That was a turnaround for many of the Jews who were with Mary. They saw what Jesus did, and believed in him.

Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together to discuss the situation. "What are we going to do?" they asked each other. "This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.

If we let him go on, pretty soon everyone will be believing in him and the Romans will come and remove what little power and privilege we still have."

"What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."

Then one of them--it was Caiaphas, the designated Chief Priest that year--spoke up, "Don't you know anything?

He didn't say this of his own accord, but as Chief Priest that year he unwittingly prophesied that Jesus was about to die sacrificially for the nation,

Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

This prophecy that Jesus should die for the entire nation came from Caiaphas in his position as high priest. He didn't think of it himself; he was inspired to say it.

and not only for the nation but so that all God's exile-scattered children might be gathered together into one people.

It was a prediction that Jesus' death would be not for Israel only, but for the gathering together of all the children of God scattered around the world.

From that day on, they plotted to kill him.

So from that time on the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus' death.

So Jesus no longer went out in public among the Jews. He withdrew into the country bordering the desert to a town called Ephraim and secluded himself there with his disciples.

Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

The Jewish Passover was coming up. Crowds of people were making their way from the country up to Jerusalem to get themselves ready for the Feast.

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.

And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

It was now almost time for the celebration of Passover, and many people from the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the cleansing ceremony before the Passover began.

They were curious about Jesus. There was a lot of talk of him among those standing around in the Temple: "What do you think? Do you think he'll show up at the Feast or not?"

They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple area they asked one another, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the Feast at all?"

Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, "What do you think--that He will not come to the feast?"

They wanted to see Jesus, and as they talked in the Temple, they asked each other, "What do you think? Will he come for the Passover?"

Meanwhile, the high priests and Pharisees gave out the word that anyone getting wind of him should inform them. They were all set to arrest him.

But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found out where Jesus was, he should report it so that they might arrest him.

Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly announced that anyone seeing Jesus must report him immediately so they could arrest him.

Six days before Passover, Jesus entered Bethany where Lazarus, so recently raised from the dead, was living.

He said this not because he cared two cents about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of their common funds, but also embezzled them.

You always have the poor with you. You don't always have me."

Word got out among the Jews that he was back in town. The people came to take a look, not only at Jesus but also at Lazarus, who had been raised from the dead.

Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead.

When all the people heard of Jesus' arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.

So the high priests plotted to kill Lazarus

Then the leading priests decided to kill Lazarus, too,

because so many of the Jews were going over and believing in Jesus on account of him.

for it was because of him that many of the people had deserted them and believed in Jesus.
