Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf.

"Stay with me a little longer. I'll convince you. There's still more to be said on God's side.

"Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God's behalf.

"Bear with me a little, and I will show you That there are yet words to speak on God's behalf.

"Let me go on, and I will show you the truth of what I am saying. For I have not finished defending God!

I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.

I learned all this firsthand from the Source; everything I know about justice I owe to my Maker himself.

I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my Maker.

I will give you many illustrations of the righteousness of my Creator.

For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.

Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.

He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.

For the wicked, though, it's a different story--he doesn't give them the time of day, but champions the rights of their victims.

He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.

He never takes his eyes off the righteous; he honors them lavishly, promotes them endlessly.

And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction;

When things go badly, when affliction and suffering descend,

But if men are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction,

And if they are bound in fetters, Held in the cords of affliction,

If troubles come upon them and they are enslaved and afflicted,

Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.

God tells them where they've gone wrong, shows them how their pride has caused their trouble.

he tells them what they have done- that they have sinned arrogantly.

Then He tells them their work and their transgressions-- That they have acted defiantly.

he takes the trouble to show them the reason. He shows them their sins, for they have behaved proudly.

He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.

He forces them to heed his warning, tells them they must repent of their bad life.

He makes them listen to correction and commands them to repent of their evil.

He also opens their ear to instruction, And commands that they turn from iniquity.

He gets their attention and says they must turn away from evil.

If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.

Angry people without God pile grievance upon grievance, always blaming others for their troubles.

"The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help.

"But the hypocrites in heart store up wrath; They do not cry for help when He binds them.

For the godless are full of resentment. Even when he punishes them, they refuse to cry out to him for help.

They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.

Living it up in sexual excesses, virility wasted, they die young.

They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines.

They die in youth, And their life ends among the perverted persons.

They die young after wasting their lives in immoral living.

He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.

But those who learn from their suffering, God delivers from their suffering.

Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.

"Oh, Job, don't you see how God's wooing you from the jaws of danger? How he's drawing you into wide-open places--inviting you to feast at a table laden with blessings?

"He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.

"Indeed He would have brought you out of dire distress, Into a broad place where there is no restraint; And what is set on your table would be full of richness.

"God has led you away from danger, giving you freedom. You have prospered in a wide and pleasant valley.

But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee.

And here you are laden with the guilt of the wicked, obsessed with putting the blame on God!

But you are too obsessed with judgment on the godless. Don't worry, justice will be upheld.

Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee.

Don't let your great riches mislead you; don't think you can bribe your way out of this.

Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.

But watch out, or you may be seduced with wealth. Don't let yourself be bribed into sin.

Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.

Did you plan to buy your way out of this? Not on your life!

Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress?

Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.

And don't think that night, when people sleep off their troubles, will bring you any relief.

Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes.

Do not long for the cover of night, for that is when people will be destroyed.

Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.

Above all, don't make things worse with more evil--that's what's behind your suffering as it is!

Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?

Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?

Has anyone ever had to tell him what to do, or correct him, saying, "You did that all wrong!'?

Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, 'You have done wrong'?

Who has assigned Him His way, Or who has said, "You have done wrong'?

No one can tell him what to do. No one can say to him, `You have done wrong.'

Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold.

Remember, then, to praise his workmanship, which is so often celebrated in song.

Instead, glorify his mighty works, singing songs of praise.

Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off.

All mankind has seen it; men gaze on it from afar.

Everyone has seen these things, but only from a distance.

Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.

"Take a long, hard look. See how great he is--infinite, greater than anything you could ever imagine or figure out!

How great is God-beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.

For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:

"He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams;

For He draws up drops of water, Which distill as rain from the mist,

He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain.

Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.

Then the skies open up and pour out soaking showers on everyone.

the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.

Which the clouds drop down And pour abundantly on man.

The rain pours down from the clouds, and everyone benefits from it.

Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?

Does anyone have the slightest idea how this happens? How he arranges the clouds, how he speaks in thunder?

Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion?

Indeed, can anyone understand the spreading of clouds, The thunder from His canopy?

Can anyone really understand the spreading of the clouds and the thunder that rolls forth from heaven?

Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.

Just look at that lightning, his sky-filling light show illumining the dark depths of the sea!

See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea.

For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance.

These are the symbols of his sovereignty, his generosity, his loving care.

With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt.

The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.

The High God roars in the thunder, angry against evil.
