

Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

You made us a joke among the godless, a cheap joke among the rabble.

Ps.44.14

You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us.

Ps.44.14

You make us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.

You have made us the butt of their jokes; we are scorned by the whole world.

Ps.44.15

My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

Every day I'm up against it, my nose rubbed in my shame--

Ps.44.15

My disgrace is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame

Ps.44.15

My dishonor is continually before me, And the shame of my face has covered me,

Ps.44.15

We can't escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces.

Ps.44.16

For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

Ps.44.16

Gossip and ridicule fill the air, people out to get me crowd the street.

Ps.44.16

at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.

Ps.44.16

Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the enemy and the avenger.

Ps.44.16

All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies.

Ps.44.17

All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

Ps.44.17

All this came down on us, and we've done nothing to deserve it. We never betrayed your Covenant:

All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.

Ps.44.17

All this has come upon us; But we have not forgotten You, Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant.

All this has happened despite our loyalty to you. We have not violated your covenant.

Ps.44.18

Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

Ps.44.18

our hearts were never false, our feet never left your path.

Ps.44.18

Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.

Ps.44.18

Our heart has not turned back, Nor have our steps departed from Your way;

Ps.44.18

Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path.

Ps.44.19

Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

Ps.44.19

Do we deserve torture in a den of jackals? or lockup in a black hole?

Ps.44.19

But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness.

Ps.44.19

But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals, And covered us with the shadow of death.

Ps.44.19

Yet you have crushed us in the desert. You have covered us with darkness and death.

Ps.44.20

If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

Ps.44.20

If we had forgotten to pray to our God or made fools of ourselves with store-bought gods,

Ps.44.20

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

Ps.44.20

If we had forgotten the name of our God, Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god,

Ps.44.20

If we had turned away from worshiping our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods,

Ps.44.21

Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

Wouldn't God have figured this out? We can't hide things from him.

God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart.

Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

No, you decided to make us martyrs, lambs assigned for sacrifice each day.

Ps.44.22

Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.

Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

Get up, GOD! Are you going to sleep all day? Wake up! Don't you care what happens to us?

Ps.44.23

Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.

Ps.44.23

Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever.

Ps.44.23

Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever.

Ps.44.24

Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

Ps.44.24

Why do you bury your face in the pillow? Why pretend things are just fine with us?

Ps.44.24

Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression?

Ps.44.24

Why do You hide Your face, And forget our affliction and our oppression?

Ps.44.24

Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression?

Ps.44.25

For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

And here we are--flat on our faces in the dirt, held down with a boot on our necks.

We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground.

We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt.

Ps.44.26

Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

Get up and come to our rescue. If you love us so much, Help us! A wedding song of the sons of Korah
