Not long after that, Jesus went to the village Nain. His disciples were with him, along with quite a large crowd.

As they approached the village gate, they met a funeral procession--a woman's only son was being carried out for burial. And the mother was a widow.

When Jesus saw her, his heart broke. He said to her, "Don't cry."

The dead son sat up and began talking. Jesus presented him to his mother.

They all realized they were in a place of holy mystery, that God was at work among them. They were quietly worshipful--and then noisily grateful, calling out among themselves, "God is back, looking to the needs of his people!"

They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."

Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen up among us"; and, "God has visited His people."

Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, "A mighty prophet has risen among us," and "We have seen the hand of God at work today."

The news of Jesus spread all through the country.

John's disciples reported back to him the news of all these events taking place.

The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,

He sent two of them to the Master to ask the question, "Are you the One we've been expecting, or are we still waiting?"

And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?"

The men showed up before Jesus and said, "John the Baptizer sent us to ask you, "Are you the One we've been expecting, or are we still waiting?'"

When the men came to Jesus, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?'"

John's two disciples found Jesus and said to him, "John the Baptist sent us to ask, 'Are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?'"

In the next two or three hours Jesus healed many from diseases, distress, and evil spirits. To many of the blind he gave the gift of sight.

Then he gave his answer: "Go back and tell John what you have just seen and heard: The blind see, The lame walk, Lepers are cleansed, The deaf hear, The dead are raised, The wretched of the earth have God's salvation hospitality extended to them.

So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

Then he told John's disciples, "Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard--the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.

"Is this what you were expecting? Then count yourselves fortunate!"

Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."

And tell him, 'God blesses those who are not offended by me. '"

After John's messengers left to make their report, Jesus said more about John to the crowd of people. "What did you expect when you went out to see him in the wild? A weekend camper?

After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

After they left, Jesus talked to the crowd about John. "Who is this man in the wilderness that you went out to see? Did you find him weak as a reed, moved by every breath of wind?

Hardly. What then? A sheik in silk pajamas? Not in the wilderness, not by a long shot.

If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.

But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings' courts.

Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces, not in the wilderness.

What then? A messenger from God? That's right, a messenger! Probably the greatest messenger you'll ever hear.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.

He is the messenger Malachi announced when he wrote, I'm sending my messenger on ahead To make the road smooth for you.

This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

This is he of whom it is written: "Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.'

John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, 'Look, I am sending my messenger before you, and he will prepare your way before you.'

"Let me lay it out for you as plainly as I can: No one in history surpasses John the Baptizer, but in the kingdom he prepared you for, the lowliest person is ahead of him.

I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

The ordinary and disreputable people who heard John, by being baptized by him into the kingdom, are the clearest evidence;

(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because they had been baptized by John.

And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.

When they heard this, all the people, including the unjust tax collectors, agreed that God's plan was right, for they had been baptized by John.

the Pharisees and religious officials would have nothing to do with such a baptism, wouldn't think of giving up their place in line to their inferiors.

"How shall I describe this generation?" Jesus asked. "With what will I compare them?

They're like spoiled children complaining to their parents, "We wanted to skip rope and you were always too tired; we wanted to talk but you were always too busy.'

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.'
