Matt.16.1

Some Pharisees and Sadducees were on him again, pressing him to prove himself to them.

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.

One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus' claims by asking him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven.

He told them, "You have a saying that goes, "Red sky at night, sailor's delight;

He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,'

He answered and said to them, "When it is evening you say, "It will be fair weather, for the sky is red';

He replied, "You know the saying, 'Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow,

red sky at morning, sailors take warning.' You find it easy enough to forecast the weather--why can't you read the signs of the times?

and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

and in the morning, "It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.

red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.' You are good at reading the weather signs in the sky, but you can't read the obvious signs of the times!

Matt.16.4

An evil and wanton generation is always wanting signs and wonders. The only sign you'll get is the Jonah sign." Then he turned on his heel and walked away.

Matt.16.4

A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.

A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah." And He left them and departed.

Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah." Then Jesus left them and went away.

On their way to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring along bread.

Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any food.

In the meantime, Jesus said to them, "Keep a sharp eye out for Pharisee-Sadducee yeast."

"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

Then Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees."

"Watch out!" Jesus warned them. "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

Thinking he was scolding them for forgetting bread, they discussed in whispers what to do.

They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have taken no bread."

They decided he was saying this because they hadn't brought any bread.

Matt.16.8

Jesus knew what they were doing and said, "Why all these worried whispers about forgetting the bread? Runt believers!

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?

But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread?

Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he said, "You have so little faith! Why are you worried about having no food?

Matt.16.9

Haven't you caught on yet? Don't you remember the five loaves of bread and the five thousand people, and how many baskets of fragments you picked up?

Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up?

Won't you ever understand? Don't you remember the five thousand I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of food that were left over?

Or the seven loaves that fed four thousand, and how many baskets of leftovers you collected?

Matt.16.10

Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?

Matt.16.10

Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up?

Matt.16.10

Don't you remember the four thousand I fed with seven loaves, with baskets of food left over?

Matt.16.11

Haven't you realized yet that bread isn't the problem? The problem is yeast, Pharisee-Sadducee yeast."

Matt.16.11

How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?--but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

How could you even think I was talking about food? So again I say, 'Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'"

Then they got it: that he wasn't concerned about eating, but teaching--the Pharisee-Sadducee kind of teaching.

Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Then at last they understood that he wasn't speaking about yeast or bread but about the false teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "What are people saying about who the Son of Man is?"

Simon Peter said, "You're the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Jesus came back, "God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn't get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am.

Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.

Matt.16.17

Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Matt.16.17

Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.

Matt.16.18

And now I'm going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

"And that's not all. You will have complete and free access to God's kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven."

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

He swore the disciples to secrecy. He made them promise they would tell no one that he was the Messiah.

Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

Then he sternly warned them not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
