True Beauty

As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion. (Proverbs 11:22)

Today's Devotion By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

Physical beauty without strength of character is like a robust coconut with a black content - it is worthless. As there is nothing great in the world but man, there is nothing truly great in man but character. Character fortified with the knowledge of Christ is the only charm which attracts favour with God and man (Proverbs 11:27). This is the true beauty, and it is internal, rather than external.

True beauty is tantamount to righteousness, but physical beauty without any relationship with God is wickedness against Him in scriptural parlance, as seen from our text. “A jewel of gold in a swine’s snout...” refers to a beautiful woman that is void of any moral sense and purity. Some women and ladies take to the streets nearly naked in the name of showcasing their beauty. Such beauty is vain and it is wickedness and abomination in the sight of God.

The eminent Apostle Peter enjoins: ”... giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off...” (2 Peter 1:5-9). These are indices of the true beauty. Other elements of the inner beauty are liberality and soul-winning. Liberality is the art of giving - giving to God and for the good of others (Proverbs 11:24-26). True beauty also attracts others to godliness and holiness in form of soul-winning (Proverbs 11 :30).

Jesus Christ is the Source of true beauty. He still transforms the worst of sinners to the best of saints if given a chance.

Beauty, without the fear of the Lord, is vain
