John.18.1

Jesus, having prayed this prayer, left with his disciples and crossed over the brook Kidron at a place where there was a garden. He and his disciples entered it.

When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it.

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.

After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees.

Judas, his betrayer, knew the place because Jesus and his disciples went there often.

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

So Judas led the way to the garden, and the Roman soldiers and police sent by the high priests and Pharisees followed. They arrived there with lanterns and torches and swords.

So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a battalion of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

Jesus, knowing by now everything that was coming down on him, went out and met them. He said, "Who are you after?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?"

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom are you seeking?"

Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him. Stepping forward to meet them, he asked, "Whom are you looking for?"

He said, "That's me." The soldiers recoiled, totally taken aback. Judas, his betrayer, stood out like a sore thumb.

"Jesus of Nazareth," they replied.

John.18.5

They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.

"Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. Judas was standing there with them when Jesus identified himself.

Jesus asked again, "Who are you after?" They answered, "Jesus the Nazarene."

"I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.

Now when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.

And as he said, "I am he," they all fell backward to the ground!

"I told you," said Jesus, "that's me. I'm the one. So if it's me you're after, let these others go."

Again he asked them, "Who is it you want?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

Once more he asked them, "Whom are you searching for?" And again they replied, "Jesus of Nazareth."

(This validated the words in his prayer, "I didn't lose one of those you gave.")

"I told you that I am he," Jesus answered. "If you are looking for me, then let these men go."

Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,"

"I told you that I am he," Jesus said. "And since I am the one you want, let these others go."

Just then Simon Peter, who was carrying a sword, pulled it from its sheath and struck the Chief Priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. Malchus was the servant's name.

This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me."

that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none."

He did this to fulfill his own statement: "I have not lost a single one of those you gave me."

Jesus ordered Peter, "Put back your sword. Do you think for a minute I'm not going to drink this cup the Father gave me?"

Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)

Then the Roman soldiers under their commander, joined by the Jewish police, seized Jesus and tied him up.

Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"

So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"

John.18.11

But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup the Father has given me?"

John.18.12

They took him first to Annas, father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the Chief Priest that year.

John.18.12

Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him

Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.

So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied him up.

It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.

and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.

And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.

Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That other disciple was known to the Chief Priest, and so he went in with Jesus to the Chief Priest's courtyard.

Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be good if one man died for the people.

Peter had to stay outside. Then the other disciple went out, spoke to the doorkeeper, and got Peter in.

Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard,

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

Simon Peter followed along behind, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the courtyard with Jesus.

The young woman who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "Aren't you one of this man's disciples?" He said, "No, I'm not."

but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.

Peter stood outside the gate. Then the other disciple spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in.

The servants and police had made a fire because of the cold and were huddled there warming themselves. Peter stood with them, trying to get warm.

"You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not."

John.18.17

Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."

John.18.17

The woman asked Peter, "Aren't you one of Jesus' disciples?No," he said, "I am not."

Annas interrogated Jesus regarding his disciples and his teaching.

It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

John.18.18

Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

The guards and the household servants were standing around a charcoal fire they had made because it was cold. And Peter stood there with them, warming himself.

Jesus answered, "I've spoken openly in public. I've taught regularly in meeting places and the Temple, where the Jews all come together. Everything has been out in the open. I've said nothing in secret.

Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

John.18.19

Inside, the high priest began asking Jesus about his followers and what he had been teaching them.

John.18.20

So why are you treating me like a conspirator? Question those who have been listening to me. They know well what I have said. My teachings have all been aboveboard."

John.18.20

"I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.

John.18.20

Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.

John.18.20

Jesus replied, "What I teach is widely known, because I have preached regularly in the synagogues and the Temple. I have been heard by people everywhere, and I teach nothing in private that I have not said in public.

John.18.21

When he said this, one of the policemen standing there slapped Jesus across the face, saying, "How dare you speak to the Chief Priest like that!"

John.18.21

Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said."

John.18.21

Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said."

John.18.21

Why are you asking me this question? Ask those who heard me. They know what I said."

John.18.22

Jesus replied, "If I've said something wrong, prove it. But if I've spoken the plain truth, why this slapping around?"

John.18.22

When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face. "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" he demanded.

John.18.22

And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"

John.18.22

One of the Temple guards standing there struck Jesus on the face. "Is that the way to answer the high priest?" he demanded.

John.18.23

Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to the Chief Priest Caiaphas.

John.18.23

"If I said something wrong," Jesus replied, "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?"

John.18.23

Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"

John.18.23

Jesus replied, "If I said anything wrong, you must give evidence for it. Should you hit a man for telling the truth?"

John.18.24

Meanwhile, Simon Peter was back at the fire, still trying to get warm. The others there said to him, "Aren't you one of his disciples?" He denied it, "Not me."

Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.

Then Annas bound Jesus and sent him to Caiaphas, the high priest.
