GOD's Message came to me:

The word of the LORD came to me:

Ezek.17.1

And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

Ezek.17.1

Then this message came to me from the LORD:

Ezek.17.2

"Son of man, make a riddle for the house of Israel. Tell them a story.

Ezek.17.2

"Son of man, set forth an allegory and tell the house of Israel a parable.

Ezek.17.2

"Son of man, pose a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel,

Ezek.17.2

"Son of man, tell this story to the people of Israel.

Ezek.17.3

Say, "GOD, the Master, says: A great eagle with a huge wingspan and long feathers, In full plumage and bright colors, came to Lebanon And took the top off a cedar,

Ezek.17.3

Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: A great eagle with powerful wings, long feathers and full plumage of varied colors came to Lebanon. Taking hold of the top of a cedar,

Ezek.17.3

and say, "Thus says the Lord GOD: "A great eagle with large wings and long pinions, Full of feathers of various colors, Came to Lebanon And took from the cedar the highest branch.

Ezek.17.3

Give them this message from the Sovereign LORD: A great eagle with broad wings full of many-colored feathers came to Lebanon. He took hold of the highest branch of a cedar tree

Ezek.17.4

broke off the top branch, Took it to a land of traders, and set it down in a city of shopkeepers.

Ezek.17.4

he broke off its topmost shoot and carried it away to a land of merchants, where he planted it in a city of traders.

Ezek.17.4

He cropped off its topmost young twig And carried it to a land of trade; He set it in a city of merchants.

Ezek.17.4

and plucked off its topmost shoot. Then he carried it away to a city filled with merchants, where he planted it.

Ezek.17.5

Then he took a cutting from the land and planted it in good, well-watered soil, like a willow on a riverbank.

Ezek.17.5

"'He took some of the seed of your land and put it in fertile soil. He planted it like a willow by abundant water,

Ezek.17.5

Then he took some of the seed of the land And planted it in a fertile field; He placed it by abundant waters And set it like a willow tree.

Ezek.17.5

"Then he planted one of its seedlings in fertile ground beside a broad river, where it would grow as quickly as a willow tree.

Ezek.17.6

It sprouted into a flourishing vine, low to the ground. Its branches grew toward the eagle and the roots became established--A vine putting out shoots, developing branches.

Ezek.17.6

and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. Its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs.

Ezek.17.6

And it grew and became a spreading vine of low stature; Its branches turned toward him, But its roots were under it. So it became a vine, Brought forth branches, And put forth shoots.

Ezek.17.6

It took root there and grew into a low, spreading vine. Its branches turned up toward the eagle, and its roots grew down beneath it. It soon produced strong branches and luxuriant leaves.

Ezek.17.7

There was another great eagle with a huge wingspan and thickly feathered. This vine sent out its roots toward him from the place where it was planted. Its branches reached out to him so he could water it from a long distance.

Ezek.17.7

"'But there was another great eagle with powerful wings and full plumage. The vine now sent out its roots toward him from the plot where it was planted and stretched out its branches to him for water.

Ezek.17.7

"But there was another great eagle with large wings and many feathers; And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, And stretched its branches toward him, From the garden terrace where it had been planted, That he might water it.

Ezek.17.7

But then another great eagle with broad wings and full plumage came along. So the vine sent its roots and branches out toward him for water.

Ezek.17.8

It had been planted in good, well-watered soil, And it put out branches and bore fruit, and became a noble vine.

Ezek.17.8

It had been planted in good soil by abundant water so that it would produce branches, bear fruit and become a splendid vine.'

Ezek.17.8

It was planted in good soil by many waters, To bring forth branches, bear fruit, And become a majestic vine."'

Ezek.17.8

The vine did this even though it was already planted in good soil and had plenty of water so it could grow into a splendid vine and produce rich leaves and luscious fruit.

Ezek.17.9

GOD, the Master, says, Will it thrive? Won't he just pull it up by the roots and leave the grapes to rot And the branches to shrivel up, a withered, dead vine? It won't take much strength or many hands to pull it up.

Ezek.17.9

"Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Will it thrive? Will it not be uprooted and stripped of its fruit so that it withers? All its new growth will wither. It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it up by the roots.

Ezek.17.9

"Say, "Thus says the Lord GOD: "Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots, Cut off its fruit, And leave it to wither? All of its spring leaves will wither, And no great power or many people Will be needed to pluck it up by its roots.

Ezek.17.9

"So now the Sovereign LORD asks: Should I let this vine grow and prosper? No! I will pull it out, roots and all! I will cut off its fruit and let its leaves wither and die. I will pull it out easily enough--it won't take a strong arm or a large army to do it.

Ezek.17.10

Even if it's transplanted, will it thrive? When the hot east wind strikes it, won't it shrivel up? Won't it dry up and blow away from the place where it was planted?'" [JC]

Ezek.17.10

Even if it is transplanted, will it thrive? Will it not wither completely when the east wind strikes it-wither away in the plot where it grew?'"

Ezek.17.10

Behold, it is planted, Will it thrive? Will it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the garden terrace where it grew.""'

Ezek.17.10

Then when the vine is transplanted, will it thrive? No, it will wither away completely when the east wind blows against it. It will die in the same good soil where it had grown so well."

Ezek.17.11

GOD's Message came to me:

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

Then this message came to me from the LORD:

Ezek.17.12

"Tell this house of rebels, "Do you get it? Do you know what this means?'"Tell them, "The king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and took its king and its leaders back to Babylon.

Ezek.17.12

"Say to this rebellious house, 'Do you not know what these things mean?' Say to them: 'The king of Babylon went to Jerusalem and carried off her king and her nobles, bringing them back with him to Babylon.

Ezek.17.12

"Say now to the rebellious house: "Do you not know what these things mean?' Tell them, "Indeed the king of Babylon went to Jerusalem and took its king and princes, and led them with him to Babylon.

Ezek.17.12

"Say to these rebels of Israel: Don't you understand the meaning of this riddle of the eagles? I will tell you, says the Sovereign LORD. The king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, took away her king and princes, and brought them to Babylon.

Ezek.17.13

He took one of the royal family and made a covenant with him, making him swear his loyalty. The king of Babylon took all the top leaders into exile

Ezek.17.13

Then he took a member of the royal family and made a treaty with him, putting him under oath. He also carried away the leading men of the land,

Ezek.17.13

And he took the king's offspring, made a covenant with him, and put him under oath. He also took away the mighty of the land,

Ezek.17.13

He made a treaty with a member of the royal family and made him take an oath of loyalty. He also exiled Israel's most influential leaders,

Ezek.17.14

to make sure that this kingdom stayed weak--didn't get any big ideas of itself--and kept the covenant with him so that it would have a future.

Ezek.17.14

so that the kingdom would be brought low, unable to rise again, surviving only by keeping his treaty.

Ezek.17.14

that the kingdom might be brought low and not lift itself up, but that by keeping his covenant it might stand.

Ezek.17.14

so Israel would not become strong again and revolt. Only by keeping her treaty with Babylon could Israel maintain her national identity.

Ezek.17.15

But he rebelled and sent emissaries to Egypt to recruit horses and a big army. Do you think that's going to work? Are they going to get by with this? Does anyone break a covenant and get off scot-free?

Ezek.17.15

But the king rebelled against him by sending his envoys to Egypt to get horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he who does such things escape? Will he break the treaty and yet escape?

Ezek.17.15

But he rebelled against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt, that they might give him horses and many people. Will he prosper? Will he who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still be delivered?

Ezek.17.15

"Nevertheless, this man of Israel's royal family rebelled against Babylon, sending ambassadors to Egypt to request a great army and many horses. Can Israel break her sworn treaties like that and get away with it?

Ezek.17.16

As sure as I am the living God, this king who broke his pledge of loyalty and his covenant will die in that country, in Babylon.

Ezek.17.16

"'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, he shall die in Babylon, in the land of the king who put him on the throne, whose oath he despised and whose treaty he broke.

Ezek.17.16

"As I live,' says the Lord GOD, "surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised and whose covenant he broke--with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die.

Ezek.17.16

No! For as surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, the king of Israel will die in Babylon, the land of the king who put him in power and whose treaty he despised and broke.

Ezek.17.17

Pharaoh with his big army--all those soldiers!-won't lift a finger to fight for him when Babylon sets siege to the city and kills everyone inside.

Ezek.17.17

Pharaoh with his mighty army and great horde will be of no help to him in war, when ramps are built and siege works erected to destroy many lives.

Ezek.17.17

Nor will Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company do anything in the war, when they heap up a siege mound and build a wall to cut off many persons.

Ezek.17.17

Pharaoh and all his mighty army will fail to help Israel when the king of Babylon lays siege to Jerusalem again and destroys the lives of many.

Ezek.17.18

Because he broke his word and broke the covenant, even though he gave his solemn promise, because he went ahead and did all these things anyway, he won't escape.

Ezek.17.18

He despised the oath by breaking the covenant. Because he had given his hand in pledge and yet did all these things, he shall not escape.

Ezek.17.18

Since he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, and in fact gave his hand and still did all these things, he shall not escape."'

Ezek.17.18

For the king of Israel broke his treaty after swearing to obey; therefore, he will not escape.

Ezek.17.19

Therefore, GOD, the Master, says, As sure as I am the living God, because the king despised my oath and broke my covenant, I'll bring the consequences crashing down on his head.

Ezek.17.19

"'Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: As surely as I live, I will bring down on his head my oath that he despised and my covenant that he broke.

Ezek.17.19

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "As I live, surely My oath which he despised, and My covenant which he broke, I will recompense on his own head.

Ezek.17.19

"So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: As surely as I live, I will punish him for breaking my covenant and despising the solemn oath he made in my name.

Ezek.17.20

I'll send out a search party and catch him. I'll take him to Babylon and have him brought to trial because of his total disregard for me.

Ezek.17.20

I will spread my net for him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon and execute judgment upon him there because he was unfaithful to me.

Ezek.17.20

I will spread My net over him, and he shall be taken in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon and try him there for the treason which he committed against Me.

Ezek.17.20

I will throw my net over him and capture him in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon and deal with him there for this treason against me.

Ezek.17.21

All his elite soldiers, along with the rest of the army, will be killed in battle, and whoever is left will be scattered to the four winds. Then you'll realize that I, GOD, have spoken.

Ezek.17.21

All his fleeing troops will fall by the sword, and the survivors will be scattered to the winds. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken.

Ezek.17.21

All his fugitives with all his troops shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered to every wind; and you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken."

Ezek.17.21

And all the best warriors of Israel will be killed in battle, and those remaining in the city will be scattered to the four winds. Then you will know that I, the LORD, have spoken these words.

Ezek.17.22

GOD, the Master, says, I personally will take a shoot from the top of the towering cedar, a cutting from the crown of the tree, and plant it on a high and towering mountain,

"'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain.

Ezek.17.22

Thus says the Lord GOD: "I will take also one of the highest branches of the high cedar and set it out. I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and will plant it on a high and prominent mountain.

Ezek.17.22

"And the Sovereign LORD says: I will take a tender shoot from the top of a tall cedar, and I will plant it on the top of Israel's highest mountain.

Ezek.17.23

on the high mountain of Israel. It will grow, putting out branches and fruit--a majestic cedar. Birds of every sort and kind will live under it. They'll build nests in the shade of its branches.

Ezek.17.23

On the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it; it will produce branches and bear fruit and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches.

Ezek.17.23

On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it; and it will bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a majestic cedar. Under it will dwell birds of every sort; in the shadow of its branches they will dwell.

Ezek.17.23

It will become a noble cedar, sending forth its branches and producing seed. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter beneath its branches.

Ezek.17.24

All the trees of the field will recognize that I, GOD, made the great tree small and the small tree great, made the green tree turn dry and the dry tree sprout green branches. I, GOD, said it--and I did it.'"

Ezek.17.24

All the trees of the field will know that I the LORD bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. "'I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it.'"

Ezek.17.24

And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, have brought down the high tree and exalted the low tree, dried up the green tree and made the dry tree flourish; I, the LORD, have spoken and have done it."

Ezek.17.24

And all the trees will know that it is I, the LORD, who cuts down the tall tree and helps the short tree to grow tall. It is I who makes the green tree wither and gives new life to the dead tree. I, the LORD, have spoken! I will do what I have said."

Ezek.18.1

The word of the LORD came to me again, saying,

Then another message came to me from the LORD:

Ezek.18.2

"What do you people mean by going around the country repeating the saying, The parents ate green apples, The children got stomachache?

Ezek.18.2

"What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: "'The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'?

Ezek.18.2

"What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: "The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge'?

Ezek.18.2

"Why do you quote this proverb in the land of Israel: `The parents have eaten sour grapes, but their children's mouths pucker at the taste'?

Ezek.18.3

"As sure as I'm the living God, you're not going to repeat this saying in Israel any longer.

Ezek.18.3

"As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.

Ezek.18.3

"As I live," says the Lord GOD, "you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel.

Ezek.18.3

As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, you will not say this proverb anymore in Israel.

Ezek.18.4

Every soul--man, woman, child--belongs to me, parent and child alike. You die for your own sin, not another's.

Ezek.18.4

For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son-both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

Ezek.18.4

"Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.

Ezek.18.4

For all people are mine to judge--both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins will be the one who dies.

Ezek.18.5

"Imagine a person who lives well, treating others fairly, keeping good relationships--

Ezek.18.5

"Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right.

Ezek.18.5

But if a man is just And does what is lawful and right;

Ezek.18.5

"Suppose a certain man is just and does what is lawful and right,

Ezek.18.6

doesn't eat at the pagan shrines, doesn't worship the idols so popular in Israel, doesn't seduce a neighbor's spouse, doesn't indulge in casual sex,

Ezek.18.6

He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife or lie with a woman during her period.

Ezek.18.6

If he has not eaten on the mountains, Nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, Nor defiled his neighbor's wife, Nor approached a woman during her impurity;

Ezek.18.6

and he has not feasted in the mountains before Israel's idols or worshiped them. And suppose he does not commit adultery or have intercourse with a woman during her menstrual period.

Ezek.18.7

doesn't bully anyone, doesn't pile up bad debts, doesn't steal, doesn't refuse food to the hungry, doesn't refuse clothing to the ill-clad,

Ezek.18.7

He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.

Ezek.18.7

If he has not oppressed anyone, But has restored to the debtor his pledge; Has robbed no one by violence, But has given his bread to the hungry And covered the naked with clothing;

Ezek.18.7

Suppose he is a merciful creditor, not keeping the items given in pledge by poor debtors, and does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for people in need.

Ezek.18.8

doesn't exploit the poor, doesn't live by impulse and greed, doesn't treat one person better than another,

Ezek.18.8

He does not lend at usury or take excessive interest. He withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between man and man.

Ezek.18.8

If he has not exacted usury Nor taken any increase, But has withdrawn his hand from iniquity And executed true judgment between man and man;

Ezek.18.8

And suppose he grants loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others,

Ezek.18.9

But lives by my statutes and faithfully honors and obeys my laws. This person who lives upright and well shall live a full and true life. Decree of GOD, the Master.

Ezek.18.9

He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD.

Ezek.18.9

If he has walked in My statutes And kept My judgments faithfully-- He is just; He shall surely live!" Says the Lord GOD.

Ezek.18.9

and faithfully obeys my laws and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign LORD.

Ezek.18.10

"But if this person has a child who turns violent and murders and goes off and does any of these things,

Ezek.18.10

"Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things

Ezek.18.10

"If he begets a son who is a robber Or a shedder of blood, Who does any of these things

Ezek.18.10

"But suppose that man has a son who grows up to be a robber or murderer and refuses to do what is right.

Ezek.18.11

even though the parent has done none of them--eats at the pagan shrines, seduces his neighbor's spouse,

Ezek.18.11

(though the father has done none of them): "He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbor's wife.

Ezek.18.11

And does none of those duties, But has eaten on the mountains Or defiled his neighbor's wife;

Ezek.18.11

And suppose that son does all the evil things his father would never do--worships idols on the mountains, commits adultery,

Ezek.18.12

bullies the weak, steals, piles up bad debts, admires idols, commits outrageous obscenities,

Ezek.18.12

He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things.

Ezek.18.12

If he has oppressed the poor and needy, Robbed by violence, Not restored the pledge, Lifted his eyes to the idols, Or committed abomination;

Ezek.18.12

oppresses the poor and helpless, steals from debtors by refusing to let them redeem what they have given in pledge, worships idols and takes part in loathsome practices,

Ezek.18.13

exploits the poor "-do you think this person, the child, will live? Not a chance! Because he's done all these vile things, he'll die. And his death will be his own fault.

Ezek.18.13

He lends at usury and takes excessive interest. Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he will surely be put to death and his blood will be on his own head.

Ezek.18.13

If he has exacted usury Or taken increase-- Shall he then live? He shall not live! If he has done any of these abominations, He shall surely die; His blood shall be upon him.

Ezek.18.13

and lends money at interest. Should such a sinful person live? No! He must die and must take full blame.

Ezek.18.14

"Now look: Suppose that this child has a child who sees all the sins done by his parent. The child sees them, but doesn't follow in the parent's footsteps--

Ezek.18.14

"But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:

Ezek.18.14

"If, however, he begets a son Who sees all the sins which his father has done, And considers but does not do likewise;

Ezek.18.14

"But suppose that sinful son, in turn, has a son who sees his father's wickedness but decides against that kind of life.

Ezek.18.15

doesn't eat at the pagan shrines, doesn't worship the popular idols of Israel, doesn't seduce his neighbor's spouse,

Ezek.18.15

"He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor's wife.

Ezek.18.15

Who has not eaten on the mountains, Nor lifted his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, Nor defiled his neighbor's wife;

Suppose this son refuses to worship idols on the mountains, does not commit adultery,

Ezek.18.16

doesn't bully anyone, doesn't refuse to loan money, doesn't steal, doesn't refuse food to the hungry, doesn't refuse to give clothes to the ill-clad,

He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.

doesn't live by impulse and greed, doesn't exploit the poor. He does what I say; he performs my laws and lives by my statutes. "This person will not die for the sins of the parent; he will live truly and well.

Ezek.18.17

He withholds his hand from sin and takes no usury or excessive interest. He keeps my laws and follows my decrees. He will not die for his father's sin; he will surely live.

Ezek.18.17

Who has withdrawn his hand from the poor And not received usury or increase, But has executed My judgments And walked in My statutes-- He shall not die for the iniquity of his father; He shall surely live!

Ezek.18.17

helps the poor, does not lend money at interest, and obeys all my regulations and laws. Such a person will not die because of his father's sins; he will surely live.

Ezek.18.18

But the parent will die for what the parent did, for the sins of--oppressing the weak, robbing brothers and sisters, doing what is dead wrong in the community.

Ezek.18.18

But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.

Ezek.18.18

"As for his father, Because he cruelly oppressed, Robbed his brother by violence, And did what is not good among his people, Behold, he shall die for his iniquity.

Ezek.18.18

But the father will die for the many sins he committed--for being cruel and robbing close relatives, doing what was clearly wrong among his people.

Ezek.18.19

"Do you need to ask, "So why does the child not share the guilt of the parent?'"Isn't it plain? It's because the child did what is fair and right. Since the child was careful to do what is lawful and right, the child will live truly and well.

Ezek.18.19

"Yet you ask, 'Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?' Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.

Ezek.18.19

"Yet you say, "Why should the son not bear the guilt of the father?' Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them, he shall surely live.

Ezek.18.19

" `What?' you ask. `Doesn't the child pay for the parent's sins?' No! For if the child does what is right and keeps my laws, that child will surely live.

Ezek.18.20

The soul that sins is the soul that dies. The child does not share the guilt of the parent, nor the parent the guilt of the child. If you live upright and well, you get the credit; if you live a wicked life, you're guilty as charged.

Ezek.18.20

The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.

Ezek.18.20

The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

Ezek.18.20

The one who sins is the one who dies. The child will not be punished for the parent's sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child's sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own goodness, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.

Ezek.18.21

"But a wicked person who turns his back on that life of sin and keeps all my statutes, living a just and righteous life, he'll live, really live. He won't die.

Ezek.18.21

"But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.

"But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die.

If a good person turns away from his good life and takes up sinning, he'll die for it. He'll die for his own sin.

If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die.
