As they were at the supper table eating, Jesus said, "I have something hard but important to say to you: One of you is going to hand me over to the conspirators, one who at this moment is eating with me."

Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, "Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me."

Stunned, they started asking, one after another, "It isn't me, is it?"

They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely not I?"

And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, "Is it I?" And another said, "Is it I?"

Greatly distressed, one by one they began to ask him, "I'm not the one, am I?"

He said, "It's one of the Twelve, one who eats with me out of the same bowl.

"It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread into the bowl with me.

He answered and said to them, "It is one of the twelve, who dips with Me in the dish.

He replied, "It is one of you twelve, one who is eating with me now.

In one sense, it turns out that the Son of Man is entering into a way of treachery well-marked by the Scriptures--no surprises here. In another sense, the man who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man--better never to have been born than do this!"

The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born."

For I, the Son of Man, must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for my betrayer. Far better for him if he had never been born!"

In the course of their meal, having taken and blessed the bread, he broke it and gave it to them. Then he said, Take, this is my body.

"I'll not be drinking wine again until the new day when I drink it in the kingdom of God."

"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'

Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: "I will strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered.'

"All of you will desert me," Jesus told them. "For the Scriptures say, 'God will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'

"But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you, leading the way to Galilee."

He blustered in protest, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you." All the others said the same thing.

But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.

But he spoke more vehemently, "If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all said likewise.

They came to an area called Gethsemane. Jesus told his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."

He came back and found them sound asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, you went to sleep on me? Can't you stick it out with me a single hour?

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?

Stay alert, be in prayer, so you don't enter the danger zone without even knowing it. Don't be naive. Part of you is eager, ready for anything in God; but another part is as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire."

When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him.

Again he returned to them and found them sleeping, for they just couldn't keep their eyes open. And they didn't know what to say.

He came back a third time and said, "Are you going to sleep all night? No--you've slept long enough. Time's up. The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

When he returned to them the third time, he said, "Still sleeping? Still resting? Enough! The time has come. I, the Son of Man, am betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Get up. Let's get going. My betrayer has arrived."

Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"
