After Jesus crossed over by boat, a large crowd met him at the seaside.

When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.

One of the meeting-place leaders named Jairus came. When he saw Jesus, he fell to his knees,

A leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, came and fell down before him,

beside himself as he begged, "My dear daughter is at death's door. Come and lay hands on her so she will get well and live."

and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."

and begged Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live."

pleading with him to heal his little daughter. "She is about to die," he said in desperation. "Please come and place your hands on her; heal her so she can live."

Jesus went with him, the whole crowd tagging along, pushing and jostling him.

A woman who had suffered a condition of hemorrhaging for twelve years--

a long succession of physicians had treated her, and treated her badly, taking all her money and leaving her worse off than before--

She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.

She was thinking to herself, "If I can put a finger on his robe, I can get well."

For she said, "If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well."

The moment she did it, the flow of blood dried up. She could feel the change and knew her plague was over and done with.

Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.

At the same moment, Jesus felt energy discharging from him. He turned around to the crowd and asked, "Who touched my robe?"

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My clothes?"

His disciples said, "What are you talking about? With this crowd pushing and jostling you, you're asking, "Who touched me?' Dozens have touched you!"

"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'"

But His disciples said to Him, "You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, "Who touched Me?"'

The woman, knowing what had happened, knowing she was the one, stepped up in fear and trembling, knelt before him, and gave him the whole story.

Jesus said to her, "Daughter, you took a risk of faith, and now you're healed and whole. Live well, live blessed! Be healed of your plague." [JC]

While he was still talking, some people came from the leader's house and told him, "Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?"

While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?"

While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?"

While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from Jairus's home with the message, "Your daughter is dead. There's no use troubling the Teacher now."

Jesus overheard what they were talking about and said to the leader, "Don't listen to them; just trust me."

Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe."

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only believe."

But Jesus ignored their comments and said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid. Just trust me."

He permitted no one to go in with him except Peter, James, and John.

They entered the leader's house and pushed their way through the gossips looking for a story and neighbors bringing in casseroles.

When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.

Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly.

When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw the commotion and the weeping and wailing.

Jesus was abrupt: "Why all this busybody grief and gossip? This child isn't dead; she's sleeping."

He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."

When He came in, He said to them, "Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping."

He went inside and spoke to the people. "Why all this weeping and commotion?" he asked. "The child isn't dead; she is only asleep."

Provoked to sarcasm, they told him he didn't know what he was talking about. But when he had sent them all out, he took the child's father and mother, along with his companions, and entered the child's room.

But they laughed at him.

And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying.

The crowd laughed at him, but he told them all to go outside. Then he took the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.

He clasped the girl's hand and said, "Talitha koum," which means, "Little girl, get up."

After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" ).

Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, "Talitha, cumi," which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise."

Holding her hand, he said to her, "Get up, little girl!"

At that, she was up and walking around! This girl was twelve years of age. They, of course, were all beside themselves with joy.

He gave them strict orders that no one was to know what had taken place in that room. Then he said, "Give her something to eat."

On the Sabbath, he gave a lecture in the meeting place. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. "We had no idea he was this good!" they said. "How did he get so wise all of a sudden, get such ability?"

When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.

And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!

The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They asked, "Where did he get all his wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?

But in the next breath they were cutting him down: "He's just a carpenter--Mary's boy. We've known him since he was a kid. We know his brothers, James, Justus, Jude, and Simon, and his sisters. Who does he think he is?" They tripped over what little they knew about him and fell, sprawling. And they never got any further.

"Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?" So they were offended at Him.

Jesus told them, "A prophet has little honor in his hometown, among his relatives, on the streets he played in as a child."

Jesus wasn't able to do much of anything there--he laid hands on a few sick people and healed them, that's all.
