Obadiah's Message to Edom from GOD, the Master. We got the news straight from GOD by a special messenger sent out to the godless nations: "On your feet, prepare for battle; get ready to make war on Edom! [JC]

The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Sovereign LORD says about Edom- We have heard a message from the LORD: An envoy was sent to the nations to say, "Rise, and let us go against her for battle"-

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom (We have heard a report from the LORD, And a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying, "Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle"):

Obad.1.1

This is the vision that the Sovereign LORD revealed to Obadiah concerning the land of Edom. We have heard a message from the LORD that an ambassador was sent to the nations to say, "Get ready, everyone! Let's assemble our armies and attack Edom!"

Obad.1.2

"Listen to this, Edom: I'm turning you to a no-account, the runt of the godless nations, despised.

Obad.1.2

"See, I will make you small among the nations; you will be utterly despised.

Obad.1.2

"Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You shall be greatly despised.

Obad.1.2

The LORD says, "I will cut you down to size among the nations, Edom; you will be small and despised.

Obad.1.3

You thought you were so great, perched high among the rocks, king of the mountain, Thinking to yourself, "Nobody can get to me! Nobody can touch me!'

Obad.1.3

The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, 'Who can bring me down to the ground?'

The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to the ground?'

Obad.1.3

You are proud because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. `Who can ever reach us way up here?' you ask boastfully. Don't fool yourselves!

Obad.1.4

Think again. Even if, like an eagle, you hang out on a high cliff-face, Even if you build your nest in the stars, I'll bring you down to earth." GOD's sure Word.

Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.

Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down," says the LORD.

Obad.1.4

Though you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Obad.1.5

"If thieves crept up on you, they'd rob you blind--isn't that so? If they mugged you on the streets at night, they'd pick you clean--isn't that so?

Obad.1.5

"If thieves came to you, if robbers in the night- Oh, what a disaster awaits you- would they not steal only as much as they wanted? If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave a few grapes?

"If thieves had come to you, If robbers by night-- Oh, how you will be cut off!-- Would they not have stolen till they had enough? If grape-gatherers had come to you, Would they not have left some gleanings?

"If thieves came at night and robbed you, they would not take everything. Those who harvest grapes always leave a few for the poor. But your enemies will wipe you out completely!

Oh, they'll take Esau apart, piece by piece, empty his purse and pockets.

But how Esau will be ransacked, his hidden treasures pillaged!

"Oh, how Esau shall be searched out! How his hidden treasures shall be sought after!

Obad.1.6

Every nook and cranny of Edom will be searched and looted. Every treasure will be found and taken.

Obad.1.7

All your old partners will drive you to the edge. Your old friends will lie to your face. Your old drinking buddies will stab you in the back. Your world will collapse. You won't know what hit you.

Obad.1.7

All your allies will force you to the border; your friends will deceive and overpower you; those who eat your bread will set a trap for you, but you will not detect it.

Obad.1.7

All the men in your confederacy Shall force you to the border; The men at peace with you Shall deceive you and prevail against you. Those who eat your bread shall lay a trap for you. No one is aware of it.

Obad.1.7

"All your allies will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your land. They will promise you peace, while plotting your destruction. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won't even know about it.

Obad.1.8

So don't be surprised"--it's GOD's sure Word!- "when I wipe out all sages from Edom and rid the Esau mountains of its famous wise men.

"In that day," declares the LORD, "will I not destroy the wise men of Edom, men of understanding in the mountains of Esau?

Obad.1.8

"Will I not in that day," says the LORD, "Even destroy the wise men from Edom, And understanding from the mountains of Esau?

Obad.1.8

At that time not a single wise person will be left in the whole land of Edom!" says the LORD. "For on the mountains of Edom I will destroy everyone who has wisdom and understanding.

Obad.1.9

Your great heroes will desert you, Teman. There'll be nobody left in Esau's mountains.

Obad.1.9

Your warriors, O Teman, will be terrified, and everyone in Esau's mountains will be cut down in the slaughter.

Obad.1.9

Then your mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, To the end that everyone from the mountains of Esau May be cut off by slaughter.

Obad.1.9

The mightiest warriors of Teman will be terrified, and everyone on the mountains of Edom will be cut down in the slaughter.

Obad.1.10

Because of the murderous history compiled against your brother Jacob, You will be looked down on by everyone. You'll lose your place in history.

Obad.1.10

Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.

Obad.1.10

"For violence against your brother Jacob, Shame shall cover you, And you shall be cut off forever.

Obad.1.10

"And why? Because of the violence you did to your close relatives in Israel. Now you will be destroyed completely and filled with shame forever.

Obad.1.11

On that day you stood there and didn't do anything. Strangers took your brother's army into exile. Godless foreigners invaded and pillaged Jerusalem. You stood there and watched. You were as bad as they were.

On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them.

Obad.1.11

In the day that you stood on the other side-- In the day that strangers carried captive his forces, When foreigners entered his gates And cast lots for Jerusalem-- Even you were as one of them.

Obad.1.11

For you deserted your relatives in Israel during their time of greatest need. You stood aloof, refusing to lift a finger to help when foreign invaders carried off their wealth and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem. You acted as though you were one of Israel's enemies.

Obad.1.12

You shouldn't have gloated over your brother when he was down-and-out. You shouldn't have laughed and joked at Judah's sons when they were facedown in the mud. You shouldn't have talked so big when everything was so bad.

Obad.1.12

You should not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.

"But you should not have gazed on the day of your brother In the day of his captivity; Nor should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah In the day of their destruction; Nor should you have spoken proudly In the day of distress.

"You shouldn't have done this! You shouldn't have gloated when they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You shouldn't have rejoiced because they were suffering such misfortune. You shouldn't have crowed over them as they suffered these disasters.

Obad.1.13

You shouldn't have taken advantage of my people when their lives had fallen apart. You of all people should not have been amused by their troubles, their wrecked nation. You shouldn't have taken the shirt off their back when they were knocked flat, defenseless.

Obad.1.13

You should not march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster, nor look down on them in their calamity in the day of their disaster, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster.

Obad.1.13

You should not have entered the gate of My people In the day of their calamity. Indeed, you should not have gazed on their affliction In the day of their calamity, Nor laid hands on their substance In the day of their calamity.

Obad.1.13

You shouldn't have plundered the land of Israel when they were suffering such calamity. You shouldn't have gloated over the destruction of your relatives, looting their homes and making yourselves rich at their expense.

Obad.1.14

And you shouldn't have stood waiting at the outskirts and cut off refugees, And traitorously turned in helpless survivors who had lost everything. [JC]

You should not wait at the crossroads to cut down their fugitives, nor hand over their survivors in the day of their trouble.

Obad.1.14

You should not have stood at the crossroads To cut off those among them who escaped; Nor should you have delivered up those among them who remained In the day of distress.

Obad.1.14

You shouldn't have stood at the crossroads, killing those who tried to escape. You shouldn't have captured the survivors, handing them over to their enemies in that terrible time of trouble.

Obad.1.15

"GOD's Judgment Day is near for all the godless nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. What you did will boomerang back and hit your own head.

"The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.

Obad.1.15

"For the day of the LORD upon all the nations is near; As you have done, it shall be done to you; Your reprisal shall return upon your own head.

Obad.1.15

"The day is near when I, the LORD, will judge the godless nations! As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you. All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads.

Obad.1.16

Just as you partied on my holy mountain, all the godless nations will drink God's wrath. They'll drink and drink and drink--they'll drink themselves to death.

Obad.1.16

Just as you drank on my holy hill, so all the nations will drink continually; they will drink and drink and be as if they had never been.

Obad.1.16

For as you drank on My holy mountain, So shall all the nations drink continually; Yes, they shall drink, and swallow, And they shall be as though they had never been.

Obad.1.16

Just as you swallowed up my people on my holy mountain, so you and the surrounding nations will swallow the punishment I pour out on you. Yes, you nations will drink and stagger and disappear from history, as though you had never even existed.

Obad.1.17

But not so on Mount Zion--there's respite there! a safe and holy place! The family of Jacob will take back their possessions from those who took them from them.

But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will possess its inheritance.

Obad.1.17

"But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, And there shall be holiness; The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

Obad.1.17

"But Jerusalem will become a refuge for those who escape; it will be a holy place. And the people of Israel will come back to reclaim their inheritance.

Obad.1.18

That's when the family of Jacob will catch fire, the family of Joseph become fierce flame, while the family of Esau will be straw. Esau will go up in flames, nothing left of Esau but a pile of ashes." GOD said it, and it is so. [JC]

Obad.1.18

The house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame; the house of Esau will be stubble, and they will set it on fire and consume it. There will be no survivors from the house of Esau." The LORD has spoken.

Obad.1.18

The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau," For the LORD has spoken.

Obad.1.18

At that time Israel will be a raging fire, and Edom, a field of dry stubble. The fire will roar across the field, devouring everything and leaving no survivors in Edom. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Obad.1.19

People from the south will take over the Esau mountains; people from the foothills will overrun the Philistines. They'll take the farms of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will take Gilead.

Obad.1.19

People from the Negev will occupy the mountains of Esau, and people from the foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.

Obad.1.19

The South shall possess the mountains of Esau, And the Lowland shall possess Philistia. They shall possess the fields of Ephraim And the fields of Samaria. Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

Obad.1.19

"Then my people living in the Negev will occupy the mountains of Edom. Those living in the foothills of Judah will possess the Philistine plains and take over the fields of Ephraim and Samaria. And the people of Benjamin will occupy the land of Gilead.

Obad.1.20

Earlier, Israelite exiles will come back and take Canaanite land to the north at Zarephath. Jerusalem exiles from the far northwest in Sepharad will come back and take the cities in the south.

Obad.1.20

This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan will possess the land as far as Zarephath; the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the towns of the Negev.

Obad.1.20

And the captives of this host of the children of Israel Shall possess the land of the Canaanites As far as Zarephath. The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Shall possess the cities of the South.

Obad.1.20

The exiles of Israel will return to their land and occupy the Phoenician coast as far north as Zarephath. The captives from Jerusalem exiled in the north will return to their homeland and resettle the villages of the Negev.

Obad.1.21

The remnant of the saved in Mount Zion will go into the mountains of Esau And rule justly and fairly, a rule that honors GOD's kingdom.

Obad.1.21

Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the LORD's.

Obad.1.21

Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion To judge the mountains of Esau, And the kingdom shall be the LORD's.

Obad.1.21

Deliverers will go up to Mount Zion in Jerusalem to rule over the mountains of Edom. And the LORD himself will be king!"
