At about that same time he climbed a mountain to pray. He was there all night in prayer before God.

Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

And if you do good only to those who do good to you, is that so wonderful? Even sinners do that much!

If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that's charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers does that.

And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full.

And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.

And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, what good is that? Even sinners will lend to their own kind for a full return.

"I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. You'll never--I promise--regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we're at our worst.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
