One day Dinah, the daughter Leah had given Jacob, went to visit some of the women in that country.

Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite who was chieftain there, saw her and raped her.

When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.

But when the local prince, Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, saw her, he took her and raped her.

Then he felt a strong attraction to Dinah, Jacob's daughter, fell in love with her and wooed her.

His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.

His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman.

But Shechem's love for Dinah was strong, and he tried to win her affection.

Shechem went to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl for my wife."

And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."

So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this young woman as a wife."

He even spoke to his father about it. "Get this girl for me," he demanded. "I want to marry her."

Jacob heard that Shechem had raped his daughter Dinah, but his sons were out in the fields with the livestock so he didn't say anything until they got home.

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came.

Word soon reached Jacob that his daughter had been defiled, but his sons were out in the fields herding cattle so he did nothing until they returned.

Hamor, Shechem's father, went to Jacob to work out marriage arrangements.

Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.

Gen.34.6

Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.

Gen.34.6

Meanwhile, Hamor, Shechem's father, came out to discuss the matter with Jacob.

Meanwhile Jacob's sons on their way back from the fields heard what had happened. They were outraged, explosive with anger. Shechem's rape of Jacob's daughter was intolerable in Israel and not to be put up with.

Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter-a thing that should not be done.

And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.

He arrived just as Jacob's sons were coming in from the fields. They were shocked and furious that their sister had been raped. Shechem had done a disgraceful thing against Jacob's family, a thing that should never have been done.

Hamor spoke with Jacob and his sons, "My son Shechem is head over heels in love with your daughter--give her to him as his wife.

But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.

But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.

Hamor told Jacob and his sons, "My son Shechem is truly in love with your daughter, and he longs for her to be his wife. Please let him marry her.

Intermarry with us. Give your daughters to us and we'll give our daughters to you.

Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.

Gen.34.9

And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves.

We invite you to let your daughters marry our sons, and we will give our daughters as wives for your young men.

Live together with us as one family. Settle down among us and make yourselves at home. Prosper among us."

You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."

So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it."

Shechem then spoke for himself, addressing Dinah's father and brothers: "Please, say yes. I'll pay anything.

Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.

Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give.

Then Shechem addressed Dinah's father and brothers. "Please be kind to me, and let me have her as my wife," he begged. "I will give whatever you require.

Set the bridal price as high as you will--the sky's the limit! Only give me this girl for my wife."

Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife."

Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife."

No matter what dowry or gift you demand, I will pay it--only give me the girl as my wife."

Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father with cunning. Their sister, after all, had been raped.

Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.

But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.

But Dinah's brothers deceived Shechem and Hamor because of what Shechem had done to their sister.

They said, "This is impossible. We could never give our sister to a man who was uncircumcised. Why, we'd be disgraced.

They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.

Gen.34.14

And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.

Gen.34.14

They said to them, "We couldn't possibly allow this, because you aren't circumcised. It would be a disgrace for her to marry a man like you!

Gen.34.15

The only condition on which we can talk business is if all your men become circumcised like us.

Gen.34.15

We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.

Gen.34.15

But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised,

But here is a solution. If every man among you will be circumcised like we are,

Then we will freely exchange daughters in marriage and make ourselves at home among you and become one big, happy family.

Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.

then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

But if this is not an acceptable condition, we will take our sister and leave."

But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone."

Otherwise we will take her and be on our way."

That seemed fair enough to Hamor and his son Shechem.

Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.

And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.

Hamor and Shechem gladly agreed,

The young man was so smitten with Jacob's daughter that he proceeded to do what had been asked. He was also the most admired son in his father's family.

The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.

So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.

and Shechem lost no time in acting on this request, for he wanted Dinah desperately. Shechem was a highly respected member of his family,

So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the public square and spoke to the town council:

And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying:

and he appeared with his father before the town leaders to present this proposal.

"These men like us; they are our friends. Let them settle down here and make themselves at home; there's plenty of room in the country for them. And, just think, we can even exchange our daughters in marriage.

"These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.

"These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters.

"Those men are our friends," they said. "Let's invite them to live here among us and ply their trade. For the land is large enough to hold them, and we can intermarry with them.

But these men will only accept our invitation to live with us and become one big family on one condition, that all our males become circumcised just as they themselves are.

But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.

Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.

But they will consider staying here only on one condition. Every one of us men must be circumcised, just as they are.

This is a very good deal for us--these people are very wealthy with great herds of livestock and we're going to get our hands on it. So let's do what they ask and have them settle down with us."

Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."

Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us."

But if we do this, all their flocks and possessions will become ours. Come, let's agree to this so they will settle here among us."

Everyone who was anyone in the city agreed with Hamor and his son, Shechem; every male was circumcised.

All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

So all the men agreed and were circumcised.

Three days after the circumcision, while all the men were still very sore, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each with his sword in hand, walked into the city as if they owned the place and murdered every man there.

Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.

When the rest of Jacob's sons came on the scene of slaughter, they looted the entire city in retaliation for Dinah's rape.

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You've made my name stink to high heaven among the people here, these Canaanites and Perizzites. If they decided to gang up on us and attack, as few as we are we wouldn't stand a chance; they'd wipe me and my people right off the map."

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have troubled me by making me obnoxious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and since I am few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and kill me. I shall be destroyed, my household and I."

Afterward Jacob said to Levi and Simeon, "You have made me stink among all the people of this land--among all the Canaanites and Perizzites. We are so few that they will come and crush us. We will all be killed!"

God spoke to Jacob: "Go back to Bethel. Stay there and build an altar to the God who revealed himself to you when you were running for your life from your brother Esau."

Then God said to Jacob, "Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau."

Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother."

They turned over to Jacob all the alien gods they'd been holding on to, along with their lucky-charm earrings. Jacob buried them under the oak tree in Shechem.

God continued, I am The Strong God. Have children! Flourish! A nation--a whole company of nations!- will come from you. Kings will come from your loins;

And God said to him, "I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.

With her last breath, for she was now dying, she named him Ben-oni (Son-of-My-Pain), but his father named him Ben-jamin (Son-of-Good-Fortune).

And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
