Matt.27.11

Jesus was placed before the governor, who questioned him: "Are you the "King of the Jews'?" Jesus said, "If you say so."

Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.

Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" Jesus said to him, "It is as you say."

Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. "Are you the King of the Jews?" the governor asked him. Jesus replied, "Yes, it is as you say."

But when the accusations rained down hot and heavy from the high priests and religious leaders, he said nothing.

When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.

And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.

But when the leading priests and other leaders made their accusations against him, Jesus remained silent.

Pilate asked him, "Do you hear that long list of accusations? Aren't you going to say something?"

Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?"

Matt.27.13

Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?"

Matt.27.13

"Don't you hear their many charges against you?" Pilate demanded.

Matt.27.14

Jesus kept silence--not a word from his mouth. The governor was impressed, really impressed.

But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge--to the great amazement of the governor.

But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.

But Jesus said nothing, much to the governor's great surprise.

It was an old custom during the Feast for the governor to pardon a single prisoner named by the crowd.

Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.

Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished.

Now it was the governor's custom to release one prisoner to the crowd each year during the Passover celebration--anyone they wanted.

At the time, they had the infamous Jesus Barabbas in prison.

With the crowd before him, Pilate said, "Which prisoner do you want me to pardon: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?"

So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

As the crowds gathered before Pilate's house that morning, he asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you--Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?"

He knew it was through sheer spite that they had turned Jesus over to him.

For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

(He knew very well that the Jewish leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy.)

While court was still in session, Pilate's wife sent him a message: "Don't get mixed up in judging this noble man. I've just been through a long and troubled night because of a dream about him."

While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."

While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him."

Just then, as Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him this message: "Leave that innocent man alone, because I had a terrible nightmare about him last night."

Meanwhile, the high priests and religious leaders had talked the crowd into asking for the pardon of Barabbas and the execution of Jesus.

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

Meanwhile, the leading priests and other leaders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death.

"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.

The governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas!"

So when the governor asked again, "Which of these two do you want me to release to you?" the crowd shouted back their reply: "Barabbas!"

"Then what do I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" They all shouted, "Nail him to a cross!"

"What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"

Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified!"

"But if I release Barabbas," Pilate asked them, "what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?" And they all shouted, "Crucify him!"

He objected, "But for what crime?" But they yelled all the louder, "Nail him to a cross!"

"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

Then the governor said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"

"Why?" Pilate demanded. "What crime has he committed?" But the crowd only roared the louder, "Crucify him!"

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere and that a riot was imminent, he took a basin of water and washed his hands in full sight of the crowd, saying, "I'm washing my hands of responsibility for this man's death. From now on, it's in your hands. You're judge and jury."

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"

When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it."

Pilate saw that he wasn't getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this man. The responsibility is yours!"

The crowd answered, "We'll take the blame, we and our children after us."

All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"

And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children."

And all the people yelled back, "We will take responsibility for his death--we and our children!"

Then he pardoned Barabbas. But he had Jesus whipped, and then handed over for crucifixion.

So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to crucify him.

The soldiers assigned to the governor took Jesus into the governor's palace and got the entire brigade together for some fun.

Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.

They made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head, and they placed a stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery, yelling, "Hail! King of the Jews!"

Then they spit on him and hit him on the head with the stick.

When they had had their fun, they took off the toga and put his own clothes back on him. Then they proceeded out to the crucifixion.

Arriving at Golgotha, the place they call "Skull Hill,"

After they had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.

Above his head they had posted the criminal charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

A signboard was fastened to the cross above Jesus' head, announcing the charge against him. It read: "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews."

People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament:

Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.

"You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days--so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you're really God's Son, come down from that cross!"

And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.

The high priests, along with the religion scholars and leaders, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him:

and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!"

and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."

"So! You can destroy the Temple and build it again in three days, can you? Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!"

"He saved others--he can't save himself! King of Israel, is he? Then let him get down from that cross. We'll all become believers then!

In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.

The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders also mocked Jesus.

He was so sure of God--well, let him rescue his "Son' now--if he wants him! He did claim to be God's Son, didn't he?"

"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

"He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.

Even the two criminals crucified next to him joined in the mockery.

He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"

From noon to three, the whole earth was dark.
