Gen.31.1

Jacob learned that Laban's sons were talking behind his back: "Jacob has used our father's wealth to make himself rich at our father's expense."

Jacob heard that Laban's sons were saying, "Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father."

Now Jacob heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, "Jacob has taken away all that was our father's, and from what was our father's he has acquired all this wealth."

But Jacob soon learned that Laban's sons were beginning to grumble. "Jacob has robbed our father!" they said. "All his wealth has been gained at our father's expense."

At the same time, Jacob noticed that Laban had changed toward him. He wasn't treating him the same.

And Jacob noticed that Laban's attitude toward him was not what it had been.

Gen.31.2

And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and indeed it was not favorable toward him as before.

And Jacob began to notice a considerable cooling in Laban's attitude toward him.

That's when GOD said to Jacob, "Go back home where you were born. I'll go with you."

Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you."

Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you."

Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Return to the land of your father and grandfather and to your relatives there, and I will be with you."

So Jacob sent word for Rachel and Leah to meet him out in the field where his flocks were.

He said, "I notice that your father has changed toward me; he doesn't treat me the same as before. But the God of my father hasn't changed; he's still with me.

He said to them, "I see that your father's attitude toward me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me.

and said to them, "I see your father's countenance, that it is not favorable toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me.

so he could talk things over with them. "Your father has turned against me and is not treating me like he used to," he told them. "But the God of my father has been with me.

You know how hard I've worked for your father.

Gen.31.6

You know that I've worked for your father with all my strength,

And you know that with all my might I have served your father.

You know how hard I have worked for your father,

Still, your father has cheated me over and over, changing my wages time and again. But God never let him really hurt me.

yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times. However, God has not allowed him to harm me.

Yet your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me.

but he has tricked me, breaking his wage agreement with me again and again. But God has not allowed him to do me any harm.

If he said, "Your wages will consist of speckled animals' the whole flock would start having speckled lambs and kids. And if he said, "From now on your wages will be streaked animals' the whole flock would have streaked ones.

If he said, 'The speckled ones will be your wages,' then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, 'The streaked ones will be your wages,' then all the flocks bore streaked young.

If he said thus: "The speckled shall be your wages,' then all the flocks bore speckled. And if he said thus: "The streaked shall be your wages,' then all the flocks bore streaked.

For if he said the speckled animals were mine, the whole flock began to produce speckled lambs. And when he changed his mind and said I could have the streaked ones, then all the lambs were born streaked.

Over and over God used your father's livestock to reward me.

During the mating season, I had a dream and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled, and spotted.

In the dream an angel of God called out to me, "Jacob!'"I said, "Yes?'

The angel of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob.' I answered, 'Here I am.'

Then the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, "Jacob.' And I said, "Here I am.'

Then in my dream, the angel of God said to me, `Jacob!' And I replied, `Yes, I'm listening!'

"He said, "Watch closely. Notice that all the goats in the flock that are mating are streaked, speckled, and mottled. I know what Laban's been doing to you.

And he said, 'Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.

And He said, "Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.

The angel said, `Look, and you will see that only the streaked, speckled, and spotted males are mating with the females of your flock. For I have seen all that Laban has done to you.

I'm the God of Bethel where you consecrated a pillar and made a vow to me. Now be on your way, get out of this place, go home to your birthplace.'"

Rachel and Leah said, "Has he treated us any better?

Gen.31.14

Then Rachel and Leah replied, "Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father's estate?

Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, "Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?

Gen.31.14

Rachel and Leah said, "That's fine with us! There's nothing for us here--none of our father's wealth will come to us anyway.

Gen.31.15

Aren't we treated worse than outsiders? All he wanted was the money he got from selling us, and he's spent all that.

Gen.31.15

Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.

Gen.31.15

Are we not considered strangers by him? For he has sold us, and also completely consumed our money.

He has reduced our rights to those of foreign women. He sold us, and what he received for us has disappeared.

Any wealth that God has seen fit to return to us from our father is justly ours and our children's. Go ahead. Do what God told you."

Laban was off shearing sheep. Rachel stole her father's household gods.

Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away.

And Jacob stole away, unknown to Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he intended to flee.

They set out secretly and never told Laban they were leaving.

Jacob got away with everything he had and was soon across the Euphrates headed for the hill country of Gilead.

So he fled with all he had, and crossing the River, he headed for the hill country of Gilead.

Laban rounded up his relatives and chased after him. Seven days later they caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

Then he took his brethren with him and pursued him for seven days' journey, and he overtook him in the mountains of Gilead.

But when he did, he gathered a group of his relatives and set out in hot pursuit. He caught up with them seven days later in the hill country of Gilead.

That night God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream and said, "Be careful what you do to Jacob, whether good or bad."

Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad."

But God had come to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, "Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad."

But the previous night God had appeared to Laban in a dream. "Be careful about what you say to Jacob!" he was told.

When Laban reached him, Jacob's tents were pitched in the Gilead mountains; Laban pitched his tents there too.

Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too.

So Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountains, and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mountains of Gilead.

So when Laban caught up with Jacob as he was camped in the hill country of Gilead, he set up his camp not far from Jacob's.

"What do you mean," said Laban, "by keeping me in the dark and sneaking off, hauling my daughters off like prisoners of war?

Then Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done? You've deceived me, and you've carried off my daughters like captives in war.

And Laban said to Jacob: "What have you done, that you have stolen away unknown to me, and carried away my daughters like captives taken with the sword?

"What do you mean by sneaking off like this?" Laban demanded. "Are my daughters prisoners, the plunder of war, that you have stolen them away like this?

Why did you run off like a thief in the night? Why didn't you tell me? Why, I would have sent you off with a great celebration--music, timbrels, flutes!

Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn't you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of tambourines and harps?

Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and not tell me; for I might have sent you away with joy and songs, with timbrel and harp?

Why did you slip away secretly? I would have given you a farewell party, with joyful singing accompanied by tambourines and harps.

But you wouldn't permit me so much as a kiss for my daughters and grandchildren. It was a stupid thing for you to do.

You didn't even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters good-by. You have done a foolish thing.

And you did not allow me to kiss my sons and my daughters. Now you have done foolishly in so doing.

Why didn't you let me kiss my daughters and grandchildren and tell them good-bye? You have acted very foolishly!

Gen.31.29

If I had a mind to, I could destroy you right now, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, "Be careful what you do to Jacob, whether good or bad.'

Gen.31.29

I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, 'Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.'

Gen.31.29

It is in my power to do you harm, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, "Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.'

Gen.31.29

I could destroy you, but the God of your father appeared to me last night and told me, `Be careful about what you say to Jacob!'

Gen.31.30

I understand. You left because you were homesick. But why did you steal my household gods?"

Gen.31.30

Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father's house. But why did you steal my gods?"

Gen.31.30

And now you have surely gone because you greatly long for your father's house, but why did you steal my gods?"

Gen.31.30

I know you feel you must go, and you long intensely for your childhood home, but why have you stolen my household gods?"

Gen.31.31

Jacob answered Laban, "I was afraid. I thought you would take your daughters away from me by brute force.

Gen.31.31

Jacob answered Laban, "I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.

Then Jacob answered and said to Laban, "Because I was afraid, for I said, "Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.'

"I rushed away because I was afraid," Jacob answered. "I said to myself, `He'll take his daughters from me by force.'

But as far as your gods are concerned, if you find that anybody here has them, that person dies. With all of us watching, look around. If you find anything here that belongs to you, take it." Jacob didn't know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

But if you find anyone who has your gods, he shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it." Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

With whomever you find your gods, do not let him live. In the presence of our brethren, identify what I have of yours and take it with you." For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

But as for your household gods, let the person who has taken them die! If you find anything that belongs to you, I swear before all these relatives of ours, I will give it back without question." But Jacob didn't know that Rachel had taken them.

Laban went through Jacob's tent, Leah's tent, and the tents of the two maids but didn't find them. He went from Leah's tent to Rachel's.

So Laban went into Jacob's tent and into Leah's tent and into the tent of the two maidservants, but he found nothing. After he came out of Leah's tent, he entered Rachel's tent.

But Rachel had taken the household gods, put them inside a camel cushion, and was sitting on them. When Laban had gone through the tent, searching high and low without finding a thing,

Rachel said to her father, "Don't think I'm being disrespectful, my master, that I can't stand before you, but I'm having my period." So even though he turned the place upside down in his search, he didn't find the household gods.

Rachel said to her father, "Don't be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I'm having my period." So he searched but could not find the household gods.

And she said to her father, "Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is with me." And he searched but did not find the household idols.

"Forgive my not getting up, Father," Rachel explained. "I'm having my monthly period." So despite his thorough search, Laban didn't find them.

Now it was Jacob's turn to get angry. He lit into Laban: "So what's my crime, what wrong have I done you that you badger me like this?

Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. "What is my crime?" he asked Laban. "What sin have I committed that you hunt me down?

Then Jacob was angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban: "What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued me?

Then Jacob became very angry. "What did you find?" he demanded of Laban. "What is my crime? You have chased me as though I were a criminal.

You've ransacked the place. Have you turned up a single thing that's yours? Let's see it--display the evidence. Our two families can be the jury and decide between us.

Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.

Although you have searched all my things, what part of your household things have you found? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both!

"In the twenty years I've worked for you, ewes and she-goats never miscarried. I never feasted on the rams from your flock.

"I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.

These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried their young, and I have not eaten the rams of your flock.

"Twenty years I have been with you, and all that time I cared for your sheep and goats so they produced healthy offspring. In all those years I never touched a single ram of yours for food.

I never brought you a torn carcass killed by wild animals but that I paid for it out of my own pocket--actually, you made me pay whether it was my fault or not.

I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.

That which was torn by beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it. You required it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.

If any were attacked and killed by wild animals, did I show them to you and ask you to reduce the count of your flock? No, I took the loss! You made me pay for every animal stolen from the flocks, whether the loss was my fault or not.

I was out in all kinds of weather, from torrid heat to freezing cold, putting in many a sleepless night.

This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

There I was! In the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes.

I worked for you through the scorching heat of the day and through cold and sleepless nights.

For twenty years I've done this: I slaved away fourteen years for your two daughters and another six years for your flock and you changed my wages ten times.

It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.

In fact, except for the grace of God--the God of my grandfather Abraham, the awe-inspiring God of my father, Isaac--you would have sent me off without a penny to my name. But God has seen your cruelty and my hard work. That is why he appeared to you last night and vindicated me."

Laban defended himself: "The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flock is my flock--everything you see is mine. But what can I do about my daughters or for the children they've had?

Laban answered Jacob, "The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne?

And Laban answered and said to Jacob, "These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and this flock is my flock; all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne?

Then Laban replied to Jacob, "These women are my daughters, and these children are my grandchildren, and these flocks and all that you have--all are mine. But what can I do now to my own daughters and grandchildren?

So let's settle things between us, make a covenant--God will be the witness between us."

Laban named it in Aramaic, Yegar-sahadutha (Witness Monument); Jacob echoed the naming in Hebrew, Galeed (Witness Monument).
