The Pharisees, along with some religion scholars who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around him.

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes came together to Him, having come from Jerusalem.

One day some Pharisees and teachers of religious law arrived from Jerusalem to confront Jesus.

They noticed that some of his disciples weren't being careful with ritual washings before meals.

saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were "unclean," that is, unwashed.

Now when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.

They noticed that some of Jesus' disciples failed to follow the usual Jewish ritual of hand washing before eating.

The Pharisees--Jews in general, in fact--would never eat a meal without going through the motions of a ritual hand-washing,

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?"

So the Pharisees and teachers of religious law asked him, "Why don't your disciples follow our age-old customs? For they eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony."

Jesus answered, "Isaiah was right about frauds like you, hit the bull's-eye in fact: These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their heart isn't in it.

He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: "This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

Jesus replied, "You hypocrites! Isaiah was prophesying about you when he said,

They act like they are worshiping me, but they don't mean it. They just use me as a cover for teaching whatever suits their fancy,

They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'

And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'

'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away. Their worship is a farce, for they replace God's commands with their own man-made teachings.'

Ditching God's command and taking up the latest fads."

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."

For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men--the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do."

For you ignore God's specific laws and substitute your own traditions."

He went on, "Well, good for you. You get rid of God's command so you won't be inconvenienced in following the religious fashions!

And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

He said to them, "All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

Then he said, "You reject God's laws in order to hold on to your own traditions.

Moses said, "Respect your father and mother,' and, "Anyone denouncing father or mother should be killed.'

For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'

Mark.7.10

For Moses said, "Honor your father and your mother'; and, "He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.'

Mark.7.10

For instance, Moses gave you this law from God: 'Honor your father and mother,' and 'Anyone who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.'

But you weasel out of that by saying that it's perfectly acceptable to say to father or mother, "Gift! What I owed you I've given as a gift to God,'

But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God),

But you say, "If a man says to his father or mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban"--' (that is, a gift to God),

But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, 'Sorry, I can't help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I could have given to you.'

thus relieving yourselves of obligation to father or mother.

then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.

You scratch out God's Word and scrawl a whim in its place. You do a lot of things like this."

As such, you break the law of God in order to protect your own tradition. And this is only one example. There are many, many others."

Jesus called the crowd together again and said, "Listen now, all of you--take this to heart.

Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.

When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, "Hear Me, everyone, and understand:

Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. "All of you listen," he said, "and try to understand.

It's not what you swallow that pollutes your life; it's what you vomit--that's the real pollution."

Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.'"

Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowds, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the statement he had made.

It doesn't enter your heart but your stomach, works its way through the intestines, and is finally flushed." (That took care of dietary quibbling; Jesus was saying that all foods are fit to eat.)

"Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'?

So He said to them, "Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,

"Don't you understand either?" he asked. "Can't you see that what you eat won't defile you?

He went on: "It's what comes out of a person that pollutes:

For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")

Food doesn't come in contact with your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then comes out again." (By saying this, he showed that every kind of food is acceptable.)

He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.'

And He said, "What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.

And then he added, "It is the thought-life that defiles you.

greed, depravity, deceptive dealings, carousing, mean looks, slander, arrogance, foolishness--

For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

For from within, out of a person's heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,

all these are vomit from the heart. There is the source of your pollution." [JC]

From there Jesus set out for the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house there where he didn't think he would be found, but he couldn't escape notice.

All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'"

He was barely inside when a woman who had a disturbed daughter heard where he was. She came and knelt at his feet,

Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.

From there He arose and went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And He entered a house and wanted no one to know it, but He could not be hidden.

Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre. He tried to keep it secret that he was there, but he couldn't. As usual, the news of his arrival spread fast.

begging for help. The woman was Greek, Syro-Phoenician by birth. She asked him to cure her daughter.

In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came and fell at his feet.

For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet.

Right away a woman came to him whose little girl was possessed by an evil spirit. She had heard about Jesus, and now she came and fell at his feet.

He said, "Stand in line and take your turn. The children get fed first. If there's any left over, the dogs get it."

The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

The woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

She begged him to release her child from the demon's control. Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia,

She said, "Of course, Master. But don't dogs under the table get scraps dropped by the children?"

Mark.7.27

"First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

Mark.7.27

But Jesus said to her, "Let the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs."

Mark.7.27

Jesus told her, "First I should help my own family, the Jews. It isn't right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs."

Mark.7.28

Jesus was impressed. "You're right! On your way! Your daughter is no longer disturbed. The demonic affliction is gone."

"Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."

Mark.7.28

And she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table eat from the children's crumbs."

She replied, "That's true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are given some crumbs from the children's plates."

Mark.7.29

She went home and found her daughter relaxed on the bed, the torment gone for good.

Mark.7.29

Then he told her, "For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter."

Mark.7.29

Then He said to her, "For this saying go your way; the demon has gone out of your daughter."

Mark.7.29

"Good answer!" he said. "And because you have answered so well, I have healed your daughter."

Mark.7.30

Then he left the region of Tyre, went through Sidon back to Galilee Lake and over to the district of the Ten Towns.

She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Mark.7.30

And when she had come to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.

And when she arrived home, her little girl was lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.
