There once was a man who lived in Ramathaim. He was descended from the old Zuph family in the Ephraim hills. His name was Elkanah. (He was connected with the Zuphs from Ephraim through his father Jeroham, his grandfather Elihu, and his great-grandfather Tohu.)

There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

There was a man named Elkanah who lived in Ramah in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham and grandson of Elihu, from the family of Tohu and the clan of Zuph.

He had two wives. The first was Hannah; the second was Peninnah. Peninnah had children; Hannah did not.

Every year this man went from his hometown up to Shiloh to worship and offer a sacrifice to GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies. Eli and his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as the priests of GOD there.

Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.

This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

Each year Elkanah and his family would travel to Shiloh to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at the Tabernacle. The priests of the LORD at that time were the two sons of Eli--Hophni and Phinehas.

When Elkanah sacrificed, he passed helpings from the sacrificial meal around to his wife Peninnah and all her children,

Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.

And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters.

On the day Elkanah presented his sacrifice, he would give portions of the sacrifice to Peninnah and each of her children.

but he always gave an especially generous helping to Hannah because he loved her so much, and because GOD had not given her children.

But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb.

But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the LORD had closed her womb.

But he gave Hannah a special portion because he loved her very much, even though the LORD had given her no children.

But her rival wife taunted her cruelly, rubbing it in and never letting her forget that GOD had not given her children.

And because the LORD had closed her womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.

And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the LORD had closed her womb.

But Peninnah made fun of Hannah because the LORD had closed her womb.

This went on year after year. Every time she went to the sanctuary of GOD she could expect to be taunted. Hannah was reduced to tears and had no appetite.

This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

Year after year it was the same--Peninnah would taunt Hannah as they went to the Tabernacle. Hannah would finally be reduced to tears and would not even eat.

Her husband Elkanah said, "Oh, Hannah, why are you crying? Why aren't you eating? And why are you so upset? Am I not of more worth to you than ten sons?"

Elkanah her husband would say to her, "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don't you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don't I mean more to you than ten sons?"

Then Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"

"What's the matter, Hannah?" Elkanah would ask. "Why aren't you eating? Why be so sad just because you have no children? You have me--isn't that better than having ten sons?"

So Hannah ate. Then she pulled herself together, slipped away quietly, and entered the sanctuary. The priest Eli was on duty at the entrance to GOD's Temple in the customary seat.

Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the LORD's temple.

So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the LORD.

Once when they were at Shiloh, Hannah went over to the Tabernacle after supper to pray to the LORD. Eli the priest was sitting at his customary place beside the entrance.

Crushed in soul, Hannah prayed to GOD and cried and cried--inconsolably.

In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD.

1Sam.1.10

And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish.

Hannah was in deep anguish, crying bitterly as she prayed to the LORD.

Then she made a vow: Oh, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, If you'll take a good, hard look at my pain, If you'll quit neglecting me and go into action for me By giving me a son, I'll give him completely, unreservedly to you. I'll set him apart for a life of holy discipline.

And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."

Then she made a vow and said, "O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head."

And she made this vow: "O LORD Almighty, if you will look down upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the LORD, his hair will never be cut."

It so happened that as she continued in prayer before GOD, Eli was watching her closely.

As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.

And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth.

As she was praying to the LORD, Eli watched her.

Hannah was praying in her heart, silently. Her lips moved, but no sound was heard. Eli jumped to the conclusion that she was drunk.

Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk

Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.

Seeing her lips moving but hearing no sound, he thought she had been drinking.

He approached her and said, "You're drunk! How long do you plan to keep this up? Sober up, woman!"

and said to her, "How long will you keep on getting drunk? Get rid of your wine."

So Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!"

"Must you come here drunk?" he demanded. "Throw away your wine!"

1Sam.1.15

Hannah said, "Oh no, sir--please! I'm a woman hard used. I haven't been drinking. Not a drop of wine or beer. The only thing I've been pouring out is my heart, pouring it out to GOD.

1Sam.1.15

"Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD.

1Sam.1.15

But Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

1Sam.1.15

"Oh no, sir!" she replied, "I'm not drunk! But I am very sad, and I was pouring out my heart to the LORD.

1Sam.1.16

Don't for a minute think I'm a bad woman. It's because I'm so desperately unhappy and in such pain that I've stayed here so long."

1Sam.1.16

Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."

1Sam.1.16

Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now."

1Sam.1.16

Please don't think I am a wicked woman! For I have been praying out of great anguish and sorrow."

Eli answered her, "Go in peace. And may the God of Israel give you what you have asked of him."

Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."

Then Eli answered and said, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him."

"In that case," Eli said, "cheer up! May the God of Israel grant the request you have asked of him."

"Think well of me--and pray for me!" she said, and went her way. Then she ate heartily, her face radiant.

She said, "May your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.

And she said, "Let your maidservant find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

"Oh, thank you, sir!" she exclaimed. Then she went back and began to eat again, and she was no longer sad.

Up before dawn, they worshiped GOD and returned home to Ramah. Elkanah slept with Hannah his wife, and GOD began making the necessary arrangements in response to what she had asked.

Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah lay with Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.

Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her.

The entire family got up early the next morning and went to worship the LORD once more. Then they returned home to Ramah. When Elkanah slept with Hannah, the LORD remembered her request,

Before the year was out, Hannah had conceived and given birth to a son. She named him Samuel, explaining, "I asked GOD for him."

So in the course of time Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."

So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked for him from the LORD."

and in due time she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, "I asked the LORD for him."

When Elkanah next took his family on their annual trip to Shiloh to worship GOD, offering sacrifices and keeping his vow,

When the man Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,

Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow.

The next year Elkanah, Peninnah, and their children went on their annual trip to offer a sacrifice to the LORD.

1Sam.1.22

Hannah didn't go. She told her husband, "After the child is weaned, I'll bring him myself and present him before GOD-and that's where he'll stay, for good."

1Sam.1.22

Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."

1Sam.1.22

But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever."

1Sam.1.22

But Hannah did not go. She told her husband, "Wait until the baby is weaned. Then I will take him to the Tabernacle and leave him there with the LORD permanently."

1Sam.1.23

Elkanah said to his wife, "Do what you think is best. Stay home until you have weaned him. Yes! Let GOD complete what he has begun!" So she did. She stayed home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

"Do what seems best to you," Elkanah her husband told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

1Sam.1.23

So Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the LORD establish His word." Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.

1Sam.1.23

"Whatever you think is best," Elkanah agreed. "Stay here for now, and may the LORD help you keep your promise." So she stayed home and nursed the baby.

Then she took him up to Shiloh, bringing also the makings of a generous sacrificial meal--a prize bull, flour, and wine. The child was so young to be sent off!

After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.

Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh. And the child was young.

When the child was weaned, Hannah took him to the Tabernacle in Shiloh. They brought along a three-year-old bull for the sacrifice and half a bushel of flour and some wine.

They first butchered the bull, then brought the child to Eli.

When they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli,

Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli.

After sacrificing the bull, they took the child to Eli.

1Sam.1.26

Hannah said, "Excuse me, sir. Would you believe that I'm the very woman who was standing before you at this very spot, praying to GOD?

and she said to him, "As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.

1Sam.1.26

And she said, "O my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.

1Sam.1.26

"Sir, do you remember me?" Hannah asked. "I am the woman who stood here several years ago praying to the LORD.

1Sam.1.27

I prayed for this child, and GOD gave me what I asked for.

1Sam.1.27

I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.

1Sam.1.27

For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.

1Sam.1.27

I asked the LORD to give me this child, and he has given me my request.

1Sam.1.28

And now I have dedicated him to GOD. He's dedicated to GOD for life." Then and there, they worshiped GOD.

1Sam.1.28

So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there.

1Sam.1.28

Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD." So they worshiped the LORD there.

Now I am giving him to the LORD, and he will belong to the LORD his whole life." And they worshiped the LORD there.

Hannah prayed: I'm bursting with God-news! I'm walking on air. I'm laughing at my rivals. I'm dancing my salvation.

1Sam.2.1

Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.

1Sam.2.1

And Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the LORD; My horn is exalted in the LORD. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation.

Then Hannah prayed: "My heart rejoices in the LORD! Oh, how the LORD has blessed me! Now I have an answer for my enemies, as I delight in your deliverance.

Nothing and no one is holy like GOD, no rock mountain like our God.

"There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

"No one is holy like the LORD, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.

No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

Don't dare talk pretentiously--not a word of boasting, ever! For GOD knows what's going on. He takes the measure of everything that happens.

"Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.

"Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For the LORD is the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed.

"Stop acting so proud and haughty! Don't speak with such arrogance! The LORD is a God who knows your deeds; and he will judge you for what you have done.

The weapons of the strong are smashed to pieces, while the weak are infused with fresh strength.

"The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.

"The bows of the mighty men are broken, And those who stumbled are girded with strength.

Those who were mighty are mighty no more; and those who were weak are now strong.

The well-fed are out begging in the streets for crusts, while the hungry are getting second helpings. The barren woman has a houseful of children, while the mother of many is bereft.

Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry hunger no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away.

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble.

Those who were well fed are now starving; and those who were starving are now full. The barren woman now has seven children; but the woman with many children will have no more.

GOD brings death and GOD brings life, brings down to the grave and raises up.

The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.

The LORD makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up.

The LORD makes one poor and another rich; he brings one down and lifts another up.

He puts poor people on their feet again; he rekindles burned-out lives with fresh hope, Restoring dignity and respect to their lives--a place in the sun! For the very structures of earth are GOD's; he has laid out his operations on a firm foundation.

He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world.

He lifts the poor from the dust--yes, from a pile of ashes! He treats them like princes, placing them in seats of honor. "For all the earth is the LORD's, and he has set the world in order.

He protectively cares for his faithful friends, step by step, but leaves the wicked to stumble in the dark. No one makes it in this life by sheer muscle!

He will guard the feet of his saints, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness. "It is not by strength that one prevails;

He will guard the feet of His saints, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. "For by strength no man shall prevail.

He will protect his godly ones, but the wicked will perish in darkness. No one will succeed by strength alone.

GOD's enemies will be blasted out of the sky, crashed in a heap and burned. GOD will set things right all over the earth, he'll give strength to his king, he'll set his anointed on top of the world!

those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder against them from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed."

The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of His anointed."

Those who fight against the LORD will be broken. He thunders against them from heaven; the LORD judges throughout the earth. He gives mighty strength to his king; he increases the might of his anointed one."

Elkanah went home to Ramah. The boy stayed and served GOD in the company of Eli the priest.

Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest.

Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child ministered to the LORD before Eli the priest.

Then Elkanah and Hannah returned home to Ramah without Samuel. And the boy became the LORD's helper, for he assisted Eli the priest.

Eli's own sons were a bad lot. They didn't know GOD and could not have cared less

Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD.

1Sam.2.12

Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the LORD.

Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the LORD

about the customs of priests among the people. Ordinarily, when someone offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant was supposed to come up and, while the meat was boiling,

1Sam.2.13

Now it was the practice of the priests with the people that whenever anyone offered a sacrifice and while the meat was being boiled, the servant of the priest would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand.

1Sam.2.13

And the priests' custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling.

or for their duties as priests. Whenever anyone offered a sacrifice, Eli's sons would send over a servant with a three-pronged fork. While the meat of the sacrificed animal was still boiling,

stab a three-pronged fork into the cooking pot. The priest then got whatever came up on the fork. But this is how Eli's sons treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh to offer sacrifices to GOD.

He would plunge it into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot, and the priest would take for himself whatever the fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.

1Sam.2.14

Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.

the servant would stick the fork into the pot and demand that whatever it brought up be given to Eli's sons. All the Israelites who came to worship at Shiloh were treated this way.

1Sam.2.15

Before they had even burned the fat to GOD, the priest's servant would interrupt whoever was sacrificing and say, "Hand over some of that meat for the priest to roast. He doesn't like boiled meat; he likes his rare."

1Sam.2.15

But even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast; he won't accept boiled meat from you, but only raw."

1Sam.2.15

Also, before they burned the fat, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, "Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw."

Sometimes the servant would come even before the animal's fat had been burned on the altar. He would demand raw meat before it had been boiled so that it could be used for roasting.

If the man objected, "First let the fat be burned--God's portion!-then take all you want," the servant would demand, "No, I want it now. If you won't give it, I'll take it."

1Sam.2.16

If the man said to him, "Let the fat be burned up first, and then take whatever you want," the servant would then answer, "No, hand it over now; if you don't, I'll take it by force."

1Sam.2.16

And if the man said to him, "They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires," he would then answer him, "No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force."

The man offering the sacrifice might reply, "Take as much as you want, but the fat must first be burned." Then the servant would demand, "No, give it to me now, or I'll take it by force."

It was a horrible sin these young servants were committing--and right in the presence of GOD!-desecrating the holy offerings to GOD.

This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD's sight, for they were treating the LORD's offering with contempt.

Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD, for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

So the sin of these young men was very serious in the LORD's sight, for they treated the LORD's offerings with contempt.

In the midst of all this, Samuel, a boy dressed in a priestly linen tunic, served GOD.

GOD was most especially kind to Hannah. She had three more sons and two daughters! The boy Samuel stayed at the sanctuary and grew up with GOD.

And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

By this time Eli was very old. He kept getting reports on how his sons were ripping off the people and sleeping with the women who helped out at the sanctuary.

Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

Now Eli was very old, but he was aware of what his sons were doing to the people of Israel. He knew, for instance, that his sons were seducing the young women who assisted at the entrance of the Tabernacle.

Eli took them to task: "What's going on here? Why are you doing these things? I hear story after story of your corrupt and evil carrying on.

So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours.

Eli said to them, "I have been hearing reports from the people about the wicked things you are doing. Why do you keep sinning?

Oh, my sons, this is not right! These are terrible reports I'm getting, stories spreading right and left among GOD's people!

No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear spreading among the LORD's people.

No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the LORD's people transgress.

You must stop, my sons! The reports I hear among the LORD's people are not good.

1Sam.2.25

If you sin against another person, there's help--God's help. But if you sin against GOD, who is around to help?" But they were far gone in disobedience and refused to listen to a thing their father said. So GOD, who was fed up with them, decreed their death.

If a man sins against another man, God may mediate for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" His sons, however, did not listen to their father's rebuke, for it was the LORD's will to put them to death.

If one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him?" Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, because the LORD desired to kill them.

But the boy Samuel was very much alive, growing up, blessed by GOD and popular with the people.

Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, "How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly."

Jesus answered, "I told you, but you don't believe. Everything I have done has been authorized by my Father, actions that speak louder than words.

Jesus said, "I have made a present to you from the Father of a great many good actions. For which of these acts do you stone me?"

but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"

Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"

Jesus said, "At my Father's direction I have done many things to help the people. For which one of these good deeds are you killing me?"

The Jews said, "We're not stoning you for anything good you did, but for what you said--this blasphemy of calling yourself God."

"We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."

Jesus said, "I'm only quoting your inspired Scriptures, where God said, "I tell you--you are gods.'

He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and stayed there.

Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here he stayed

And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.

A lot of people followed him over. They were saying, "John did no miracles, but everything he said about this man has come true."

And many followed him. "John didn't do miracles," they remarked to one another, "but all his predictions about this man have come true."
