Going into the Temple he began to throw out everyone who had set up shop, selling everything and anything.

Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the merchants from their stalls.

He said, "It's written in Scripture, My house is a house of prayer; You have turned it into a religious bazaar."

"It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be a house of prayer'; but you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"

He told them, "The Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be a place of prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves."

From then on he taught each day in the Temple. The high priests, religion scholars, and the leaders of the people were trying their best to find a way to get rid of him.

Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him.

One day he was teaching the people in the Temple, proclaiming the Message. The high priests, religion scholars, and leaders confronted

One day as he was teaching the people in the temple courts and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him.

Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him

One day as Jesus was teaching and preaching the Good News in the Temple, the leading priests and teachers of religious law and other leaders came up to him.

him and demanded, "Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to speak and act like this?"

"Tell us by what authority you are doing these things," they said. "Who gave you this authority?"

and spoke to Him, saying, "Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?"

They demanded, "By whose authority did you drive out the merchants from the Temple? Who gave you such authority?"

Luke.20.3

Jesus answered, "First, let me ask you a question:

He replied, "I will also ask you a question. Tell me,

But He answered and said to them, "I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me:

"Let me ask you a question first," he replied.

They were on the spot, and knew it. They pulled back into a huddle and whispered, "If we say "heaven,' he'll ask us why we didn't believe him;

They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Why didn't you believe him?'

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, "From heaven,' He will say, "Why then did you not believe him?'

They talked it over among themselves. "If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe him.

if we say "humans,' the people will tear us limb from limb, convinced as they are that John was God's prophet."

But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet."

They agreed to concede that round to Jesus and said they didn't know.

Jesus said, "Then neither will I answer your question."

And Jesus responded, "Then I won't answer your question either."

Jesus told another story to the people: "A man planted a vineyard. He handed it over to farmhands and went off on a trip. He was gone a long time.

He went on to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.

Then He began to tell the people this parable: "A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to vinedressers, and went into a far country for a long time.

Now Jesus turned to the people again and told them this story: "A man planted a vineyard, leased it out to tenant farmers, and moved to another country to live for several years.

In time he sent a servant back to the farmhands to collect the profits, but they beat him up and sent him off empty-handed.

He decided to try again and sent another servant. That one they beat black and blue, and sent him off empty-handed.

He tried a third time. They worked that servant over from head to foot and dumped him in the street.

And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.

A third man was sent and the same thing happened. He, too, was wounded and chased away.

"Then the owner of the vineyard said, "I know what I'll do: I'll send my beloved son. They're bound to respect my son.'

"Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.'

"Then the owner of the vineyard said, "What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.'

"'What will I do?' the owner asked himself. 'I know! I'll send my cherished son. Surely they will respect him.'

"But when the farmhands saw him coming, they quickly put their heads together. "This is our chance--this is the heir! Let's kill him and have it all to ourselves.'

"But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. 'This is the heir,' they said. 'Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, "This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'

"But when the farmers saw his son, they said to each other, 'Here comes the heir to this estate. Let's kill him and get the estate for ourselves!'

They killed him and threw him over the fence. "What do you think the owner of the vineyard will do?

So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him. "What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to those farmers?" Jesus asked.

Right. He'll come and clean house. Then he'll assign the care of the vineyard to others." Those who were listening said, "Oh, no! He'd never do that!"

"What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When the people heard this, they said, "May this never be!"

He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others." And when they heard it they said, "Certainly not!"

"I'll tell you--he will come and kill them all and lease the vineyard to others.But God forbid that such a thing should ever happen," his listeners protested.

But Jesus didn't back down. "Why, then, do you think this was written: That stone the masons threw out--It's now the cornerstone!?

Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is the meaning of that which is written: "'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone '?

Then He looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone'?

Jesus looked at them and said, "Then what do the Scriptures mean? 'The stone rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone.'

"Anyone falling over that stone will break every bone in his body; if the stone falls on anyone, it will be a total smashup."

Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed."

Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder."

All who stumble over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls."

The religion scholars and high priests wanted to lynch him on the spot, but they were intimidated by public opinion. They knew the story was about them.

The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people--for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

When the teachers of religious law and the leading priests heard this story, they wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was pointing at them--that they were the farmers in the story. But they were afraid there would be a riot if they arrested him.

Watching for a chance to get him, they sent spies who posed as honest inquirers, hoping to trick him into saying something that would get him in trouble with the law.

Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent secret agents pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus.

So they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you're honest and straightforward when you teach, that you don't pander to anyone but teach the way of God accurately.

So the spies questioned him: "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.

Then they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

They said, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You sincerely teach the ways of God.

Tell us: Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

Now tell us--is it right to pay taxes to the Roman government or not?"

He knew they were laying for him and said,

He saw through their duplicity and said to them,

But He perceived their craftiness, and said to them, "Why do you test Me?

He saw through their trickery and said,

"Show me a coin. Now, this engraving, who does it look like and what does it say?"

"Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?"

Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?" They answered and said, "Caesar's."

"Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped on it?Caesar's," they replied.

"Caesar," they said. Jesus said, "Then give Caesar what is his and give God what is his."

"Caesar's," they replied. He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

And He said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."

"Well then," he said, "give to Caesar what belongs to him. But everything that belongs to God must be given to God."

Try as they might, they couldn't trap him into saying anything incriminating. His answer caught them off guard and left them speechless.

They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

But they could not catch Him in His words in the presence of the people. And they marveled at His answer and kept silent.

So they failed to trap him in the presence of the people. Instead, they were amazed by his answer, and they were silenced.
