Mark.15.1

At dawn's first light, the high priests, with the religious leaders and scholars, arranged a conference with the entire Jewish Council. After tying Jesus securely, they took him out and presented him to Pilate.

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.

Very early in the morning the leading priests, other leaders, and teachers of religious law--the entire high council--met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

Pilate asked him, "Are you the "King of the Jews'?" He answered, "If you say so."

Mark.15.2

"Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.

Then Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered and said to him, "It is as you say."

Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "Yes, it is as you say."

The high priests let loose a barrage of accusations.

The chief priests accused him of many things.

And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.

Then the leading priests accused him of many crimes,

Pilate asked again, "Aren't you going to answer anything? That's quite a list of accusations."

Mark.15.4

So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of."

Mark.15.4

Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, "Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!"

Mark.15.4

and Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to say something? What about all these charges against you?"

Mark.15.5

Still, he said nothing. Pilate was impressed, really impressed.

But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

Mark.15.5

But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.

Mark.15.5

But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate's surprise.

Mark.15.6

It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for.

Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested.

Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.

Now it was the governor's custom to release one prisoner each year at Passover time--anyone the people requested.

There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome.

And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.

One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, convicted along with others for murder during an insurrection.

As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner,

The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.

The mob began to crowd in toward Pilate, asking him to release a prisoner as usual.

Pilate anticipated them: "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?"

"Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate,

But Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

"Should I give you the King of the Jews?" Pilate asked.

Mark.15.10

Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.

knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.

For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

(For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)

But the high priests by then had worked up the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.

But at this point the leading priests stirred up the mob to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.

Pilate came back, "So what do I do with this man you call King of the Jews?"

"What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them.

Mark.15.12

Pilate answered and said to them again, "What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

Mark.15.12

"But if I release Barabbas," Pilate asked them, "what should I do with this man you call the King of the Jews?"

Mark.15.13

They yelled, "Nail him to a cross!"

Mark.15.13

"Crucify him!" they shouted.

Mark.15.13

So they cried out again, "Crucify Him!"

Mark.15.13

They shouted back, "Crucify him!"

Mark.15.14

Pilate objected, "But for what crime?" But they yelled all the louder, "Nail him to a cross!"

Mark.15.14

"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

Mark.15.14

Then Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they cried out all the more, "Crucify Him!"

"Why?" Pilate demanded. "What crime has he committed?" But the crowd only roared the louder, "Crucify him!"

Pilate gave the crowd what it wanted, set Barabbas free and turned Jesus over for whipping and crucifixion.

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

So Pilate, anxious to please the crowd, released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to crucify him.

The soldiers took Jesus into the palace (called Praetorium) and called together the entire brigade.

They dressed him up in purple and put a crown plaited from a thorn bush on his head.

And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,

Then they began their mockery: "Bravo, King of the Jews!"

And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"

Then they saluted, yelling, "Hail! King of the Jews!"

They banged on his head with a club, spit on him, and knelt down in mock worship.

Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.

Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.

And they beat him on the head with a stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.

After they had had their fun, they took off the purple cape and put his own clothes back on him. Then they marched out to nail him to the cross.

There was a man walking by, coming from work, Simon from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. They made him carry Jesus' cross.

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.

A man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from the country just then, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross. (Simon is the father of Alexander and Rufus.)

The soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha, meaning "Skull Hill."

They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull).

And they nailed him to the cross. They divided up his clothes and threw dice to see who would get them.

And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

Then they nailed him to the cross. They gambled for his clothes, throwing dice to decide who would get them.

They nailed him up at nine o'clock in the morning.

It was the third hour when they crucified him.

Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

It was nine o'clock in the morning when the crucifixion took place.

The charge against him--THE KING OF THE JEWS-was printed on a poster.

The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

A signboard was fastened to the cross above Jesus' head, announcing the charge against him. It read: "The King of the Jews."

Along with him, they crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left.

And the people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. "Ha! Look at you now!" they yelled at him. "You can destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days, can you?

The high priests, along with the religion scholars, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: "He saved others--but he can't save himself!

come down from the cross and save yourself!"

Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!"

Messiah, is he? King of Israel? Then let him climb down from that cross. We'll all become believers then!" Even the men crucified alongside him joined in the mockery.

In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself!

Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, "He saved others; Himself He cannot save.

The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. "He saved others," they scoffed, "but he can't save himself!

At noon the sky became extremely dark.

Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!" Even the two criminals who were being crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
