By now Balaam realized that GOD wanted to bless Israel. So he didn't work in any sorcery as he had done earlier. He turned and looked out over the wilderness.

Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as at other times, but turned his face toward the desert.

As Balaam looked, he saw Israel camped tribe by tribe. The Spirit of God came on him,

Israel crouches like a lion and naps, king-of-the-beasts--who dares disturb him? Whoever blesses you is blessed, whoever curses you is cursed.

Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness-who dares to rouse them? "May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!"

Balak lost his temper with Balaam. He shook his fist. He said to Balaam: "I got you in here to curse my enemies and what have you done? Blessed them! Blessed them three times!

Then Balak's anger burned against Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to him, "I summoned you to curse my enemies, but you have blessed them these three times.

Then Balak's anger was aroused against Balaam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, "I called you to curse my enemies, and look, you have bountifully blessed them these three times!

King Balak flew into a rage against Balaam. He angrily clapped his hands and shouted, "I called you to curse my enemies! Instead, you have blessed them three times.

Get out of here! Go home! I told you I would pay you well, but you're getting nothing. You can blame GOD."

Now leave at once and go home! I said I would reward you handsomely, but the LORD has kept you from being rewarded."

Now therefore, flee to your place. I said I would greatly honor you, but in fact, the LORD has kept you back from honor."

Now get out of here! Go back home! I had planned to reward you richly, but the LORD has kept you from your reward."

Balaam said to Balak, "Didn't I tell you up front when you sent your emissaries,

Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,

So Balaam said to Balak, "Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,

Balaam told Balak, "Don't you remember what I told your messengers? I said,

Num.24.13

"Even if Balak gave me his palace stuffed with silver and gold, I couldn't do anything on my own, whether good or bad, that went against GOD's command'?

Num.24.13

'Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD -and I must say only what the LORD says'?

Num.24.13

"If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD, to do good or bad of my own will. What the LORD says, that I must speak'?

Num.24.13

`Even if Balak were to give me a palace filled with silver and gold, I am powerless to do anything against the will of the LORD.' I told you that I could say only what the LORD says!

Num.24.14

I'm leaving for home and my people, but I warn you of what this people will do to your people in the days to come."

Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come."

And now, indeed, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the latter days."

Now I am returning to my own people. But first let me tell you what the Israelites will do to your people in the future."

"I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth.

I see him, but not in the present time. I perceive him, but far in the distant future. A star will rise from Jacob; a scepter will emerge from Israel. It will crush the foreheads of Moab's people, cracking the skulls of the people of Sheth.

I see Edom sold off at auction, enemy Seir marked down at the flea market, while Israel walks off with the trophies.

Edom will be conquered; Seir, his enemy, will be conquered, but Israel will grow strong.

"And Edom shall be a possession; Seir also, his enemies, shall be a possession, While Israel does valiantly.

Edom will be taken over, and Seir, its enemy, will be conquered, while Israel continues on in triumph.

Num.24.19

A ruler is coming from Jacob who'll destroy what's left in the city. [JC]

A ruler will come out of Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city."

Out of Jacob One shall have dominion, And destroy the remains of the city."

A ruler will rise in Jacob who will destroy the survivors of Ir."

Then Balaam spotted Amalek and delivered an oracle-message. He said, Amalek, you're in first place among nations right now, but you're going to come in last, ruined. [JC]

Then Balaam saw Amalek and uttered his oracle: "Amalek was first among the nations, but he will come to ruin at last."

Then he looked on Amalek, and he took up his oracle and said: "Amalek was first among the nations, But shall be last until he perishes."

Then Balaam looked over at the people of Amalek and delivered this prophecy: "Amalek was the greatest of nations, but its destiny is destruction!"

He saw the Kenites and delivered his oracle-message to them: Your home is in a nice secure place, like a nest high on the face of a cliff.

Then he saw the Kenites and uttered his oracle: "Your dwelling place is secure, your nest is set in a rock;

Then he looked on the Kenites, and he took up his oracle and said: "Firm is your dwelling place, And your nest is set in the rock;

Then he looked over at the Kenites and prophesied: "You are strongly situated; your nest is set in the rocks.

Still, you Kenites will look stupid when Asshur takes you prisoner. [JC]

yet you Kenites will be destroyed when Asshur takes you captive."

Nevertheless Kain shall be burned. How long until Asshur carries you away captive?"

But the Kenites will be destroyed when Assyria takes you captive."

Balaam spoke his final oracle-message: Doom! Who stands a chance when God starts in?

Then he uttered his oracle: "Ah, who can live when God does this?

Num.24.23

Then he took up his oracle and said: "Alas! Who shall live when God does this?

Num.24.23

Balaam concluded his prophecies by saying: "Alas, who can survive when God does this?

Num.24.24

Sea-Peoples, raiders from across the sea, will harass Asshur and Eber, But they'll also come to nothing, just like all the rest.

Num.24.24

Ships will come from the shores of Kittim; they will subdue Asshur and Eber, but they too will come to ruin."

Num.24.24

But ships shall come from the coasts of Cyprus, And they shall afflict Asshur and afflict Eber, And so shall Amalek, until he perishes."

Num.24.24

Ships will come from the coasts of Cyprus; they will oppress both Assyria and Eber, but they, too, will be utterly destroyed."

Balaam got up and went home. Balak also went on his way.

So Balaam rose and departed and returned to his place; Balak also went his way.

Then Balaam and Balak returned to their homes.

While Israel was camped at Shittim (Acacia Grove), the men began to have sex with the Moabite women.

While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women,

Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.

While the Israelites were camped at Acacia, some of the men defiled themselves by sleeping with the local Moabite women.

It started when the women invited the men to their sex-and-religion worship. They ate together and then worshiped their gods.

These women invited them to attend sacrifices to their gods, and soon the Israelites were feasting with them and worshiping the gods of Moab.

Israel ended up joining in the worship of the Baal of Peor. GOD was furious, his anger blazing out against Israel.

So Israel joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor. And the LORD's anger burned against them.

So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel.

Before long Israel was joining in the worship of Baal of Peor, causing the LORD's anger to blaze against his people.

Num.25.4

GOD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of Israel and kill them by hanging, leaving them publicly exposed in order to turn GOD's anger away from Israel."

The LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD's fierce anger may turn away from Israel."

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the LORD, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel."

The LORD issued the following command to Moses: "Seize all the ringleaders and execute them before the LORD in broad daylight, so his fierce anger will turn away from the people of Israel."

Moses issued orders to the judges of Israel: "Each of you must execute the men under your jurisdiction who joined in the worship of Baal Peor."

So Moses said to Israel's judges, "Each of you must put to death those of your men who have joined in worshiping the Baal of Peor."

So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor."

So Moses ordered Israel's judges to execute everyone who had joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.

Just then, while everyone was weeping in penitence at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, an Israelite man, flaunting his behavior in front of Moses and the whole assembly, paraded a Midianite woman into his family tent.

Then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into the camp, right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as they were weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.

Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw what he was doing, grabbed his spear,

Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand;

When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. Then he took a spear

and followed them into the tent. With one thrust he drove the spear through the two of them, the man of Israel and the woman, right through their private parts. That stopped the plague from continuing among the People of Israel.

"Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites; for he was as zealous as I am for my honor among them, so that in my zeal I did not put an end to them.

"Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal.

"Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest has turned my anger away from the Israelites by displaying passionate zeal among them on my behalf. So I have stopped destroying all Israel as I had intended to do in my anger.

So tell him that I am making a Covenant-of-Peace with him.

Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him.

Therefore say, "Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace;

He and his descendants are joined in a covenant of eternal priesthood, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the People of Israel."

Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk to those around him! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

They all realized they were in a place of holy mystery, that God was at work among them. They were quietly worshipful--and then noisily grateful, calling out among themselves, "God is back, looking to the needs of his people!"

The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,

In the next two or three hours Jesus healed many from diseases, distress, and evil spirits. To many of the blind he gave the gift of sight.

Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

After John's messengers left to make their report, Jesus said more about John to the crowd of people. "What did you expect when you went out to see him in the wild? A weekend camper?

After they left, Jesus talked to the crowd about John. "Who is this man in the wilderness that you went out to see? Did you find him weak as a reed, moved by every breath of wind?

Hardly. What then? A sheik in silk pajamas? Not in the wilderness, not by a long shot.

If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.

But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts.

Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces, not in the wilderness.

What then? A messenger from God? That's right, a messenger! Probably the greatest messenger you'll ever hear.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

"Let me lay it out for you as plainly as I can: No one in history surpasses John the Baptizer, but in the kingdom he prepared you for, the lowliest person is ahead of him.
