Then GOD spoke to Moses on the Plains of Moab at Jordan-Jericho:

On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, the LORD said to Moses,

And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, saying:

Num.35.1

While Israel was camped beside the Jordan on the plains of Moab, across from Jericho, the LORD said to Moses,

Num.35.2

"Command the People of Israel to give the Levites as their part of the total inheritance towns to live in. Make sure there is plenty of pasture around the towns.

Num.35.2

"Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands around the towns.

Num.35.2

"Command the children of Israel that they give the Levites cities to dwell in from the inheritance of their possession, and you shall also give the Levites common-land around the cities.

Num.35.2

"Instruct the people of Israel to give to the Levites from their property certain towns to live in, along with the surrounding pasturelands.

Num.35.3

Then they will be well taken care of with towns to live in and pastures for their cattle, flocks, and other livestock.

Num.35.3

Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for their cattle, flocks and all their other livestock.

Num.35.3

They shall have the cities to dwell in; and their common-land shall be for their cattle, for their herds, and for all their animals.

Num.35.3

These towns will be their homes, and the surrounding lands will provide pasture for their cattle, flocks, and other livestock.

Num.35.4

"The pasture surrounding the Levites' towns is to extend 1,500 feet in each direction from the city wall.

"The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend out fifteen hundred feet from the town wall.

Num.35.4

The common-land of the cities which you will give the Levites shall extend from the wall of the city outward a thousand cubits all around.

Num.35.4

The pastureland assigned to the Levites around these towns will extend 1,500 feet from the town walls in every direction.

Num.35.5

The outside borders of the pasture are to measure three thousand feet on each of the four sides--east, south, west, and north--with the town at the center. Each city will be supplied with pasture.

Num.35.5

Outside the town, measure three thousand feet on the east side, three thousand on the south side, three thousand on the west and three thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns.

Num.35.5

And you shall measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, on the south side two thousand cubits, on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits. The city shall be in the middle. This shall belong to them as common-land for the cities.

Num.35.5

Measure off 3,000 feet outside the town walls in every direction--east, south, west, north--with the town at the center. This area will serve as the larger pastureland for the towns.

Num.35.6

"Six of these towns that you give the Levites will be asylum-cities to which anyone who accidentally kills another person may flee for asylum. In addition, you will give them forty-two other towns--

"Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns.

"Now among the cities which you will give to the Levites you shall appoint six cities of refuge, to which a manslayer may flee. And to these you shall add forty-two cities.

"You must give the Levites six cities of refuge, where a person who has accidentally killed someone can flee for safety. In addition, give them forty-two other towns.

Num.35.7

forty-eight towns in all, together with their pastures.

In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands.

So all the cities you will give to the Levites shall be forty-eight; these you shall give with their common-land.

In all, forty-eight towns with the surrounding pastureland will be given to the Levites.

The towns that you give the Levites from the common inheritance of the People of Israel are to be taken in proportion to the size of each tribe--many towns from a tribe that has many, few from a tribe that has few."

Num.35.8

The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few."

Num.35.8

And the cities which you will give shall be from the possession of the children of Israel; from the larger tribe you shall give many, from the smaller you shall give few. Each shall give some of its cities to the Levites, in proportion to the inheritance that each receives."

Num.35.8

These towns will come from the property of the people of Israel. The larger tribes will give more towns to the Levites, while the smaller tribes will give fewer. Each tribe will give in proportion to its inheritance."

GOD spoke to Moses:

"Speak to the People of Israel. Tell them, When you cross the River Jordan into the country of Canaan,

"Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: "When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

Num.35.10

"Say this to the people of Israel: `When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan,

designate your asylum-cities, towns to which a person who accidentally kills someone can flee for asylum.

Num.35.11

select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee.

Num.35.11

then you shall appoint cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person accidentally may flee there.

Num.35.11

designate cities of refuge for people to flee to if they have killed someone accidentally.

Num.35.12

They will be places of refuge from the avenger so that the alleged murderer won't be killed until he can appear before the community in court.

Num.35.12

They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that a person accused of murder may not die before he stands trial before the assembly.

They shall be cities of refuge for you from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation in judgment.

These cities will be places of protection from a dead person's relatives who want to avenge the death. The slayer must not be killed before being tried by the community.

Num.35.13

Provide six asylum-cities.

Num.35.13

These six towns you give will be your cities of refuge.

Num.35.13

And of the cities which you give, you shall have six cities of refuge.

Designate six cities of refuge for yourselves,

Designate three of the towns to the east side of the Jordan, the other three in Canaan proper--asylum-cities

Give three on this side of the Jordan and three in Canaan as cities of refuge.

You shall appoint three cities on this side of the Jordan, and three cities you shall appoint in the land of Canaan, which will be cities of refuge.

for the People of Israel, for the foreigner, and for any occasional visitors or guests--six asylum-cities to run to for anyone who accidentally kills another.

These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites, aliens and any other people living among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there.

These six cities shall be for refuge for the children of Israel, for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them, that anyone who kills a person accidentally may flee there.

These cities are for the protection of Israelites, resident foreigners, and traveling merchants. Anyone who accidentally kills someone may flee there for safety.

"But if the killer has used an iron object, that's just plain murder; he's obviously a murderer and must be put to death.

"'If a man strikes someone with an iron object so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.

Num.35.16

"But if he strikes him with an iron implement, so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

Num.35.16

" `But if someone strikes and kills another person with a piece of iron, it must be presumed to be murder, and the murderer must be executed.

Num.35.17

"Or if he has a rock in his hand big enough to kill and the man dies, that's murder; he's a murderer and must be put to death.

Num.35.17

Or if anyone has a stone in his hand that could kill, and he strikes someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.

Num.35.17

And if he strikes him with a stone in the hand, by which one could die, and he does die, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

Or if someone strikes and kills another person with a large stone, it is murder, and the murderer must be executed.

Num.35.18

"Or if he's carrying a wooden club heavy enough to kill and the man dies, that's murder; he's a murderer and must be put to death.

Num.35.18

Or if anyone has a wooden object in his hand that could kill, and he hits someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.

Num.35.18

Or if he strikes him with a wooden hand weapon, by which one could die, and he does die, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

Num.35.18

The same is true if someone strikes and kills another person with a wooden weapon. It must be presumed to be murder, and the murderer must be executed.

Num.35.19

"In such cases the avenger has a right to kill the murderer when he meets him--he can kill him on the spot.

Num.35.19

The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

Num.35.19

The avenger of blood himself shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

Num.35.19

The victim's nearest relative is responsible for putting the murderer to death. When they meet, the avenger must execute the murderer.

Num.35.20

"And if out of sheer hatred a man pushes another or from ambush throws something at him and he dies,

If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at him intentionally so that he dies

Num.35.20

If he pushes him out of hatred or, while lying in wait, hurls something at him so that he dies,

Num.35.20

So if in premeditated hostility someone pushes another person or throws a dangerous object and the person dies, it is murder.

Num.35.21

or angrily hits him with his fist and kills him, that's murder--he must be put to death. The avenger has a right to kill him when he gets him.

or if in hostility he hits him with his fist so that he dies, that person shall be put to death; he is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

or in enmity he strikes him with his hand so that he dies, the one who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

Or if someone angrily hits another person with a fist and the person dies, it is murder. In such cases, the victim's nearest relative must execute the murderer when they meet.

"If, however, he impulsively pushes someone and there is no history of hard feelings, or he impetuously picks up something and throws it,

"'But if without hostility someone suddenly shoves another or throws something at him unintentionally

Num.35.22

"However, if he pushes him suddenly without enmity, or throws anything at him without lying in wait,

Num.35.22

" `But suppose someone pushes another person without premeditated hostility, or throws something that unintentionally hits another person,

Num.35.23

or he accidentally drops a stone tool--a maul or hammer, say--and it hits and kills someone he didn't even know was there, and there's no suspicion that there was bad blood between them,

Num.35.23

or, without seeing him, drops a stone on him that could kill him, and he dies, then since he was not his enemy and he did not intend to harm him,

Num.35.23

or uses a stone, by which a man could die, throwing it at him without seeing him, so that he dies, while he was not his enemy or seeking his harm,

Num.35.23

or accidentally drops a stone on someone, though they were not enemies, and the person dies.

Num.35.24

the community is to judge between the killer and the avenger following these guidelines.

Num.35.24

the assembly must judge between him and the avenger of blood according to these regulations.

Num.35.24

then the congregation shall judge between the manslayer and the avenger of blood according to these judgments.

Num.35.24

If this should happen, the assembly must follow these regulations in making a judgment between the slayer and the avenger, the victim's nearest relative.

Num.35.25

It's the task of the community to save the killer from the hand of the avenger--the community is to return him to his asylum-city to which he fled. He must stay there until the death of the High Priest who was anointed with the holy oil.

The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send him back to the city of refuge to which he fled. He must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.

Num.35.25

So the congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall return him to the city of refuge where he had fled, and he shall remain there until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.

They must protect the slayer from the avenger, and they must send the slayer back to live in a city of refuge until the death of the high priest.

Num.35.26

But if the murderer leaves the asylum-city to which he has fled,

"'But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which he has fled

But if the manslayer at any time goes outside the limits of the city of refuge where he fled,

Num.35.26

" `But if the slayer leaves the city of refuge,

Num.35.27

and the avenger finds him outside the borders of his asylum-city, the avenger has a right to kill the murderer. And he's not considered guilty of murder.

Num.35.27

and the avenger of blood finds him outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder.

Num.35.27

and the avenger of blood finds him outside the limits of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood,

Num.35.27

and the victim's nearest relative finds him outside the city limits and kills him, it will not be considered murder.

Num.35.28

"So it's important that he stay in his asylum-city until the death of the High Priest. After the death of the High Priest he is free to return to his own place. [JC]

The accused must stay in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may he return to his own property.

because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.

"These are the procedures for making judgments from now on, wherever you live.

"'These are to be legal requirements for you throughout the generations to come, wherever you live.

"And these things shall be a statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

These are permanent laws for you to observe from generation to generation, wherever you may live.

Num.35.30

"Anyone who kills another may be executed only on the testimony of eyewitnesses. But no one can be executed on the testimony of only one witness.

"'Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

Num.35.30

Whoever kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness is not sufficient testimony against a person for the death penalty.

Num.35.30

" `All murderers must be executed, but only if there is more than one witness. No one may be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

Num.35.31

"Don't accept bribe money in exchange for the life of a murderer. He's guilty and deserves the death penalty. Put him to death.

Num.35.31

"'Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. He must surely be put to death.

Num.35.31

Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death.

Num.35.31

Also, you must never accept a ransom payment for the life of someone judged guilty of murder and subject to execution; murderers must always be put to death.

Num.35.32

"And don't accept bribe money for anyone who has fled to an asylum-city so as to permit him to go back and live in his own place before the death of the High Priest.

Num.35.32

"'Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow him to go back and live on his own land before the death of the high priest.

Num.35.32

And you shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the priest.

Num.35.32

And never accept a ransom payment from someone who has fled to a city of refuge, allowing the slayer to return to his property before the death of the high priest.

Num.35.33

"Don't pollute the land in which you live. Murder pollutes the land. The land can't be cleaned up of the blood of murder except through the blood of the murderer.

Num.35.33

"'Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it.

Num.35.33

So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.

Num.35.33

This will ensure that the land where you live will not be polluted, for murder pollutes the land. And no atonement can be made for murder except by the execution of the murderer.

Num.35.34

"Don't desecrate the land in which you live. I live here too--I, GOD, live in the same neighborhood with the People of Israel."

Num.35.34

Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.'"

Num.35.34

Therefore do not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel."'

Num.35.34

You must not defile the land where you are going to live, for I live there myself. I am the LORD, who lives among the people of Israel.'"

Num.36.1

The heads of the ancestral clan of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh--they were from the clans of the descendants of Joseph--approached Moses and the leaders who were heads of the families in the People of Israel.

Num.36.1

The family heads of the clan of Gilead son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, who were from the clans of the descendants of Joseph, came and spoke before Moses and the leaders, the heads of the Israelite families.

Num.36.1

Now the chief fathers of the families of the children of Gilead the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the chief fathers of the children of Israel.

Num.36.1

Then the heads of the clan of Gilead--descendants of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph--came to Moses and the family leaders of Israel with a petition.

Num.36.2

They said, "When GOD commanded my master to hand over the inheritance-lands by lot to the People of Israel, my master was also commanded by GOD to hand over the inheritance-land of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

Num.36.2

They said, "When the LORD commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites by lot, he ordered you to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

Num.36.2

And they said: "The LORD commanded my lord Moses to give the land as an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel, and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

Num.36.2

They said, "Sir, the LORD instructed you to divide the land by sacred lot among the people of Israel. You were told by the LORD to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

Num.36.3

But what happens if they marry into another tribe in the People of Israel? Their inheritance-land will be taken out of our ancestral tribe and get added into the tribe into which they married.

Num.36.3

Now suppose they marry men from other Israelite tribes; then their inheritance will be taken from our ancestral inheritance and added to that of the tribe they marry into. And so part of the inheritance allotted to us will be taken away.

Num.36.3

Now if they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry; so it will be taken from the lot of our inheritance.

Num.36.3

But if any of them marries a man from another tribe, their inheritance of land will go with them to the tribe into which they marry. In this way, the total area of our tribal land will be reduced.

Num.36.4

And then when the Year of Jubilee comes for the People of Israel their inheritance will be lumped in with the inheritance of the tribe into which they married--their land will be removed from our ancestors' inheritance!"

Num.36.4

When the Year of Jubilee for the Israelites comes, their inheritance will be added to that of the tribe into which they marry, and their property will be taken from the tribal inheritance of our forefathers."

Num.36.4

And when the Jubilee of the children of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry; so their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers."

Num.36.4

Then when the Year of Jubilee comes, their inheritance of land will be added to that of the new tribe, causing it to be lost forever to our ancestral tribe."

Num.36.5

Moses, at GOD's command, issued this order to the People of Israel: "What the tribe of the sons of Joseph says is right.

Num.36.5

Then at the LORD's command Moses gave this order to the Israelites: "What the tribe of the descendants of Joseph is saying is right.

Num.36.5

Then Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying: "What the tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks is right.

Num.36.5

So Moses gave the Israelites this command from the LORD: "The men of the tribe of Joseph are right.

Num.36.6

This is GOD's command to Zelophehad's daughters: They are free to marry anyone they choose as long as they marry within their ancestral clan.

Num.36.6

This is what the LORD commands for Zelophehad's daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within the tribal clan of their father.

Num.36.6

This is what the LORD commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, "Let them marry whom they think best, but they may marry only within the family of their father's tribe.'

Num.36.6

This is what the LORD commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: Let them marry anyone they like, as long as it is within their own ancestral tribe.

Num.36.7

The inheritance-land of the People of Israel must not get passed around from tribe to tribe. No, keep the tribal inheritance-land in the family.

Num.36.7

No inheritance in Israel is to pass from tribe to tribe, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal land inherited from his forefathers.

Num.36.7

So the inheritance of the children of Israel shall not change hands from tribe to tribe, for every one of the children of Israel shall keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

Num.36.7

None of the inherited land may pass from tribe to tribe, for the inheritance of every tribe must remain fixed as it was first allotted.

Num.36.8

Every daughter who inherits land, regardless of the tribe she is in, must marry a man from within her father's tribal clan. Every Israelite is responsible for making sure the inheritance stays within the ancestral tribe.

Num.36.8

Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must marry someone in her father's tribal clan, so that every Israelite will possess the inheritance of his fathers.

Num.36.8

And every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be the wife of one of the family of her father's tribe, so that the children of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers.

Num.36.8

The daughters throughout the tribes of Israel who are in line to inherit property must marry within their tribe, so that all the Israelites will keep their ancestral property.

Num.36.9

No inheritance-land may be passed from tribe to tribe; each tribe of the People of Israel must hold tight to its own land."

No inheritance may pass from tribe to tribe, for each Israelite tribe is to keep the land it inherits."

Num.36.9

Thus no inheritance shall change hands from one tribe to another, but every tribe of the children of Israel shall keep its own inheritance."

Num.36.10

Zelophehad's daughters did just as GOD commanded Moses.

So Zelophehad's daughters did as the LORD commanded Moses.

Num.36.10

Just as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad;

Num.36.10

The daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD commanded Moses.

Num.36.11

Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, Zelophehad's daughters, all married their cousins on their father's side.

Num.36.11

Zelophehad's daughters-Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah-married their cousins on their father's side.

Num.36.11

for Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to the sons of their father's brothers.

Num.36.11

Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah all married cousins on their father's side.

Num.36.12

They married within the families of Manasseh son of Joseph and their inheritance-lands stayed in their father's family.

Num.36.12

They married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in their father's clan and tribe.

They were married into the families of the children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father's family.

They married into the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. Thus, their inheritance of land remained within their ancestral tribe.
