Luke.20.27

Some Sadducees came up. This is the Jewish party that denies any possibility of resurrection. They asked,

Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question.

Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, came to Him and asked Him,

Then some Sadducees stepped forward--a group of Jews who say there is no resurrection after death.

"Teacher, Moses wrote us that if a man dies and leaves a wife but no child, his brother is obligated to take the widow to wife and get her with child.

"Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother.

saying: "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

They posed this question: "Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife but no children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will be the brother's heir.

Well, there once were seven brothers. The first took a wife. He died childless.

Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.

Now there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and died without children.

Well, there were seven brothers. The oldest married and then died without children.

His brother married the widow, but he also died. Still no children.

then the third, and eventually all seven had their turn, but no child.

and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children.

Then the third took her, and in like manner the seven also; and they left no children, and died.

And so it went, one after the other, until each of the seven had married her and died, leaving no children.

After all that, the wife died.

Finally, the woman died too.

That wife, now--in the resurrection whose wife is she? All seven married her."

Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?"

Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife does she become? For all seven had her as wife."

So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection? For all seven were married to her!"

Jesus said, "Marriage is a major preoccupation here,

Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage.

Jesus answered and said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.

Jesus replied, "Marriage is for people here on earth.

Luke.20.35

but not there. Those who are included in the resurrection of the dead will no longer be concerned with marriage

But those who are considered worthy of taking part in that age and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage,

But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

But that is not the way it will be in the age to come. For those worthy of being raised from the dead won't be married then.

nor, of course, with death. They will have better things to think about, if you can believe it. All ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God.

and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection.

nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

And they will never die again. In these respects they are like angels. They are children of God raised up to new life.

Even Moses exclaimed about resurrection at the burning bush, saying, "God: God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob!'

But in the account of the bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord 'the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'

But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord "the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'

But now, as to whether the dead will be raised--even Moses proved this when he wrote about the burning bush. Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, he referred to the Lord as 'the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.'

God isn't the God of dead men, but of the living. To him all are alive."

Some of the religion scholars said, "Teacher, that's a great answer!"

Some of the teachers of the law responded, "Well said, teacher!"

Then some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."

"Well said, Teacher!" remarked some of the teachers of religious law who were standing there.

For a while, anyway, no one dared put questions to him. [JC]

And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

But after that they dared not question Him anymore.

And that ended their questions; no one dared to ask any more.

Then he put a question to them: "How is it that they say that the Messiah is David's son?

Then Jesus said to them, "How is it that they say the Christ is the Son of David?

And He said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David?

Luke.20.41

Then Jesus presented them with a question. "Why is it," he asked, "that the Messiah is said to be the son of David?

In the Book of Psalms, David clearly says, God said to my Master, "Sit here at my right hand

David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand

Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: "The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand,

For David himself wrote in the book of Psalms: 'The LORD said to my Lord, Sit in honor at my right hand

until I put your enemies under your feet."

until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'

until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.'

"David here designates the Messiah as "my Master'--so how can the Messiah also be his "son'?"

David calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?"

Therefore David calls Him "Lord'; how is He then his Son?"

Since David called him Lord, how can he be his son at the same time?"

With everybody listening, Jesus spoke to his disciples.

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,

Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples,

Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said,

"Watch out for the religion scholars. They love to walk around in academic gowns, preen in the radiance of public flattery, bask in prominent positions, sit at the head table at every church function.

"Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.

"Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts,

"Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they love to parade in flowing robes and to have everyone bow to them as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and at banquets.

And all the time they are exploiting the weak and helpless. The longer their prayers, the worse they get. But they'll pay for it in the end."

They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."

But they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property, and then, to cover up the kind of people they really are, they make long prayers in public. Because of this, their punishment will be the greater."

Just then he looked up and saw the rich people dropping offerings in the collection plate.

As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.

While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people putting their gifts into the collection box.

Then he saw a poor widow put in two pennies.

and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites.

Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two pennies.

He said, "The plain truth is that this widow has given by far the largest offering today.

"I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others.

So He said, "Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all;

"I assure you," he said, "this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.

All these others made offerings that they'll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn't afford--she gave her all!"

All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had."

For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has."
