My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.

Job prayed: "Here's what I want to say: Don't, God, bring in a verdict of guilty without letting me know the charges you're bringing.

I will say to God: Do not condemn me, but tell me what charges you have against me.

I will say to God, "Do not condemn me; Show me why You contend with me.

I will say to God, `Don't simply condemn me--tell me the charge you are bringing against me.

Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

How does this fit into what you once called "good'--giving me a hard time, spurning me, a life you shaped by your very own hands, and then blessing the plots of the wicked?

Does it please you to oppress me, to spurn the work of your hands, while you smile on the schemes of the wicked?

Does it seem good to You that You should oppress, That You should despise the work of Your hands, And smile on the counsel of the wicked?

What do you gain by oppressing me? Why do you reject me, the work of your own hands, while sending joy and prosperity to the wicked?

Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?

You don't look at things the way we mortals do. You're not taken in by appearances, are you?

Do you have eyes of flesh? Do you see as a mortal sees?

Do You have eyes of flesh? Or do You see as man sees?

Are your eyes only those of a human? Do you see things as people see them?

Job.10.5

Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days,

Unlike us, you're not working against a deadline. You have all eternity to work things out.

Are your days like those of a mortal or your years like those of a man,

Are Your days like the days of a mortal man? Are Your years like the days of a mighty man,

Is your lifetime merely human? Is your life so short

That thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?

So what's this all about, anyway--this compulsion to dig up some dirt, to find some skeleton in my closet?

Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.

You know good and well I'm not guilty. You also know no one can help me.

Although You know that I am not wicked, And there is no one who can deliver from Your hand?

Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

"You made me like a handcrafted piece of pottery--and now are you going to smash me to pieces?

"Your hands shaped me and made me. Will you now turn and destroy me?

"Your hands have made me and fashioned me, An intricate unity; Yet You would destroy me.

" `You formed me with your hands; you made me, and yet you completely destroy me.

Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

Don't you remember how beautifully you worked my clay? Will you reduce me now to a mud pie?

Remember that you molded me like clay. Will you now turn me to dust again?

Remember, I pray, that You have made me like clay. And will You turn me into dust again?

Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

Oh, that marvel of conception as you stirred together semen and ovum--

Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.

" `Yet your real motive--I know this was your intent--

If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

That if I so much as missed a step, you'd notice and pounce, wouldn't let me get by with a thing.

If I sinned, you would be watching me and would not let my offense go unpunished.

If I sin, then You mark me, And will not acquit me of my iniquity.

was to watch me, and if I sinned, you would not forgive my iniquity.

Job.10.15

If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;

If I'm truly guilty, I'm doomed. But if I'm innocent, it's no better--I'm still doomed. My belly is full of bitterness. I'm up to my ears in a swamp of affliction.

If I am guilty-woe to me! Even if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head, for I am full of shame and drowned in my affliction.

If I am wicked, woe to me; Even if I am righteous, I cannot lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; See my misery!

If I am guilty, too bad for me. And even if I'm innocent, I am filled with shame and misery so that I can't hold my head high.

For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.

I try to make the best of it, try to brave it out, but you're too much for me, relentless, like a lion on the prowl.

If I hold my head high, you stalk me like a lion and again display your awesome power against me.

If my head is exalted, You hunt me like a fierce lion, And again You show Yourself awesome against me.

And if I hold my head high, you hunt me like a lion and display your awesome power against me.

Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

You line up fresh witnesses against me. You compound your anger and pile on the grief and pain!

You bring new witnesses against me and increase your anger toward me; your forces come against me wave upon wave.

You renew Your witnesses against me, And increase Your indignation toward me; Changes and war are ever with me.

Again and again you witness against me. You pour out an ever-increasing volume of anger upon me and bring fresh armies against me.

Job.10.18

Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!

"So why did you have me born? I wish no one had ever laid eyes on me!

"Why then did you bring me out of the womb? I wish I had died before any eye saw me.

"Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Oh, that I had perished and no eye had seen me!

" `Why, then, did you bring me out of my mother's womb? Why didn't you let me die at birth?

I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

I wish I'd never lived--a stillborn, buried without ever having breathed.

If only I had never come into being, or had been carried straight from the womb to the grave!

Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

Isn't it time to call it quits on my life? Can't you let up, and let me smile just once

Are not my few days almost over? Turn away from me so I can have a moment's joy

I have only a little time left, so leave me alone--that I may have a little moment of comfort

Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

Before I die and am buried, before I'm nailed into my coffin, sealed in the ground,

before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and deep shadow,

Before I go to the place from which I shall not return, To the land of darkness and the shadow of death,

before I leave for the land of darkness and utter gloom, never to return.

A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.
