GOD spoke to Moses and Aaron:

Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

"This is the rule from the Revelation that GOD commands: Tell the People of Israel to get a red cow, a healthy specimen, ritually clean, that has never been in harness.

Num.19.2

"This is a requirement of the law that the LORD has commanded: Tell the Israelites to bring you a red heifer without defect or blemish and that has never been under a yoke.

Num.19.2

"This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD has commanded, saying: "Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring you a red heifer without blemish, in which there is no defect and on which a yoke has never come.

Num.19.2

"Here is another ritual law required by the LORD: Tell the people of Israel to bring you a red heifer that has no physical defects and has never been yoked to a plow.

Num.19.3

Present it to Eleazar the priest, then take it outside the camp and butcher it while he looks on.

Num.19.3

Give it to Eleazar the priest; it is to be taken outside the camp and slaughtered in his presence.

The priest then will take a stick of cedar, some sprigs of hyssop, and a piece of scarlet material and throw them on the burning cow.

Afterwards the priest must wash his clothes and bathe well with water. He can then come into the camp but he remains ritually unclean until evening.

"Then a man who is ritually clean will gather the ashes of the cow and place them in a ritually clean place outside the camp. The congregation of Israel will keep them to use in the Water-of-Cleansing, an Absolution-Offering.

"A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and put them in a ceremonially clean place outside the camp. They shall be kept by the Israelite community for use in the water of cleansing; it is for purification from sin.

Then someone who is ceremonially clean will gather up the ashes of the heifer and place them in a purified place outside the camp. They will be kept there for the people of Israel to use in the water for the purification ceremony. This ceremony is performed for the removal of sin.

"The man who gathered up the ashes must scrub his clothes; he is ritually unclean until evening. This is to be a standing rule for both native-born Israelites and foreigners living among them.

The man who gathers up the ashes of the heifer must also wash his clothes, and he too will be unclean till evening. This will be a lasting ordinance both for the Israelites and for the aliens living among them.

And the one who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until evening. It shall be a statute forever to the children of Israel and to the stranger who dwells among them.

The man who gathers up the ashes of the heifer must also wash his clothes, and he will remain ceremonially unclean until evening. This is a permanent law for the people of Israel and any foreigners who live among them.

"Anyone who touches a dead body is ritually unclean for seven days.

He must purify himself with the Water-of-Cleansing on the third day; on the seventh day he will be clean. But if he doesn't follow the procedures for the third and seventh days, he won't be clean.

Anyone who touches the dead body of anyone and doesn't get cleansed desecrates GOD's Dwelling and is to be excommunicated. For as long as the Water-of-Cleansing has not been sprinkled on him, he remains ritually unclean.

Whoever touches the dead body of anyone and fails to purify himself defiles the LORD's tabernacle. That person must be cut off from Israel. Because the water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on him, he is unclean; his uncleanness remains on him.

Whoever touches the body of anyone who has died, and does not purify himself, defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person shall be cut off from Israel. He shall be unclean, because the water of purification was not sprinkled on him; his uncleanness is still on him.

All those who touch a dead body and do not purify themselves in the proper way defile the LORD's Tabernacle and will be cut off from the community of Israel. Since the water of purification was not sprinkled on them, their defilement continues.

"This is the rule for someone who dies in his tent: Anyone who enters the tent or is already in the tent is ritually unclean for seven days,

"This is the law that applies when a person dies in a tent: Anyone who enters the tent and anyone who is in it will be unclean for seven days,

"This is the law when a man dies in a tent: All who come into the tent and all who are in the tent shall be unclean seven days;

"This is the ritual law that applies when someone dies in a tent: Those who enter that tent, and those who were inside when the death occurred, will be ceremonially unclean for seven days.

and every open container without a lid is unclean.

and every open vessel, which has no cover fastened on it, is unclean.

Any container in the tent that was not covered with a lid is also defiled.

"Anyone out in the open field who touches a corpse, whether dead from violent or natural causes, or a human bone or a grave is unclean for seven days.

"Anyone out in the open who touches someone who has been killed with a sword or someone who has died a natural death, or anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.

Whoever in the open field touches one who is slain by a sword or who has died, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.

And if someone outdoors touches the corpse of someone who was killed with a sword or who died a natural death, or if someone touches a human bone or a grave, that person will be unclean for seven days.

For this unclean person, take some ashes from the burned Absolution-Offering and add some fresh water to it in a bowl.

"For the unclean person, put some ashes from the burned purification offering into a jar and pour fresh water over them.

"And for an unclean person they shall take some of the ashes of the heifer burnt for purification from sin, and running water shall be put on them in a vessel.

"To remove the defilement, put some of the ashes from the burnt purification offering in a jar and pour fresh water over them.

Find a ritually clean man to dip a sprig of hyssop into the water and sprinkle the tent and all its furnishings, the persons who were in the tent, the one who touched the bones of the person who was killed or died a natural death, and whoever may have touched a grave.

Then a man who is ceremonially clean is to take some hyssop, dip it in the water and sprinkle the tent and all the furnishings and the people who were there. He must also sprinkle anyone who has touched a human bone or a grave or someone who has been killed or someone who has died a natural death.

A clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water, sprinkle it on the tent, on all the vessels, on the persons who were there, or on the one who touched a bone, the slain, the dead, or a grave.

Then someone who is ceremonially clean must take a hyssop branch and dip it into the water. That person must sprinkle the water on the tent, on all the furnishings in the tent, and on anyone who was in the tent, or anyone who has touched a human bone, or has touched a person who was killed or who died naturally, or has touched a grave.

Then he is to sprinkle the unclean person on the third and seventh days. On the seventh day he is considered cleansed. The cleansed person must then scrub his clothes and take a bath; by evening he is clean.

On the third and seventh days the ceremonially clean person must sprinkle the water on those who are unclean. Then on the seventh day the people being cleansed must wash their clothes and bathe themselves, and that evening they will be cleansed of their defilement.

But if an unclean person does not go through these cleansing procedures, he must be excommunicated from the community; he has desecrated the Sanctuary of GOD. The Water-of-Cleansing has not been sprinkled on him and he is ritually unclean.

But if a person who is unclean does not purify himself, he must be cut off from the community, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of cleansing has not been sprinkled on him, and he is unclean.

"But the man who is unclean and does not purify himself, that person shall be cut off from among the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. The water of purification has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean.

"But those who become defiled and do not purify themselves will be cut off from the community, for they have defiled the sanctuary of the LORD. Since the water of purification has not been sprinkled on them, they remain defiled.

Num.19.21

This is the standing rule for these cases. "The man who sprinkles the Water-of-Cleansing has to scrub his clothes; anyone else who touched the Water-of-Cleansing is also ritually unclean until evening.

This is a lasting ordinance for them. "The man who sprinkles the water of cleansing must also wash his clothes, and anyone who touches the water of cleansing will be unclean till evening.

It shall be a perpetual statute for them. He who sprinkles the water of purification shall wash his clothes; and he who touches the water of purification shall be unclean until evening.

This is a permanent law. Those who sprinkle the water of purification must afterward wash their clothes, and anyone who touches the water of purification will remain defiled until evening.

"Anything the ritually unclean man touches becomes unclean, and the person who touches what he touched is unclean until evening."

Num.20.1

In the first month, the entire company of the People of Israel arrived in the Wilderness of Zin. The people stayed in Kadesh. Miriam died there, and she was buried.

In the first month the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.

Num.20.1

Then the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the Wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh; and Miriam died there and was buried there.

Num.20.1

In early spring the people of Israel arrived in the wilderness of Zin and camped at Kadesh. While they were there, Miriam died and was buried.

Num.20.2

There was no water there for the community, so they ganged up on Moses and Aaron.

Num.20.2

Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.

Num.20.2

Now there was no water for the congregation; so they gathered together against Moses and Aaron.

Num.20.2

There was no water for the people to drink at that place, so they rebelled against Moses and Aaron.

Num.20.3

They attacked Moses: "We wish we'd died when the rest of our brothers died before GOD.

Num.20.3

They quarreled with Moses and said, "If only we had died when our brothers fell dead before the LORD!

Num.20.3

And the people contended with Moses and spoke, saying: "If only we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

Num.20.3

The people blamed Moses and said, "We wish we had died in the LORD's presence with our brothers!

Num.20.4

Why did you haul this congregation of GOD out here into this wilderness to die, people and cattle alike?

Num.20.4

Why did you bring the LORD's community into this desert, that we and our livestock should die here?

Num.20.4

Why have you brought up the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here?

Num.20.4

Did you bring the LORD's people into this wilderness to die, along with all our livestock?

Num.20.5

And why did you take us out of Egypt in the first place, dragging us into this miserable country? No grain, no figs, no grapevines, no pomegranates--and now not even any water!"

Num.20.5

Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!"

Num.20.5

And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates; nor is there any water to drink."

Num.20.5

Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us here to this terrible place? This land has no grain, figs, grapes, or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!"

Moses and Aaron walked from the assembled congregation to the Tent of Meeting and threw themselves facedown on the ground. And they saw the Glory of GOD.

Num.20.6

Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

Num.20.6

So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

Moses and Aaron turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Tabernacle, where they fell face down on the ground. Then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared to them,

GOD spoke to Moses:

The LORD said to Moses,

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

and the LORD said to Moses,

"Take the staff. Assemble the community, you and your brother Aaron. Speak to that rock that's right in front of them and it will give water. You will bring water out of the rock for them; congregation and cattle will both drink."

"Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink."

"Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals."

"You and Aaron must take the staff and assemble the entire community. As the people watch, command the rock over there to pour out its water. You will get enough water from the rock to satisfy all the people and their livestock."

Num.20.9

Moses took the staff away from GOD's presence, as commanded.

So Moses took the staff from the LORD's presence, just as he commanded him.

So Moses did as he was told. He took the staff from the place where it was kept before the LORD.

He and Aaron rounded up the whole congregation in front of the rock. Moses spoke: "Listen, rebels! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?"

He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, "Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?"

Num.20.10

And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?"

Num.20.10

Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. "Listen, you rebels!" he shouted. "Must we bring you water from this rock?"

Num.20.11

With that Moses raised his arm and slammed his staff against the rock--once, twice. Water poured out. Congregation and cattle drank.

Num.20.11

Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.

Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So all the people and their livestock drank their fill.

Num.20.12

GOD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you didn't trust me, didn't treat me with holy reverence in front of the People of Israel, you two aren't going to lead this company into the land that I am giving them."

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them."

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them."

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!"

Num.20.13

These were the Waters of Meribah (Bickering) where the People of Israel bickered with GOD, and he revealed himself as holy. [JC]

Moses sent emissaries from Kadesh to the king of Edom with this message: "A message from your brother Israel: You are familiar with all the trouble we've run into.

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: "This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come upon us.

Now Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. "Thus says your brother Israel: "You know all the hardship that has befallen us,

While Moses was at Kadesh, he sent ambassadors to the king of Edom with this message: "This message is from your relatives, the people of Israel: You know all the hardships we have been through,

Num.20.15

Our ancestors went down to Egypt and lived there a long time. The Egyptians viciously abused both us and our ancestors.

Our forefathers went down into Egypt, and we lived there many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers,

how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers.

and that our ancestors went down to Egypt. We lived there a long time and suffered as slaves to the Egyptians.

Num.20.16

But when we cried out for help to GOD, he heard our cry. He sent an angel and got us out of Egypt. And now here we are at Kadesh, a town at the border of your land.

"Will you give us permission to cut across your land? We won't trespass through your fields or orchards and we won't drink out of your wells; we'll keep to the main road, the King's Road, straying neither right nor left until we've crossed your border."

Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the king's highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory."

The king of Edom answered, "Not on your life. If you so much as set a foot on my land, I'll kill you."

But Edom answered: "You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword."

Num.20.18

Then Edom said to him, "You shall not pass through my land, lest I come out against you with the sword."

Num.20.18

But the king of Edom said, "Stay out of my land or I will meet you with an army!"

Num.20.19

The People of Israel said, "Look, we'll stay on the main road. If we or our animals drink any water, we'll pay you for it. We're harmless--just a company of footsore travelers."

Num.20.19

The Israelites replied: "We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot-nothing else."

Num.20.19

So the children of Israel said to him, "We will go by the Highway, and if I or my livestock drink any of your water, then I will pay for it; let me only pass through on foot, nothing more."

Num.20.19

The Israelites answered, "We will stay on the main road. If any of our livestock drinks your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through your country and nothing else."

He answered again: "No. You may not come through." And Edom came out and blocked the way with a crowd of people brandishing weapons.

Num.20.20

Again they answered: "You may not pass through." Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.

Num.20.20

Then he said, "You shall not pass through." So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand.

Num.20.20

But the king of Edom replied, "Stay out! You may not pass through our land." With that he mobilized his army and marched out to meet them with an imposing force.

Num.20.21

Edom refused to let them cross through his land. So Israel had to detour around him.

Num.20.21

Since Edom refused to let them go through their territory, Israel turned away from them.

Num.20.21

Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; so Israel turned away from him.

Num.20.21

Because Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through their country, Israel was forced to turn around.

Num.20.22

The People of Israel, the entire company, set out from Kadesh and traveled to Mount Hor.

Num.20.22

The whole Israelite community set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.

Num.20.22

Now the children of Israel, the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.

Num.20.22

The whole community of Israel left Kadesh as a group and arrived at Mount Hor.

GOD said to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor at the border of Edom,

Num.20.23

At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

Num.20.23

And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom, saying:

Num.20.23

Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor on the border of the land of Edom,

Num.20.24

"It's time for Aaron to be gathered into the company of his ancestors. He will not enter the land I am giving to the People of Israel because you both rebelled against my orders at the Waters of Meribah.

Num.20.24

"Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I give the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

Num.20.24

"Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against My word at the water of Meribah.

Num.20.24

"The time has come for Aaron to join his ancestors in death. He will not enter the land I am giving the people of Israel, because the two of you rebelled against my instructions concerning the waters of Meribah.

Num.20.25

So take Aaron and his son Eleazar and lead them up Mount Hor.

Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor;

Now take Aaron and his son Eleazar up Mount Hor.

The whole congregation, getting the news that Aaron had died, went into thirty days of mourning for him.

The Canaanite king of Arad, ruling in the Negev, heard that Israel was advancing up the road to Atharim. He attacked Israel and took prisoners of war.

Israel vowed a vow to GOD: "If you will give this people into our power, we'll destroy their towns and present the ruins to you as a holy destruction."

Then Israel made this vow to the LORD: "If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities."

So Israel made a vow to the LORD, and said, "If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities."

Then the people of Israel made this vow to the LORD: "If you will help us conquer these people, we will completely destroy all their towns."

GOD listened to Israel's prayer and gave them the Canaanites. They destroyed both them and their towns, a holy destruction. They named the place Hormah (Holy Destruction).
