Luke.18.1

Jesus told them a story showing that it was necessary for them to pray consistently and never quit.

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,

Luke.18.1

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to illustrate their need for constant prayer and to show them that they must never give up.

Luke.18.2

He said, "There was once a judge in some city who never gave God a thought and cared nothing for people.

Luke.18.2

He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men.

Luke.18.2

saying: "There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man.

Luke.18.2

"There was a judge in a certain city," he said, "who was a godless man with great contempt for everyone.

Luke.18.3

A widow in that city kept after him: "My rights are being violated. Protect me!'

Luke.18.3

And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'

Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, "Get justice for me from my adversary.'

Luke.18.3

A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, appealing for justice against someone who had harmed her.

"He never gave her the time of day. But after this went on and on he said to himself, "I care nothing what God thinks, even less what people think.

"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men,

And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, "Though I do not fear God nor regard man,

Luke.18.4

The judge ignored her for a while, but eventually she wore him out. 'I fear neither God nor man,' he said to himself,

But because this widow won't quit badgering me, I'd better do something and see that she gets justice--otherwise I'm going to end up beaten black and blue by her pounding.'"

yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!'"

Luke.18.5

yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me."'

Luke.18.5

'but this woman is driving me crazy. I'm going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!'"

Luke.18.6

Then the Master said, "Do you hear what that judge, corrupt as he is, is saying?

Luke.18.6

And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says.

Luke.18.6

Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said.

Luke.18.6

Then the Lord said, "Learn a lesson from this evil judge.

Luke.18.7

So what makes you think God won't step in and work justice for his chosen people, who continue to cry out for help? Won't he stick up for them?

Luke.18.7

And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

Luke.18.7

And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?

Luke.18.7

Even he rendered a just decision in the end, so don't you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who plead with him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?

Luke.18.8

I assure you, he will. He will not drag his feet. But how much of that kind of persistent faith will the Son of Man find on the earth when he returns?"

I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?"

Luke.18.8

I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when I, the Son of Man, return, how many will I find who have faith?"

He told his next story to some who were complacently pleased with themselves over their moral performance and looked down their noses at the common people:

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:

Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Then Jesus told this story to some who had great self-confidence and scorned everyone else:

"Two men went up to the Temple to pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax man.

The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, "God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

The proud Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: 'I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else, especially like that tax collector over there! For I never cheat, I don't sin, I don't commit adultery,

I fast twice a week and tithe on all my income.'

"Meanwhile the tax man, slumped in the shadows, his face in his hands, not daring to look up, said, "God, give mercy. Forgive me, a sinner.'"

"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'

And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me a sinner!'

"But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, 'O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.'

Jesus commented, "This tax man, not the other, went home made right with God. If you walk around with your nose in the air, you're going to end up flat on your face, but if you're content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself." [JC]

"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For the proud will be humbled, but the humble will be honored."

People brought babies to Jesus, hoping he might touch them. When the disciples saw it, they shooed them off.

One day some parents brought their little children to Jesus so he could touch them and bless them, but the disciples told them not to bother him.

Jesus called them back. "Let these children alone. Don't get between them and me. These children are the kingdom's pride and joy.

But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Mark this: Unless you accept God's kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you'll never get in."

I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

One day one of the local officials asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to deserve eternal life?"

A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: "Good teacher, what should I do to get eternal life?"

Luke.18.19

Jesus said, "Why are you calling me good? No one is good--only God.

Luke.18.19

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.

Luke.18.19

So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

Luke.18.19

"Why do you call me good?" Jesus asked him. "Only God is truly good.

Luke.18.20

You know the commandments, don't you? No illicit sex, no killing, no stealing, no lying, honor your father and mother."

You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'"

But as for your question, you know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.'"

He said, "I've kept them all for as long as I can remember."

The man replied, "I've obeyed all these commandments since I was a child."

When Jesus heard that, he said, "Then there's only one thing left to do: Sell everything you own and give it away to the poor. You will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me."

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

"There is still one thing you lack," Jesus said. "Sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

This was the last thing the official expected to hear. He was very rich and became terribly sad. He was holding on tight to a lot of things and not about to let them go.

When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth.

Seeing his reaction, Jesus said, "Do you have any idea how difficult it is for people who have it all to enter God's kingdom?

Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!

And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!

Jesus watched him go and then said to his disciples, "How hard it is for rich people to get into the Kingdom of God!

Luke.18.25

I'd say it's easier to thread a camel through a needle's eye than get a rich person into God's kingdom."

Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

"Then who has any chance at all?" the others asked.

Those who heard this said, "Then who in the world can be saved?"

"No chance at all," Jesus said, "if you think you can pull it off by yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it."

Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

But He said, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God."

Luke.18.27

He replied, "What is impossible from a human perspective is possible with God."

Luke.18.28

Peter tried to regain some initiative: "We left everything we owned and followed you, didn't we?"

Peter said to him, "We have left all we had to follow you!"

Luke.18.28

Then Peter said, "See, we have left all and followed You."

Luke.18.28

Peter said, "We have left our homes and followed you."

Luke.18.29

"Yes," said Jesus, "and you won't regret it. No one who has sacrificed home, spouse, brothers and sisters, parents, children--whatever-

Luke.18.29

"I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God

So He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,

"Yes," Jesus replied, "and I assure you, everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God,

Luke.18.30

will lose out. It will all come back multiplied many times over in your lifetime. And then the bonus of eternal life!"

will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life."
