Walking down the street, Jesus saw a man blind from birth.

As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth.

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.

John.9.2

His disciples asked, "Rabbi, who sinned: this man or his parents, causing him to be born blind?"

John.9.2

His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

John.9.2

And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

John.9.2

"Teacher," his disciples asked him, "why was this man born blind? Was it a result of his own sins or those of his parents?"

John.9.3

Jesus said, "You're asking the wrong question. You're looking for someone to blame. There is no such cause-effect here. Look instead for what God can do.

John.9.3

"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.

John.9.3

Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

John.9.3

"It was not because of his sins or his parents' sins," Jesus answered. "He was born blind so the power of God could be seen in him.

John.9.4

We need to be energetically at work for the One who sent me here, working while the sun shines. When night falls, the workday is over.

John.9.4

As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.

I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.

All of us must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent me, because there is little time left before the night falls and all work comes to an end.

For as long as I am in the world, there is plenty of light. I am the world's Light."

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

He said this and then spit in the dust, made a clay paste with the saliva, rubbed the paste on the blind man's eyes,

Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes.

When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.

Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and smoothed the mud over the blind man's eyes.

and said, "Go, wash at the Pool of Siloam" (Siloam means "Sent"). The man went and washed--and saw.

"Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

And He said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

Soon the town was buzzing. His relatives and those who year after year had seen him as a blind man begging were saying, "Why, isn't this the man we knew, who sat here and begged?"

His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?"

John.9.8

Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, "Is not this he who sat and begged?"

His neighbors and others who knew him as a blind beggar asked each other, "Is this the same man--that beggar?"

John.9.9

Others said, "It's him all right!" But others objected, "It's not the same man at all. It just looks like him." He said, "It's me, the very one."

John.9.9

Some claimed that he was. Others said, "No, he only looks like him." But he himself insisted, "I am the man."

John.9.9

Some said, "This is he." Others said, "He is like him." He said, "I am he."

Some said he was, and others said, "No, but he surely looks like him!" And the beggar kept saying, "I am the same man!"

They said, "How did your eyes get opened?"

John.9.10

"How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded.

John.9.10

Therefore they said to him, "How were your eyes opened?"

John.9.10

They asked, "Who healed you? What happened?"

John.9.11

"A man named Jesus made a paste and rubbed it on my eyes and told me, "Go to Siloam and wash.' I did what he said. When I washed, I saw."

John.9.11

He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see."

John.9.11

He answered and said, "A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, "Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight."

He told them, "The man they call Jesus made mud and smoothed it over my eyes and told me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash off the mud.' I went and washed, and now I can see!"

"So where is he?I don't know."

John.9.12

"Where is this man?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said.

John.9.12

Then they said to him, "Where is He?" He said, "I do not know."

John.9.12

"Where is he now?" they asked. "I don't know," he replied.

They marched the man to the Pharisees.

John.9.13

They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.

John.9.13

They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees.

John.9.13

Then they took the man to the Pharisees.

John.9.14

This day when Jesus made the paste and healed his blindness was the Sabbath.

John.9.14

Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath.

John.9.14

Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.

John.9.14

Now as it happened, Jesus had healed the man on a Sabbath.

The Pharisees grilled him again on how he had come to see. He said, "He put a clay paste on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see."

John.9.15

Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see."

John.9.15

Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."

John.9.15

The Pharisees asked the man all about it. So he told them, "He smoothed the mud over my eyes, and when it was washed away, I could see!"

John.9.16

Some of the Pharisees said, "Obviously, this man can't be from God. He doesn't keep the Sabbath." Others countered, "How can a bad man do miraculous, God-revealing things like this?" There was a split in their ranks.

John.9.16

Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others asked, "How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?" So they were divided.

John.9.16

Therefore some of the Pharisees said, "This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them.

John.9.16

Some of the Pharisees said, "This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath." Others said, "But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?" So there was a deep division of opinion among them.

John.9.17

They came back at the blind man, "You're the expert. He opened your eyes. What do you say about him?" He said, "He is a prophet."

John.9.17

Finally they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened." The man replied, "He is a prophet."

John.9.17

They said to the blind man again, "What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."

John.9.17

Then the Pharisees once again questioned the man who had been blind and demanded, "This man who opened your eyes--who do you say he is?" The man replied, "I think he must be a prophet."

John.9.18

The Jews didn't believe it, didn't believe the man was blind to begin with. So they called the parents of the man now bright-eyed with sight.

John.9.18

The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents.

John.9.18

But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight.

John.9.18

The Jewish leaders wouldn't believe he had been blind, so they called in his parents.

John.9.19

They asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? So how is it that he now sees?"

John.9.19

"Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?"

John.9.19

And they asked them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"

John.9.19

They asked them, "Is this your son? Was he born blind? If so, how can he see?"

John.9.20

His parents said, "We know he is our son, and we know he was born blind.

John.9.20

"We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind.

John.9.20

His parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

John.9.20

His parents replied, "We know this is our son and that he was born blind,

John.9.21

But we don't know how he came to see--haven't a clue about who opened his eyes. Why don't you ask him? He's a grown man and can speak for himself."

John.9.21

But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself."

John.9.21

but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself."

but we don't know how he can see or who healed him. He is old enough to speak for himself. Ask him."

(His parents were talking like this because they were intimidated by the Jewish leaders, who had already decided that anyone who took a stand that this was the Messiah would be kicked out of the meeting place.

John.9.22

His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.

John.9.22

His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

John.9.22

They said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.

John.9.23

That's why his parents said, "Ask him. He's a grown man.")

John.9.23

That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."

John.9.23

Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."

John.9.23

That's why they said, "He is old enough to speak for himself. Ask him."

John.9.24

They called the man back a second time--the man who had been blind--and told him, "Give credit to God. We know this man is an impostor."

John.9.24

A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God, "they said. "We know this man is a sinner."

John.9.24

So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner."

John.9.24

So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, "Give glory to God by telling the truth, because we know Jesus is a sinner."

John.9.25

He replied, "I know nothing about that one way or the other. But I know one thing for sure: I was blind... I now see."

John.9.25

He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!"

John.9.25

He answered and said, "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see."

John.9.25

"I don't know whether he is a sinner," the man replied. "But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!"

John.9.26

They said, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

John.9.26

Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

Then they said to him again, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"

John.9.26

"But what did he do?" they asked. "How did he heal you?"

John.9.27

"I've told you over and over and you haven't listened. Why do you want to hear it again? Are you so eager to become his disciples?"

John.9.27

He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"

John.9.27

He answered them, "I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?"

John.9.27

"Look!" the man exclaimed. "I told you once. Didn't you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"

John.9.28

With that they jumped all over him. "You might be a disciple of that man, but we're disciples of Moses.

John.9.28

Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses!

John.9.28

Then they reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are Moses' disciples.

John.9.28

Then they cursed him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

John.9.29

We know for sure that God spoke to Moses, but we have no idea where this man even comes from."

John.9.29

We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from."

John.9.29

We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from."

We know God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know anything about him."

The man replied, "This is amazing! You claim to know nothing about him, but the fact is, he opened my eyes!

The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.

John.9.30

The man answered and said to them, "Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes!

John.9.30

"Why, that's very strange!" the man replied. "He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know anything about him!

John.9.31

It's well known that God isn't at the beck and call of sinners, but listens carefully to anyone who lives in reverence and does his will.

John.9.31

We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will.

John.9.31

Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.

John.9.31

Well, God doesn't listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.

John.9.32

That someone opened the eyes of a man born blind has never been heard of--ever.

John.9.32

Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.

John.9.32

Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind.

John.9.32

Never since the world began has anyone been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.

John.9.33

If this man didn't come from God, he wouldn't be able to do anything."

John.9.33

If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."

John.9.33

If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing."

John.9.33

If this man were not from God, he couldn't do it."

John.9.34

They said, "You're nothing but dirt! How dare you take that tone with us!" Then they threw him out in the street.

John.9.34

To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out.

John.9.34

They answered and said to him, "You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?" And they cast him out.

John.9.34

"You were born in sin!" they answered. "Are you trying to teach us?" And they threw him out of the synagogue.
