I, Paul, am a prisoner for the sake of Christ, here with my brother Timothy. I write this letter to you, Philemon, my good friend and companion in this work--

This letter is from Paul, in prison for preaching the Good News about Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. It is written to Philemon, our much loved co-worker,

because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.

because I keep hearing of your trust in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God's people.

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

And I keep praying that this faith we hold in common keeps showing up in the good things we do, and that people recognize Christ in all of it.

I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

You are generous because of your faith. And I am praying that you will really put your generosity to work, for in so doing you will come to an understanding of all the good things we can do for Christ.

For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

Friend, you have no idea how good your love makes me feel, doubly so when I see your hospitality to fellow believers.

In line with all this I have a favor to ask of you. As Christ's ambassador and now a prisoner for him, I wouldn't hesitate to command this if I thought it necessary,

That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do,

Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

but because of our love, I prefer just to ask you. So take this as a request from your friend Paul, an old man, now in prison for the sake of Christ Jesus.

I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

While here in jail, I've fathered a child, so to speak. And here he is, hand-carrying this letter--Onesimus!

My plea is that you show kindness to Onesimus. I think of him as my own son because he became a believer as a result of my ministry here in prison.

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
