All this time Saul was breathing down the necks of the Master's disciples, out for the kill. He went to the Chief Priest

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest

Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath. He was eager to destroy the Lord's followers, so he went to the high priest.

and got arrest warrants to take to the meeting places in Damascus so that if he found anyone there belonging to the Way, whether men or women, he could arrest them and bring them to Jerusalem.

and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

He set off. When he got to the outskirts of Damascus, he was suddenly dazed by a blinding flash of light.

As he was nearing Damascus on this mission, a brilliant light from heaven suddenly beamed down upon him!

As he fell to the ground, he heard a voice: "Saul, Saul, why are you out to get me?"

Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"

He said, "Who are you, Master?I am Jesus, the One you're hunting down.

"Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked.

And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads."

"Who are you, sir?" Saul asked. And the voice replied, "I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting!

I want you to get up and enter the city. In the city you'll be told what to do next."

"I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

His companions stood there dumbstruck--they could hear the sound, but couldn't see anyone--

The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone.

And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one.

The men with Saul stood speechless with surprise, for they heard the sound of someone's voice, but they saw no one!

while Saul, picking himself up off the ground, found himself stone blind. They had to take him by the hand and lead him into Damascus.

Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus.

Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.

As Saul picked himself up off the ground, he found that he was blind.

He continued blind for three days. He ate nothing, drank nothing.

For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.

And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

So his companions led him by the hand to Damascus. He remained there blind for three days. And all that time he went without food and water.

There was a disciple in Damascus by the name of Ananias. The Master spoke to him in a vision: "Ananias.Yes, Master?" he answered.

Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord."

Now there was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, calling, "Ananias!Yes, Lord!" he replied.

"Get up and go over to Straight Avenue. Ask at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus. His name is Saul. He's there praying.

The Lord told him, "Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying.

So the Lord said to him, "Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying.

The Lord said, "Go over to Straight Street, to the house of Judas. When you arrive, ask for Saul of Tarsus. He is praying to me right now.

He has just had a dream in which he saw a man named Ananias enter the house and lay hands on him so he could see again."

In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight."

And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight."

I have shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming in and laying his hands on him so that he can see again."

Ananias protested, "Master, you can't be serious. Everybody's talking about this man and the terrible things he's been doing, his reign of terror against your people in Jerusalem!

"Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.

Then Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.

"But Lord," exclaimed Ananias, "I've heard about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem!

And now he's shown up here with papers from the Chief Priest that give him license to do the same to us."

And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name."

And we hear that he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest every believer in Damascus."

But the Master said, "Don't argue. Go! I have picked him as my personal representative to Gentiles and kings and Jews.

But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.

But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.

But the Lord said, "Go and do what I say. For Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.

And now I'm about to show him what he's in for--the hard suffering that goes with this job."

So Ananias went and found the house, placed his hands on blind Saul, and said, "Brother Saul, the Master sent me, the same Jesus you saw on your way here. He sent me so you could see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

but then went right to work, wasting no time, preaching in the meeting places that this Jesus was the Son of God.

They were caught off guard by this and, not at all sure they could trust him, they kept saying, "Isn't this the man who wreaked havoc in Jerusalem among the believers? And didn't he come here to do the same thing--arrest us and drag us off to jail in Jerusalem for sentencing by the high priests?"

All those who heard him were astonished and asked, "Isn't he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name? And hasn't he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?"

Then all who heard were amazed, and said, "Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?"

All who heard him were amazed. "Isn't this the same man who persecuted Jesus' followers with such devastation in Jerusalem?" they asked. "And we understand that he came here to arrest them and take them in chains to the leading priests."

But their suspicions didn't slow Saul down for even a minute. His momentum was up now and he plowed straight into the opposition, disarming the Damascus Jews and trying to show them that this Jesus was the Messiah.

Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.

But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ.

Saul's preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in Damascus couldn't refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah.

After this had gone on quite a long time, some Jews conspired to kill him,

But Saul was told about their plot, and that they were watching for him day and night at the city gate so they could murder him.

Then one night the disciples engineered his escape by lowering him over the wall in a basket.

But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall.

Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket.

So during the night, some of the other believers let him down in a large basket through an opening in the city wall.

Back in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him. They didn't trust him one bit.

Then Barnabas took him under his wing. He introduced him to the apostles and stood up for him, told them how Saul had seen and spoken to the Master on the Damascus Road and how in Damascus itself he had laid his life on the line with his bold preaching in Jesus' name.

But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.

After that he was accepted as one of them, going in and out of Jerusalem with no questions asked, uninhibited as he preached in the Master's name.

So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.

Then the apostles accepted Saul, and after that he was constantly with them in Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord.

But then he ran afoul of a group called Hellenists--he had been engaged in a running argument with them--who plotted his murder.

He talked and debated with the Grecian Jews, but they tried to kill him.

And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him.

When his friends learned of the plot, they got him out of town, took him to Caesarea, and then shipped him off to Tarsus.

Things calmed down after that and the church had smooth sailing for a while. All over the country--Judea, Samaria, Galilee--the church grew. They were permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God. The Holy Spirit was with them, strengthening them. They prospered wonderfully.

Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.
