"There once was a rich man, expensively dressed in the latest fashions, wasting his days in conspicuous consumption.

Jesus said, "There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed and who lived each day in luxury.

A poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, had been dumped on his doorstep.

But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,

At his door lay a diseased beggar named Lazarus.

All he lived for was to get a meal from scraps off the rich man's table. His best friends were the dogs who came and licked his sores.

As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man's table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.

"Then he died, this poor man, and was taken up by the angels to the lap of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.

In hell and in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham in the distance and Lazarus in his lap.

And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

and his soul went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Lazarus in the far distance with Abraham.

He called out, "Father Abraham, mercy! Have mercy! Send Lazarus to dip his finger in water to cool my tongue. I'm in agony in this fire.'

So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

"Then he cried and said, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.'

"The rich man shouted, 'Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in these flames.'

"But Abraham said, "Child, remember that in your lifetime you got the good things and Lazarus the bad things. It's not like that here. Here he's consoled and you're tormented.

"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

But Abraham said, "Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

"But Abraham said to him, 'Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.

Besides, in all these matters there is a huge chasm set between us so that no one can go from us to you even if he wanted to, nor can anyone cross over from you to us.'

And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

"The rich man said, "Then let me ask you, Father: Send him to the house of my father

"Then the rich man said, 'Please, Father Abraham, send him to my father's home.

where I have five brothers, so he can tell them the score and warn them so they won't end up here in this place of torment.'

"Abraham answered, "They have Moses and the Prophets to tell them the score. Let them listen to them.'

"But Abraham said, 'Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read their writings anytime they want to.'

I know, Father Abraham,' he said, "but they're not listening. If someone came back to them from the dead, they would change their ways.'

"'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'

And he said, "No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'

"The rich man replied, 'No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will turn from their sins.'

"Abraham replied, "If they won't listen to Moses and the Prophets, they're not going to be convinced by someone who rises from the dead.'"

"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

But he said to him, "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead."'

"But Abraham said, 'If they won't listen to Moses and the prophets, they won't listen even if someone rises from the dead.'"

He said to his disciples, "Hard trials and temptations are bound to come, but too bad for whoever brings them on!

Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come.

Then He said to the disciples, "It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!

One day Jesus said to his disciples, "There will always be temptations to sin, but how terrible it will be for the person who does the tempting.

Better to wear a millstone necklace and take a swim in the deep blue sea than give even one of these dear little ones a hard time!

It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.

It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck than to face the punishment in store for harming one of these little ones.

"Be alert. If you see your friend going wrong, correct him. If he responds, forgive him.

So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.

The apostles came up and said to the Master, "Give us more faith."

One day the apostles said to the Lord, "We need more faith; tell us how to get it."

But the Master said, "You don't need more faith. There is no "more' or "less' in faith. If you have a bare kernel of faith, say the size of a poppy seed, you could say to this sycamore tree, "Go jump in the lake,' and it would do it.

He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

So the Lord said, "If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, "Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

"Even if you had faith as small as a mustard seed," the Lord answered, "you could say to this mulberry tree, 'May God uproot you and throw you into the sea,' and it would obey you!

"Suppose one of you has a servant who comes in from plowing the field or tending the sheep. Would you take his coat, set the table, and say, "Sit down and eat'?

"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'?

And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, "Come at once and sit down to eat'?

"When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, he doesn't just sit down and eat.

Luke.17.8

Wouldn't you be more likely to say, "Prepare dinner; change your clothes and wait table for me until I've finished my coffee; then go to the kitchen and have your supper'?

Luke.17.8

Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'?

Luke.17.8

But will he not rather say to him, "Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink'?

He must first prepare his master's meal and serve him his supper before eating his own.

Luke.17.9

Does the servant get special thanks for doing what's expected of him?

Luke.17.9

Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?

Luke.17.9

Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

Luke.17.9

And the servant is not even thanked, because he is merely doing what he is supposed to do.

Luke.17.10

It's the same with you. When you've done everything expected of you, be matter-of-fact and say, "The work is done. What we were told to do, we did.'"

So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"

So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, "We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do."'

In the same way, when you obey me you should say, 'We are not worthy of praise. We are servants who have simply done our duty.'"
