Matt.20.1

"God's kingdom is like an estate manager who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

"For the Kingdom of Heaven is like the owner of an estate who went out early one morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

They agreed on a wage of a dollar a day, and went to work.

He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

He agreed to pay the normal daily wage and sent them out to work.

"Later, about nine o'clock, the manager saw some other men hanging around the town square unemployed.

"About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.

And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

"At nine o'clock in the morning he was passing through the marketplace and saw some people standing around doing nothing.

He told them to go to work in his vineyard and he would pay them a fair wage.

He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.'

and said to them, "You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went.

Matt.20.4

So he hired them, telling them he would pay them whatever was right at the end of the day.

They went. "He did the same thing at noon, and again at three o'clock.

So they went.

Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.

At noon and again around three o'clock he did the same thing.

At five o'clock he went back and found still others standing around. He said, "Why are you standing around all day doing nothing?

"He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing. About the eleventh hour he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?'

And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, "Why have you been standing here idle all day?'

At five o'clock that evening he was in town again and saw some more people standing around. He asked them, 'Why haven't you been working today?'

Matt.20.7

'"They said, "Because no one hired us.'"He told them to go to work in his vineyard.

Matt.20.7

"'Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.'

They said to him, "Because no one hired us.' He said to them, "You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.'

"They replied, 'Because no one hired us.'"The owner of the estate told them, 'Then go on out and join the others in my vineyard.'

"When the day's work was over, the owner of the vineyard instructed his foreman, "Call the workers in and pay them their wages. Start with the last hired and go on to the first.'

"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.'

"So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, "Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.'

"That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first.

"Those hired at five o'clock came up and were each given a dollar.

"The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius.

Matt.20.9

And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius.

When those hired at five o'clock were paid, each received a full day's wage.

When those who were hired first saw that, they assumed they would get far more. But they got the same, each of them one dollar.

So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.

But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius.

When those hired earlier came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day's wage.

Taking the dollar, they groused angrily to the manager,

When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.

And when they had received it, they complained against the landowner,

When they received their pay, they protested,

Matt.20.12

"These last workers put in only one easy hour, and you just made them equal to us, who slaved all day under a scorching sun.'

Matt.20.12

'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'

saying, "These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.'

Matt.20.12

'Those people worked only one hour, and yet you've paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.'

Matt.20.13

"He replied to the one speaking for the rest, "Friend, I haven't been unfair. We agreed on the wage of a dollar, didn't we?

Matt.20.13

"But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?

Matt.20.13

But he answered one of them and said, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?

Matt.20.13

"He answered one of them, 'Friend, I haven't been unfair! Didn't you agree to work all day for the usual wage?

Matt.20.14

So take it and go. I decided to give to the one who came last the same as you.

Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you.

Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you.

Take it and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you.

Can't I do what I want with my own money? Are you going to get stingy because I am generous?'

Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?'

Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?'

Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be angry because I am kind?'

Matt.20.16

"Here it is again, the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first."

"So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen."

"And so it is, that many who are first now will be last then; and those who are last now will be first then."

Jesus, now well on the way up to Jerusalem, took the Twelve off to the side of the road and said,

As Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside privately and told them what was going to happen to him.

"Listen to me carefully. We are on our way up to Jerusalem. When we get there, the Son of Man will be betrayed to the religious leaders and scholars. They will sentence him to death.

"We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death

"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death,

"When we get to Jerusalem," he said, "the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die.

They will then hand him over to the Romans for mockery and torture and crucifixion. On the third day he will be raised up alive."
