Luke.13.1

About that time some people came up and told him about the Galileans Pilate had killed while they were at worship, mixing their blood with the blood of the sacrifices on the altar.

Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.

There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were sacrificing at the Temple in Jerusalem.

Luke.13.2

Jesus responded, "Do you think those murdered Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans?

Luke.13.2

Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?

Luke.13.2

And Jesus answered and said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?

Luke.13.2

"Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than other people from Galilee?" he asked. "Is that why they suffered?

Luke.13.3

Not at all. Unless you turn to God, you too will die.

Luke.13.3

I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Luke.13.3

I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.

Luke.13.3

Not at all! And you will also perish unless you turn from your evil ways and turn to God.

Luke.13.4

And those eighteen in Jerusalem the other day, the ones crushed and killed when the Tower of Siloam collapsed and fell on them, do you think they were worse citizens than all other Jerusalemites?

Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them--do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?

Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem?

And what about the eighteen men who died when the Tower of Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem?

Luke.13.5

Not at all. Unless you turn to God, you too will die."

I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will also perish."

Luke.13.6

Then he told them a story: "A man had an apple tree planted in his front yard. He came to it expecting to find apples, but there weren't any.

Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.

He also spoke this parable: "A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.

Then Jesus used this illustration: "A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.

Luke.13.7

He said to his gardener, "What's going on here? For three years now I've come to this tree expecting apples and not one apple have I found. Chop it down! Why waste good ground with it any longer?'

So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'

Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, "Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?'

Luke.13.7

Finally, he said to his gardener, 'I've waited three years, and there hasn't been a single fig! Cut it down. It's taking up space we can use for something else.'

"The gardener said, "Let's give it another year. I'll dig around it and fertilize,

"'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it.

Luke.13.8

But he answered and said to him, "Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.

Luke.13.8

"The gardener answered, 'Give it one more chance. Leave it another year, and I'll give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer.

Luke.13.9

and maybe it will produce next year; if it doesn't, then chop it down.'"

Luke.13.9

If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"

Luke.13.9

And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down."'

Luke.13.9

If we get figs next year, fine. If not, you can cut it down.'"

Luke.13.10

He was teaching in one of the meeting places on the Sabbath.

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,

One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,

There was a woman present, so twisted and bent over with arthritis that she couldn't even look up. She had been afflicted with this for eighteen years.

and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.

And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.

he saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.

Luke.13.12

When Jesus saw her, he called her over. "Woman, you're free!"

When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."

But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, "Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity."

When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, "Woman, you are healed of your sickness!"

He laid hands on her and suddenly she was standing straight and tall, giving glory to God.

Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

Luke.13.13

And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

Then he touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised and thanked God!

Luke.13.14

The meeting-place president, furious because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the congregation, "Six days have been defined as work days. Come on one of the six if you want to be healed, but not on the seventh, the Sabbath."

Luke.13.14

Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath."

Luke.13.14

But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, "There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day."

Luke.13.14

But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. "There are six days of the week for working," he said to the crowd. "Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath."

Luke.13.15

But Jesus shot back, "You frauds! Each Sabbath every one of you regularly unties your cow or donkey from its stall, leads it out for water, and thinks nothing of it.

Luke.13.15

The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?

Luke.13.15

The Lord then answered him and said, "Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it?

Luke.13.15

But the Lord replied, "You hypocrite! You work on the Sabbath day! Don't you untie your ox or your donkey from their stalls on the Sabbath and lead them out for water?

Luke.13.16

So why isn't it all right for me to untie this daughter of Abraham and lead her from the stall where Satan has had her tied these eighteen years?"

Luke.13.16

Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"

Luke.13.16

So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound--think of it--for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?"

Luke.13.16

Wasn't it necessary for me, even on the Sabbath day, to free this dear woman from the bondage in which Satan has held her for eighteen years?"

Luke.13.17

When he put it that way, his critics were left looking quite silly and red-faced. The congregation was delighted and cheered him on.

When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.

This shamed his enemies. And all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things he did.

Luke.13.18

Then he said, "How can I picture God's kingdom for you? What kind of story can I use?

Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to?

Luke.13.18

Then He said, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it?

Luke.13.18

Then Jesus said, "What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it?

Luke.13.19

It's like a pine nut that a man plants in his front yard. It grows into a huge pine tree with thick branches, and eagles build nests in it."

It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches."

He tried again. "How can I picture God's kingdom?

Again he asked, "What shall I compare the kingdom of God to?

And again He said, "To what shall I liken the kingdom of God?

He also asked, "What else is the Kingdom of God like?

Luke.13.21

It's like yeast that a woman works into enough dough for three loaves of bread--and waits while the dough rises."

It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough."

It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened."

It is like yeast used by a woman making bread. Even though she used a large amount of flour, the yeast permeated every part of the dough."

He went on teaching from town to village, village to town, but keeping on a steady course toward Jerusalem.

Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.

And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

A bystander said, "Master, will only a few be saved?" He said,

Someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?"

Luke.13.23

Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" And He said to them,

Someone asked him, "Lord, will only a few be saved?" He replied,

Luke.13.24

"Whether few or many is none of your business. Put your mind on your life with God. The way to life--to God!-is vigorous and requires your total attention. A lot of you are going to assume that you'll sit down to God's salvation banquet just because you've been hanging around the neighborhood all your lives.

He said to them, "Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

"Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

"The door to heaven is narrow. Work hard to get in, because many will try to enter,

Luke.13.25

Well, one day you're going to be banging on the door, wanting to get in, but you'll find the door locked and the Master saying, "Sorry, you're not on my guest list.'

Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Sir, open the door for us.'"But he will answer, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'

When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, "Lord, Lord, open for us,' and He will answer and say to you, "I do not know you, where you are from,'

but when the head of the house has locked the door, it will be too late. Then you will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Lord, open the door for us!' But he will reply, 'I do not know you.'

"You'll protest, "But we've known you all our lives!'

"Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'

Luke.13.26

then you will begin to say, "We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.'

You will say, 'But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'

Luke.13.27

only to be interrupted with his abrupt, "Your kind of knowing can hardly be called knowing. You don't know the first thing about me.'

"But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!'

Luke.13.27

But He will say, "I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.'

Luke.13.27

And he will reply, 'I tell you, I don't know you. Go away, all you who do evil.'

Luke.13.28

"That's when you'll find yourselves out in the cold, strangers to grace. You'll watch Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets march into God's kingdom.

"There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.

"And there will be great weeping and gnashing of teeth, for you will see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets within the Kingdom of God, but you will be thrown out.

You'll watch outsiders stream in from east, west, north, and south and sit down at the table of God's kingdom. And all the time you'll be outside looking in--and wondering what happened.

People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.

This is the Great Reversal: the last in line put at the head of the line, and the so-called first ending up last. [JC]

And note this: Some who are despised now will be greatly honored then; and some who are greatly honored now will be despised then. "
