Mark.12.28

One of the religion scholars came up. Hearing the lively exchanges of question and answer and seeing how sharp Jesus was in his answers, he put in his question: "Which is most important of all the commandments?"

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?"

Mark.12.28

One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the discussion. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

Jesus said, "The first in importance is, "Listen, Israel: The Lord your God is one;

"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: "Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.

Jesus replied, "The most important commandment is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.

so love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.'

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'

Mark.12.30

And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.

And here is the second: "Love others as well as you love yourself.' There is no other commandment that ranks with these."

And the second, like it, is this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these."

The religion scholar said, "A wonderful answer, Teacher! So lucid and accurate--that God is one and there is no other.

"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.

Mark.12.32

So the scribe said to Him, "Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.

Mark.12.32

The teacher of religious law replied, "Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and no other.

Mark.12.33

And loving him with all passion and intelligence and energy, and loving others as well as you love yourself. Why, that's better than all offerings and sacrifices put together!"

To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbors as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law."

When Jesus realized how insightful he was, he said, "You're almost there, right on the border of God's kingdom." After that, no one else dared ask a question. [JC]

When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." But after that no one dared question Him.

Realizing this man's understanding, Jesus said to him, "You are not far from the Kingdom of God." And after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

While he was teaching in the Temple, Jesus asked, "How is it that the religion scholars say that the Messiah is David's "son,'

While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David?

Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?

Later, as Jesus was teaching the people in the Temple, he asked, "Why do the teachers of religious law claim that the Messiah will be the son of David?

when we all know that David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said, God said to my Master, "Sit here at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."

David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared: "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet."'

For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: "The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."'

For David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, 'The LORD said to my Lord, Sit in honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.'

"David here designates the Messiah "my Master'--so how can the Messiah also be his "son'?" The large crowd was delighted with what they heard.

David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd listened to him with delight.

Mark.12.37

Therefore David himself calls Him "Lord'; how is He then his Son?" And the common people heard Him gladly.

Mark.12.37

Since David himself called him Lord, how can he be his son at the same time?" And the crowd listened to him with great interest.

Mark.12.38

He continued teaching. "Watch out for the religion scholars. They love to walk around in academic gowns, preening in the radiance of public flattery,

As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces,

Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces,

Mark.12.38

Here are some of the other things he taught them at this time: "Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they love to parade in flowing robes and to have everyone bow to them as they walk in the marketplaces.

basking in prominent positions, sitting at the head table at every church function.

Mark.12.39

and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

Mark.12.39

the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,

Mark.12.39

And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and at banquets.

Mark.12.40

And all the time they are exploiting the weak and helpless. The longer their prayers, the worse they get. But they'll pay for it in the end."

They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."

who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."

But they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property, and then, to cover up the kind of people they really are, they make long prayers in public. Because of this, their punishment will be the greater."

Sitting across from the offering box, he was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions.

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.

Jesus went over to the collection box in the Temple and sat and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts.

One poor widow came up and put in two small coins--a measly two cents.

But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans.

Then a poor widow came and dropped in two pennies.

Mark.12.43

Jesus called his disciples over and said, "The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.

Mark.12.43

So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury;

He called his disciples to him and said, "I assure you, this poor widow has given more than all the others have given.

Mark.12.44

All the others gave what they'll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn't afford--she gave her all."

They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on."

for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood."

For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has."
