"Keep your shirts on; keep the lights on!

"Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,

Be like house servants waiting for their master to come back from his honeymoon, awake and ready to open the door when he arrives and knocks.

like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.

and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately.

as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks.

Lucky the servants whom the master finds on watch! He'll put on an apron, sit them at the table, and serve them a meal, sharing his wedding feast with them.

It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.

Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them.

There will be special favor for those who are ready and waiting for his return. I tell you, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat!

It doesn't matter what time of the night he arrives; they're awake--and so blessed!

It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night.

And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

He may come in the middle of the night or just before dawn. But whenever he comes, there will be special favor for his servants who are ready!

"You know that if the house owner had known what night the burglar was coming, he wouldn't have stayed out late and left the place unlocked.

But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.

"Know this: A homeowner who knew exactly when a burglar was coming would not permit the house to be broken into.

So don't you be slovenly and careless. Just when you don't expect him, the Son of Man will show up."

You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

You must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected."

Peter said, "Master, are you telling this story just for us? Or is it for everybody?"

Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"

Then Peter said to Him, "Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?"

Peter asked, "Lord, is this illustration just for us or for everyone?"

Luke.12.42

The Master said, "Let me ask you: Who is the dependable manager, full of common sense, that the master puts in charge of his staff to feed them well and on time?

The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?

And the Lord said, "Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

Luke.12.42

And the Lord replied, "I'm talking to any faithful, sensible servant to whom the master gives the responsibility of managing his household and feeding his family.

He is a blessed man if when the master shows up he's doing his job.

It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.

Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward.

But if he says to himself, "The master is certainly taking his time,' begins maltreating the servants and maids, throws parties for his friends, and gets drunk,

I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has.

I assure you, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns.

the master will walk in when he least expects it, give him the thrashing of his life, and put him back in the kitchen peeling potatoes.

But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk.

But if that servant says in his heart, "My master is delaying his coming,' and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk,

But if the servant thinks, 'My master won't be back for a while,' and begins oppressing the other servants, partying, and getting drunk--

"The servant who knows what his master wants and ignores it, or insolently does whatever he pleases, will be thoroughly thrashed.

The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

well, the master will return unannounced and unexpected. He will tear the servant apart and banish him with the unfaithful.

But if he does a poor job through ignorance, he'll get off with a slap on the hand. Great gifts mean great responsibilities; greater gifts, greater responsibilities!

"That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.

And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it.

"I've come to start a fire on this earth--how I wish it were blazing right now!

But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

"But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given.

Do you think I came to smooth things over and make everything nice? Not so. I've come to disrupt and confront!

There is a terrible baptism ahead of me, and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished.

From now on, when you find five in a house, it will be--Three against two, and two against three;

Father against son, and son against father; Mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; Mother-in-law against bride, and bride against mother-in-law."

From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.

And when the wind comes out of the south, you say, "This'll be a hot one'--and you're right.

Then He also said to the multitudes, "Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, "A shower is coming'; and so it is.

Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said, "When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say, 'Here comes a shower.' And you are right.

Frauds! You know how to tell a change in the weather, so don't tell me you can't tell a change in the season, the God-season we're in right now.

And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.

And when you see the south wind blow, you say, "There will be hot weather'; and there is.

When the south wind blows, you say, 'Today will be a scorcher.' And it is.

"You don't have to be a genius to understand these things. Just use your common sense,

the kind you'd use if, while being taken to court, you decided to settle up with your accuser on the way, knowing that if the case went to the judge you'd probably go to jail

"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?

"Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right?

"Why can't you decide for yourselves what is right?

and pay every last penny of the fine. That's the kind of decision I'm asking you to make."

As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled to him on the way, or he may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

If you are on the way to court and you meet your accuser, try to settle the matter before it reaches the judge, or you may be sentenced and handed over to an officer and thrown in jail.
