The LORD said to Moses on Mount Sinai,

And the LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying,

While Moses was on Mount Sinai, the LORD said to him,

Lev.25.2

"Speak to the People of Israel. Tell them: When you enter the land which I am going to give you, the land will observe a Sabbath to GOD.

"Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.

Lev.25.2

"Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: "When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the LORD.

"Give these instructions to the Israelites: When you have entered the land I am giving you as an inheritance, the land itself must observe a Sabbath to the LORD every seventh year.

Sow your fields, prune your vineyards, and take in your harvests for six years.

Lev.25.3

For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops.

Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit;

For six years you may plant your fields and prune your vineyards and harvest your crops,

But the seventh year the land will take a Sabbath of complete and total rest, a Sabbath to GOD; you will not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.

Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you-for yourself, your manservant and maidservant, and the hired worker and temporary resident who live among you,

And the sabbath produce of the land shall be food for you: for you, your male and female servants, your hired man, and the stranger who dwells with you,

But you, your male and female slaves, your hired servants, and any foreigners who live with you may eat the produce that grows naturally during the Sabbath year.

and, of course, also your livestock and the wild animals in the land can eat from it. Whatever the land volunteers of itself can be eaten.

Then sound loud blasts on the ram's horn on the tenth day of the seventh month, the Day of Atonement. Sound the ram's horn all over the land.

Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land.

Then on the Day of Atonement of the fiftieth year, blow the trumpets loud and long throughout the land.

Sanctify the fiftieth year; make it a holy year. Proclaim freedom all over the land to everyone who lives in it--a Jubilee for you: Each person will go back to his family's property and reunite with his extended family.

And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor's hand, you shall not oppress one another.

"When you make an agreement with a neighbor to buy or sell property, you must never take advantage of each other.

Calculate the purchase price on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. He is obliged to set the sale price on the basis of the number of harvests remaining until the next Jubilee.

You are to buy from your countryman on the basis of the number of years since the Jubilee. And he is to sell to you on the basis of the number of years left for harvesting crops.

According to the number of years after the Jubilee you shall buy from your neighbor, and according to the number of years of crops he shall sell to you.

When you buy land from your neighbor, the price of the land should be based on the number of years since the last jubilee. The seller will charge you only for the crop years left until the next Year of Jubilee.

The more years left, the more money; you can raise the price. But the fewer years left, the less money; decrease the price. What you are buying and selling in fact is the number of crops you're going to harvest.

When the years are many, you are to increase the price, and when the years are few, you are to decrease the price, because what he is really selling you is the number of crops.

According to the multitude of years you shall increase its price, and according to the fewer number of years you shall diminish its price; for he sells to you according to the number of the years of the crops.

The more the years, the higher the price; the fewer the years, the lower the price. After all, the person selling the land is actually selling you a certain number of harvests.

Don't cheat each other. Fear your God. I am GOD, your God.

Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.

Therefore you shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God; for I am the LORD your God.

"Keep my decrees and observe my laws and you will live secure in the land.

"'Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land.

"So you shall observe My statutes and keep My judgments, and perform them; and you will dwell in the land in safety.

"If you want to live securely in the land, keep my laws and obey my regulations.

Lev.25.19

The land will yield its fruit; you will have all you can eat and will live safe and secure.

Lev.25.19

Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety.

Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill, and dwell there in safety.

Then the land will yield bumper crops, and you will eat your fill and live securely in it.

Do I hear you ask, "What are we going to eat in the seventh year if we don't plant or harvest?'

You may ask, "What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?"

"And if you say, "What shall we eat in the seventh year, since we shall not sow nor gather in our produce?"

Lev.25.20

But you might ask, `What will we eat during the seventh year, since we are not allowed to plant or harvest crops that year?'

Lev.25.21

I assure you, I will send such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.

Then I will command My blessing on you in the sixth year, and it will bring forth produce enough for three years.

The answer is, `I will order my blessing for you in the sixth year, so the land will produce a bumper crop, enough to support you for three years.

While you plant in the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and continue until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.

And you shall sow in the eighth year, and eat old produce until the ninth year; until its produce comes in, you shall eat of the old harvest.

As you plant the seed in the eighth year, you will still be eating the produce of the previous year. In fact, you will eat from the old crop until the new harvest comes in the ninth year.'

"The land cannot be sold permanently because the land is mine and you are foreigners--you're my tenants.

"'The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants.

"The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with Me.

And remember, the land must never be sold on a permanent basis because it really belongs to me. You are only foreigners and tenants living with me.

You must provide for the right of redemption for any of the land that you own.

Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.

And in all the land of your possession you shall grant redemption of the land.

"With every sale of land there must be a stipulation that the land can be redeemed at any time.

"If one of your brothers becomes poor and has to sell any of his land, his nearest relative is to come and buy back what his brother sold.

"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells some of his property, his nearest relative is to come and redeem what his countryman has sold.

"If one of your brethren becomes poor, and has sold some of his possession, and if his redeeming relative comes to redeem it, then he may redeem what his brother sold.

If any of your Israelite relatives go bankrupt and are forced to sell some inherited land, then a close relative, a kinsman redeemer, may buy it back for them.

If a man has no one to redeem it but he later prospers and earns enough for its redemption,

If, however, a man has no one to redeem it for him but he himself prospers and acquires sufficient means to redeem it,

Or if the man has no one to redeem it, but he himself becomes able to redeem it,

If there is no one to redeem the land but the person who sold it manages to get enough money to buy it back,

Lev.25.27

he is to calculate the value since he sold it and refund the balance to the man to whom he sold it; he can then go back to his own land.

If he doesn't get together enough money to repay him, what he sold remains in the possession of the buyer until the year of Jubilee. In the Jubilee it will be returned and he can go back and live on his land.

But if he does not acquire the means to repay him, what he sold will remain in the possession of the buyer until the Year of Jubilee. It will be returned in the Jubilee, and he can then go back to his property.

But if he is not able to have it restored to himself, then what was sold shall remain in the hand of him who bought it until the Year of Jubilee; and in the Jubilee it shall be released, and he shall return to his possession.

"If a man sells a house in a walled city, he retains the right to buy it back for a full year after the sale. At any time during that year he can redeem it.

But if it is not redeemed before the full year has passed, it becomes the permanent possession of the buyer and his descendants. It is not returned in the Jubilee.

If it is not redeemed before a full year has passed, the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to the buyer and his descendants. It is not to be returned in the Jubilee.

But if it is not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house in the walled city shall belong permanently to him who bought it, throughout his generations. It shall not be released in the Jubilee.

But if it is not redeemed within a year, then the house within the walled city will become the permanent property of the buyer. It will not be returned to the original owner in the Year of Jubilee.

However, houses in unwalled villages are treated the same as fields. They can be redeemed and have to be returned at the Jubilee.

But houses in villages without walls around them are to be considered as open country. They can be redeemed, and they are to be returned in the Jubilee.

However the houses of villages which have no wall around them shall be counted as the fields of the country. They may be redeemed, and they shall be released in the Jubilee.

But a house in a village--a settlement without fortified walls--will be treated like property in the open fields. Such a house may be redeemed at any time and must be returned to the original owner in the Year of Jubilee.

"As to the Levitical cities, houses in the cities owned by the Levites are always subject to redemption.

"'The Levites always have the right to redeem their houses in the Levitical towns, which they possess.

Nevertheless the cities of the Levites, and the houses in the cities of their possession, the Levites may redeem at any time.

"The Levites always have the right to redeem any house they have sold within the cities belonging to them.

Levitical property is always redeemable if it is sold in a town that they hold and reverts to them in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the People of Israel.

So the property of the Levites is redeemable-that is, a house sold in any town they hold-and is to be returned in the Jubilee, because the houses in the towns of the Levites are their property among the Israelites.

And if a man purchases a house from the Levites, then the house that was sold in the city of his possession shall be released in the Jubilee; for the houses in the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.

And any property that can be redeemed by the Levites--all houses within the Levitical cities--must be returned in the Year of Jubilee. After all, the cities reserved for the Levites are the only property they own in all Israel.

"'If one of your countrymen becomes poor and is unable to support himself among you, help him as you would an alien or a temporary resident, so he can continue to live among you.

"If one of your brethren becomes poor, and falls into poverty among you, then you shall help him, like a stranger or a sojourner, that he may live with you.

"If any of your Israelite relatives fall into poverty and cannot support themselves, support them as you would a resident foreigner and allow them to live with you.

Don't gouge him with interest charges; out of reverence for your God help your brother to continue to live with you in the neighborhood.

Do not take interest of any kind from him, but fear your God, so that your countryman may continue to live among you.

Take no usury or interest from him; but fear your God, that your brother may live with you.

Do not demand an advance or charge interest on the money you lend them. Instead, show your fear of God by letting them live with you as your relatives.

Don't take advantage of his plight by running up big interest charges on his loans, and don't give him food for profit.

You must not lend him money at interest or sell him food at a profit.

You shall not lend him your money for usury, nor lend him your food at a profit.

Remember, do not charge your relatives interest on anything you lend them, whether money or food.

You may also buy the children of foreign workers who are living among you temporarily and from their clans which are living among you and have been born in your land. They become your property.

You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.

Moreover you may buy the children of the strangers who dwell among you, and their families who are with you, which they beget in your land; and they shall become your property.

You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property,

You may will them to your children as property and make them slaves for life. But you must not tyrannize your brother Israelites.

What happens then is that he and his owner count out the time from the year he sold himself to the year of Jubilee; the buy-back price is set according to the wages of a hired hand for that number of years.

He and his buyer are to count the time from the year he sold himself up to the Year of Jubilee. The price for his release is to be based on the rate paid to a hired man for that number of years.

Thus he shall reckon with him who bought him: The price of his release shall be according to the number of years, from the year that he was sold to him until the Year of Jubilee; it shall be according to the time of a hired servant for him.

If many years remain before the Jubilee, he must pay back a larger share of his purchase price,
