They presented themselves before Moses and Aaron and the whole congregation of the People of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They reported to the whole congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.

They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.

Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

Then they told the story of their trip: "We went to the land to which you sent us and, oh! It does flow with milk and honey! Just look at this fruit!

They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.

Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

This was their report to Moses: "We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificent country--a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is some of its fruit as proof.

The only thing is that the people who live there are fierce, their cities are huge and well fortified. Worse yet, we saw descendants of the giant Anak.

But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.

Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.

But the people living there are powerful, and their cities and towns are fortified and very large. We also saw the descendants of Anak who are living there!

Amalekites are spread out in the Negev; Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites hold the hill country; and the Canaanites are established on the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan."

The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan."

The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan."

The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley."

Caleb interrupted, called for silence before Moses and said, "Let's go up and take the land--now. We can do it."

Num.13.30

Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it."

Num.13.30

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it."

Num.13.30

But Caleb tried to encourage the people as they stood before Moses. "Let's go at once to take the land," he said. "We can certainly conquer it!"

But the others said, "We can't attack those people; they're way stronger than we are."

Num.13.31

But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are."

Num.13.31

But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we."

Num.13.31

But the other men who had explored the land with him answered, "We can't go up against them! They are stronger than we are!"

Num.13.32

They spread scary rumors among the People of Israel. They said, "We scouted out the land from one end to the other--it's a land that swallows people whole. Everybody we saw was huge.

Num.13.32

And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.

Num.13.32

And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.

Num.13.32

So they spread discouraging reports about the land among the Israelites: "The land we explored will swallow up any who go to live there. All the people we saw were huge.

Why, we even saw the Nephilim giants (the Anak giants come from the Nephilim). Alongside them we felt like grasshoppers. And they looked down on us as if we were grasshoppers." [JC]

We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. We felt like grasshoppers next to them, and that's what we looked like to them!"

The whole community was in an uproar, wailing all night long.

Num.14.1

That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.

Num.14.1

So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.

Num.14.1

Then all the people began weeping aloud, and they cried all night.

Num.14.2

All the People of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The entire community was in on it: "Why didn't we die in Egypt? Or in this wilderness?

Num.14.2

All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert!

Num.14.2

And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!

Num.14.2

Their voices rose in a great chorus of complaint against Moses and Aaron. "We wish we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!" they wailed.

Num.14.3

Why has GOD brought us to this country to kill us? Our wives and children are about to become plunder. Why don't we just head back to Egypt? And right now!"

Num.14.3

Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?"

Num.14.3

Why has the LORD brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

Num.14.3

"Why is the LORD taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and little ones will be carried off as slaves! Let's get out of here and return to Egypt!"

Num.14.4

Soon they were all saying it to one another: "Let's pick a new leader; let's head back to Egypt."

Num.14.4

And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt."

Num.14.4

So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt."

Num.14.4

Then they plotted among themselves, "Let's choose a leader and go back to Egypt!"

Num.14.5

Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in front of the entire community, gathered in emergency session.

Num.14.5

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there.

Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

Then Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground before the people of Israel.

Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, members of the scouting party, ripped their clothes

Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;

Two of the men who had explored the land, Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, tore their clothing.

and addressed the assembled People of Israel: "The land we walked through and scouted out is a very good land--very good indeed.

and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.

Num.14.7

and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.

Num.14.7

They said to the community of Israel, "The land we explored is a wonderful land!

Num.14.8

If GOD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land that flows, as they say, with milk and honey. And he'll give it to us.

Num.14.8

If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us.

Num.14.8

If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, "a land which flows with milk and honey.'

Num.14.8

And if the LORD is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey, and he will give it to us!

Num.14.9

Just don't rebel against GOD! And don't be afraid of those people. Why, we'll have them for lunch! They have no protection and GOD is on our side. Don't be afraid of them!"

Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them."

Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them."

Do not rebel against the LORD, and don't be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the LORD is with us! Don't be afraid of them!"

Num.14.10

But, up in arms now, the entire community was talking of hurling stones at them. Just then the bright Glory of GOD appeared at the Tent of Meeting. Every Israelite saw it.

But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites.

Num.14.10

And all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Now the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of meeting before all the children of Israel.

Num.14.10

But the whole community began to talk about stoning Joshua and Caleb. Then the glorious presence of the LORD appeared to all the Israelites from above the Tabernacle.

Num.14.11

GOD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me like dirt? How long refuse to trust me? And with all these signs I've done among them!

Num.14.11

The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them?

Num.14.11

Then the LORD said to Moses: "How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?

Num.14.11

And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people reject me? Will they never believe me, even after all the miraculous signs I have done among them?

Num.14.12

I've had enough--I'm going to hit them with a plague and kill them. But I'll make you into a nation bigger and stronger than they ever were."

Num.14.12

I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they."

Num.14.12

I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."

Num.14.12

I will disown them and destroy them with a plague. Then I will make you into a nation far greater and mightier than they are!"

Num.14.13

But Moses said to GOD, "The Egyptians are going to hear about this! You delivered this people from Egypt with a great show of strength, and now this?

Num.14.13

Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.

Num.14.13

And Moses said to the LORD: "Then the Egyptians will hear it, for by Your might You brought these people up from among them,

Num.14.13

"But what will the Egyptians think when they hear about it?" Moses pleaded with the LORD. "They know full well the power you displayed in rescuing these people from Egypt.

Num.14.14

The Egyptians will tell everyone. They've already heard that you are GOD, that you are on the side of this people, that you are present among them, that they see you with their own eyes in your Cloud that hovers over them, in the Pillar of Cloud that leads them by day and the Pillar of Fire at night.

Num.14.14

And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, O LORD, are with these people and that you, O LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, LORD, are among these people; that You, LORD, are seen face to face and Your cloud stands above them, and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

Num.14.14

They will tell this to the inhabitants of this land, who are well aware that you are with this people. They know, LORD, that you have appeared in full view of your people in the pillar of cloud that hovers over them. They know that you go before them in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.

Num.14.15

If you kill this entire people in one stroke, all the nations that have heard what has been going on will say,

Num.14.15

If you put these people to death all at one time, the nations who have heard this report about you will say,

Num.14.15

Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying,

Num.14.15

Now if you slaughter all these people, the nations that have heard of your fame will say,

Num.14.16

"Since GOD couldn't get these people into the land which he had promised to give them, he slaughtered them out in the wilderness.'

Num.14.16

'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath; so he slaughtered them in the desert.'

Num.14.16

"Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.'

Num.14.16

`The LORD was not able to bring them into the land he swore to give them, so he killed them in the wilderness.'

Num.14.17

"Now, please, let the power of the Master expand, enlarge itself greatly, along the lines you have laid out earlier when you said,

Num.14.17

"Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared:

Num.14.17

And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying,

Num.14.17

"Please, Lord, prove that your power is as great as you have claimed it to be. For you said,

Num.14.18

GOD, slow to get angry and huge in loyal love, forgiving iniquity and rebellion and sin; Still, never just whitewashing sin. But extending the fallout of parents' sins to children into the third, even the fourth generation.

Num.14.18

'The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.'

Num.14.18

"The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.'

Num.14.18

`The LORD is slow to anger and rich in unfailing love, forgiving every kind of sin and rebellion. Even so he does not leave sin unpunished, but he punishes the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations.'

Num.14.19

"Please forgive the wrongdoing of this people out of the extravagance of your loyal love just as all along, from the time they left Egypt, you have been forgiving this people."

Num.14.19

In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now."

Num.14.19

Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

Num.14.19

Please pardon the sins of this people because of your magnificent, unfailing love, just as you have forgiven them ever since they left Egypt."

Num.14.20

GOD said, "I forgive them, honoring your words.

Num.14.20

The LORD replied, "I have forgiven them, as you asked.

Num.14.20

Then the LORD said: "I have pardoned, according to your word;

Num.14.20

Then the LORD said, "I will pardon them as you have requested.

Num.14.21

But as I live and as the Glory of GOD fills the whole Earth--

Num.14.21

Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth,

Num.14.21

but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD--

Num.14.21

But as surely as I live, and as surely as the earth is filled with the LORD's glory,

Num.14.22

not a single person of those who saw my Glory, saw the miracle signs I did in Egypt and the wilderness, and who have tested me over and over and over again, turning a deaf ear to me--

Num.14.22

not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times-

Num.14.22

because all these men who have seen My glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have put Me to the test now these ten times, and have not heeded My voice,

Num.14.22

not one of these people will ever enter that land. They have seen my glorious presence and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but again and again they tested me by refusing to listen.

Num.14.23

not one of them will set eyes on the land I so solemnly promised to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with such repeated contempt will see it.

Num.14.23

not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.

Num.14.23

they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it.

Num.14.23

They will never even see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have treated me with contempt will enter it.

Num.14.24

"But my servant Caleb--this is a different story. He has a different spirit; he follows me passionately. I'll bring him into the land that he scouted and his children will inherit it.

Num.14.24

But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

Num.14.24

But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.

Num.14.24

But my servant Caleb is different from the others. He has remained loyal to me, and I will bring him into the land he explored. His descendants will receive their full share of that land.

Num.14.25

"Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are so well established in the valleys, for right now change course and head back into the wilderness following the route to the Red Sea."

Num.14.25

Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea. "

Num.14.25

Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and move out into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea."

Num.14.25

Now turn around and don't go on toward the land where the Amalekites and Canaanites live. Tomorrow you must set out for the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea. "

Num.14.26

GOD spoke to Moses and Aaron:

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:

And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

Num.14.27

"How long is this going to go on, all this grumbling against me by this evil-infested community? I've had my fill of complaints from these grumbling Israelites.

Num.14.27

"How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.

Num.14.27

"How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me.

Num.14.27

"How long will this wicked nation complain about me? I have heard everything the Israelites have been saying.

Num.14.28

Tell them, As I live--GOD's decree--here's what I'm going to do:

Num.14.28

So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very things I heard you say:

Num.14.28

Say to them, "As I live,' says the LORD, "just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you:

Num.14.28

Now tell them this: `As surely as I live, I will do to you the very things I heard you say. I, the LORD, have spoken!

Num.14.29

Your corpses are going to litter the wilderness--every one of you twenty years and older who was counted in the census, this whole generation of grumblers and grousers.

Num.14.29

In this desert your bodies will fall-every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.

Num.14.29

The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above.

Num.14.29

You will all die here in this wilderness! Because you complained against me, none of you who are twenty years old or older and were counted in the census

Num.14.30

Not one of you will enter the land and make your home there, the firmly and solemnly promised land, except for Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Num.14.30

Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Num.14.30

Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.

Num.14.30

will enter the land I swore to give you. The only exceptions will be Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Num.14.31

"Your children, the very ones that you said would be taken for plunder, I'll bring in to enjoy the land you rejected

Num.14.31

As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.

Num.14.31

But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.

Num.14.31

" `You said your children would be taken captive. Well, I will bring them safely into the land, and they will enjoy what you have despised.

Num.14.32

while your corpses will be rotting in the wilderness.

Num.14.32

But you-your bodies will fall in this desert.

Num.14.32

But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.

Num.14.32

But as for you, your dead bodies will fall in this wilderness.

Num.14.33

These children of yours will live as shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, living with the fallout of your whoring unfaithfulness until the last of your generation lies a corpse in the wilderness.

Num.14.33

Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert.

Num.14.33

And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.

Num.14.33

And your children will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness forty years. In this way, they will pay for your faithlessness, until the last of you lies dead in the wilderness.

Num.14.34

You scouted out the land for forty days; your punishment will be a year for each day, a forty-year sentence to serve for your sins--a long schooling in my displeasure.

Num.14.34

For forty years-one year for each of the forty days you explored the land-you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.'

Num.14.34

According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection.

Num.14.34

" `Because the men who explored the land were there for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years--a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. You will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy.'

Num.14.35

"I, GOD, have spoken. I will most certainly carry out these things against this entire evil-infested community which has banded together against me. In this wilderness they will come to their end. There they will die."

Num.14.35

I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this desert; here they will die."

Num.14.35

I the LORD have spoken this. I will surely do so to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die."'

Num.14.35

I, the LORD, have spoken! I will do these things to every member of the community who has conspired against me. They will all die here in this wilderness!"

Num.14.36

So it happened that the men Moses sent to scout out the land returned to circulate false rumors about the land causing the entire community to grumble against Moses--

Num.14.36

So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it-

Num.14.36

Now the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation complain against him by bringing a bad report of the land,

Num.14.36

Then the ten scouts who had incited the rebellion against the LORD by spreading discouraging reports about the land

Num.14.37

all these men died. Having spread false rumors of the land, they died in a plague, confronted by GOD.

Num.14.37

these men responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD.

Num.14.37

those very men who brought the evil report about the land, died by the plague before the LORD.

Num.14.37

were struck dead with a plague before the LORD.

Num.14.38

Only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh were left alive of the men who went to scout out the land.

Num.14.38

Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

Num.14.38

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, of the men who went to spy out the land.

Num.14.38

Of the twelve who had explored the land, only Joshua and Caleb remained alive.

Num.14.39

When Moses told all of this to the People of Israel, they mourned long and hard.

Num.14.39

When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly.

Num.14.39

Then Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.

Num.14.39

When Moses reported the LORD's words to the Israelites, there was much sorrow among the people.

Num.14.40

But early the next morning they started out for the high hill country, saying, "We're here; we're ready--let's go up and attack the land that GOD promised us. We sinned, but now we're ready."

Num.14.40

Early the next morning they went up toward the high hill country. "We have sinned," they said. "We will go up to the place the LORD promised."

Num.14.40

And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Here we are, and we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised, for we have sinned!"

Num.14.40

So they got up early the next morning and set out for the hill country of Canaan. "Let's go," they said. "We realize that we have sinned, but now we are ready to enter the land the LORD has promised us."

Num.14.41

But Moses said, "Why are you crossing GOD's command yet again? This won't work.

Num.14.41

But Moses said, "Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed!

Num.14.41

And Moses said, "Now why do you transgress the command of the LORD? For this will not succeed.

Num.14.41

But Moses said, "Why are you now disobeying the LORD's orders to return to the wilderness? It won't work.

Num.14.42

Don't attack. GOD isn't with you in this--you'll be beaten badly by your enemies.

Num.14.42

Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,

Num.14.42

Do not go up, lest you be defeated by your enemies, for the LORD is not among you.

Num.14.42
