A huge crowd of people followed, along with women weeping and carrying on.

As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.

At one point Jesus turned to the women and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't cry for me. Cry for yourselves and for your children.

When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his right, the other on his left.

The people stood there staring at Jesus, and the ringleaders made faces, taunting, "He saved others. Let's see him save himself! The Messiah of God--ha! The Chosen--ha!"

And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God."

The crowd watched, and the leaders laughed and scoffed. "He saved others," they said, "let him save himself if he is really God's Chosen One, the Messiah."

"So you're King of the Jews! Save yourself!"

One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him: "Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!"

And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

A signboard was nailed to the cross above him with these words: "This is the King of the Jews."

But the other one made him shut up: "Have you no fear of God? You're getting the same as him.

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us."

One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, "So you're the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself--and us, too, while you're at it!"

We deserve this, but not him--he did nothing to deserve this."

But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence?

But the other criminal protested, "Don't you fear God even when you are dying?

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom."

We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."

He said, "Don't worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise."

All who had come around as spectators to watch the show, when they saw what actually happened, were overcome with grief and headed home.

The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, "Surely this was a righteous man."

Those who knew Jesus well, along with the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a respectful distance and kept vigil.

When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.

And when the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw all that had happened, they went home in deep sorrow.
