Attention, elder statesmen! Listen closely, everyone, whoever and wherever you are! Have you ever heard of anything like this? Has anything like this ever happened before--ever?

Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your forefathers?

Joel.1.2

Hear this, you elders, And give ear, all you inhabitants of the land! Has anything like this happened in your days, Or even in the days of your fathers?

Joel.1.2

Hear this, you leaders of the people! Everyone listen! In all your history, has anything like this ever happened before?

Joel.1.3

Make sure you tell your children, and your children tell their children, And their children their children. Don't let this message die out.

Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.

Tell your children about it, Let your children tell their children, And their children another generation.

Tell your children about it in the years to come. Pass the awful story down from generation to generation.

What the chewing locust left, the gobbling locust ate; What the gobbling locust left, the munching locust ate; What the munching locust left, the chomping locust ate.

What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other locusts have eaten.

What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten; What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten; And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten.

After the cutting locusts finished eating the crops, the swarming locusts took what was left! After them came the hopping locusts, and then the stripping locusts, too!

Sober up, you drunks! Get in touch with reality--and weep! Your supply of booze is cut off. You're on the wagon, like it or not.

Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine; wail because of the new wine, for it has been snatched from your lips.

Awake, you drunkards, and weep; And wail, all you drinkers of wine, Because of the new wine, For it has been cut off from your mouth.

Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! All the grapes are ruined, and all your new wine is gone!

My country's being invaded by an army invincible, past numbering, Teeth like those of a lion, fangs like those of a tiger.

A nation has invaded my land, powerful and without number; it has the teeth of a lion, the fangs of a lioness.

For a nation has come up against My land, Strong, and without number; His teeth are the teeth of a lion, And he has the fangs of a fierce lion.

A vast army of locusts has invaded my land. It is a terrible army, too numerous to count! Its teeth are as sharp as the teeth of lions!

It has ruined my vineyards, stripped my orchards, And clear-cut the country. The landscape's a moonscape.

It has laid waste my vines and ruined my fig trees. It has stripped off their bark and thrown it away, leaving their branches white.

He has laid waste My vine, And ruined My fig tree; He has stripped it bare and thrown it away; Its branches are made white.

They have destroyed my grapevines and fig trees, stripping their bark and leaving the branches white and bare.

Weep like a young virgin dressed in black, mourning the loss of her fianc�.

Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth For the husband of her youth.

Weep with sorrow, as a virgin weeps when her fiance has died.

Without grain and grapes, worship has been brought to a standstill in the Sanctuary of GOD. The priests are at a loss. GOD's ministers don't know what to do.

Grain offerings and drink offerings are cut off from the house of the LORD. The priests are in mourning, those who minister before the LORD.

The grain offering and the drink offering Have been cut off from the house of the LORD; The priests mourn, who minister to the LORD.

There is no grain or wine to offer at the Temple of the LORD. The priests are mourning because there are no offerings. Listen to the weeping of these ministers of the LORD!

The fields are sterile. The very ground grieves. The wheat fields are lifeless, vineyards dried up, olive oil gone.

The fields are ruined, the ground is dried up; the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil fails.

The field is wasted, The land mourns; For the grain is ruined, The new wine is dried up, The oil fails.

The fields are ruined and empty of crops. The grain, the wine, and the olive oil are gone.

Dirt farmers, despair! Grape growers, wring your hands! Lament the loss of wheat and barley. All crops have failed.

Despair, you farmers, wail, you vine growers; grieve for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field is destroyed.

Be ashamed, you farmers, Wail, you vinedressers, For the wheat and the barley; Because the harvest of the field has perished.

Despair, all you farmers! Wail, all you vine growers! Weep, because the wheat and barley--yes, all the field crops--are ruined.

Vineyards dried up, fig trees withered, Pomegranates, date palms, and apple trees--deadwood everywhere! And joy is dried up and withered in the hearts of the people.

The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree- all the trees of the field-are dried up. Surely the joy of mankind is withered away.

The grapevines and the fig trees have all withered. The pomegranate trees, palm trees, and apple trees--yes, all the fruit trees--have dried up. All joy has dried up with them.

And also you priests, put on your robes and join the outcry. You who lead people in worship, lead them in lament. Spend the night dressed in gunnysacks, you servants of my God. Nothing's going on in the place of worship, no offerings, no prayers--nothing.

Put on sackcloth, O priests, and mourn; wail, you who minister before the altar. Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you who minister before my God; for the grain offerings and drink offerings are withheld from the house of your God.

Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; Wail, you who minister before the altar; Come, lie all night in sackcloth, You who minister to my God; For the grain offering and the drink offering Are withheld from the house of your God.

Dress yourselves in sackcloth, you priests! Wail, you who serve before the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God! There is no grain or wine to offer at the Temple of your God.

Declare a holy fast, call a special meeting, get the leaders together, Round up everyone in the country. Get them into GOD's Sanctuary for serious prayer to GOD.

Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.

Announce a time of fasting; call the people together for a solemn meeting. Bring the leaders and all the people into the Temple of the LORD your God, and cry out to him there.

What a day! Doomsday! GOD's Judgment Day has come. The Strong God has arrived. This is serious business!

Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.

The day of the LORD is on the way, the day when destruction comes from the Almighty. How terrible that day will be!

Food is just a memory at our tables, as are joy and singing from God's Sanctuary.

Has not the food been cut off before our very eyes- joy and gladness from the house of our God?

We watch as our food disappears before our very eyes. There are no joyful celebrations in the house of our God.

The seeds in the field are dead, barns deserted, Grain silos abandoned. Who needs them? The crops have failed!

The seeds are shriveled beneath the clods. The storehouses are in ruins, the granaries have been broken down, for the grain has dried up.

The seed shrivels under the clods, Storehouses are in shambles; Barns are broken down, For the grain has withered.

The seeds die in the parched ground, and the grain crops fail. The barns and granaries stand empty and abandoned.

The farm animals groan--oh, how they groan! The cattle mill around. There's nothing for them to eat. Not even the sheep find anything.

How the cattle moan! The herds mill about because they have no pasture; even the flocks of sheep are suffering.

How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are restless, Because they have no pasture; Even the flocks of sheep suffer punishment.

How the animals moan with hunger! The cattle wander about confused because there is no pasture for them. The sheep bleat in misery.

GOD! I pray, I cry out to you! The fields are burning up, The country is a dust bowl, forest and prairie fires rage unchecked.

To you, O LORD, I call, for fire has devoured the open pastures and flames have burned up all the trees of the field.

Wild animals, dying of thirst, look to you for a drink. Springs and streams are dried up. The whole country is burning up.

The beasts of the field also cry out to You, For the water brooks are dried up, And fire has devoured the open pastures.

Blow the ram's horn trumpet in Zion! Trumpet the alarm on my holy mountain! Shake the country up! GOD's Judgment's on its way--the Day's almost here!

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming. It is close at hand-

Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem! Sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let everyone tremble in fear because the day of the LORD is upon us.

A black day! A Doomsday! Clouds with no silver lining! Like dawn light moving over the mountains, a huge army is coming. There's never been anything like it and never will be again.

a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes, such as never was of old nor ever will be in ages to come.

A day of darkness and gloominess, A day of clouds and thick darkness, Like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. A people come, great and strong, The like of whom has never been; Nor will there ever be any such after them, Even for many successive generations.

It is a day of darkness and gloom, a day of thick clouds and deep blackness. Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains, a mighty army appears! How great and powerful they are! The likes of them have not been seen before and never will be seen again.

Wildfire burns everything before this army and fire licks up everything in its wake. Before it arrives, the country is like the Garden of Eden. When it leaves, it is Death Valley. Nothing escapes unscathed.

Before them fire devours, behind them a flame blazes. Before them the land is like the garden of Eden, behind them, a desert waste- nothing escapes them.

A fire devours before them, And behind them a flame burns; The land is like the Garden of Eden before them, And behind them a desolate wilderness; Surely nothing shall escape them.

Fire burns in front of them and follows them in every direction! Ahead of them the land lies as fair as the Garden of Eden in all its beauty. Behind them is nothing but desolation; not one thing escapes.

The locust army seems all horses--galloping horses, an army of horses.

They have the appearance of horses; they gallop along like cavalry.

Joel.2.4

Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like swift steeds, so they run.

They look like tiny horses, and they run as fast.

Joel.2.5

It sounds like thunder leaping on mountain ridges, Or like the roar of wildfire through grass and brush, Or like an invincible army shouting for blood, ready to fight, straining at the bit.

With a noise like that of chariots they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle.

With a noise like chariots Over mountaintops they leap, Like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble, Like a strong people set in battle array.

Look at them as they leap along the mountaintops! Listen to the noise they make--like the rumbling of chariots, like the roar of a fire sweeping across a field, or like a mighty army moving into battle.

At the sight of this army, the people panic, faces white with terror.

At the sight of them, nations are in anguish; every face turns pale.

Before them the people writhe in pain; All faces are drained of color.

Fear grips all the people; every face grows pale with fright.

The invaders charge. They climb barricades. Nothing stops them. Each soldier does what he's told, so disciplined, so determined.

They charge like warriors; they scale walls like soldiers. They all march in line, not swerving from their course.

They run like mighty men, They climb the wall like men of war; Every one marches in formation, And they do not break ranks.

The attackers march like warriors and scale city walls like trained soldiers. Straight forward they march, never breaking rank.

Joel.2.8

They don't get in each other's way. Each one knows his job and does it. Undaunted and fearless, unswerving, unstoppable.

They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plunge through defenses without breaking ranks.

They do not push one another; Every one marches in his own column. Though they lunge between the weapons, They are not cut down.

They never jostle each other; each moves in exactly the right place. They lunge through the gaps, and no weapon can stop them.

They storm the city, swarm its defenses, Loot the houses, breaking down doors, smashing windows.

They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses; like thieves they enter through the windows.

They run to and fro in the city, They run on the wall; They climb into the houses, They enter at the windows like a thief.

They swarm over the city and run along its walls. They enter all the houses, climbing like thieves through the windows.

They arrive like an earthquake, sweep through like a tornado. Sun and moon turn out their lights, stars black out.

Before them the earth shakes, the sky trembles, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.

The earth quakes before them, The heavens tremble; The sun and moon grow dark, And the stars diminish their brightness.

The earth quakes as they advance, and the heavens tremble. The sun and moon grow dark, and the stars no longer shine.

Joel.2.11

GOD himself bellows in thunder as he commands his forces. Look at the size of that army! And the strength of those who obey him! GOD's Judgment Day--great and terrible. Who can possibly survive this?

The LORD thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the LORD is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?

The LORD gives voice before His army, For His camp is very great; For strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; Who can endure it?

Joel.2.11

The LORD leads them with a shout! This is his mighty army, and they follow his orders. The day of the LORD is an awesome, terrible thing. Who can endure it?

Joel.2.12

But there's also this, it's not too late--GOD's personal Message!- "Come back to me and really mean it! Come fasting and weeping, sorry for your sins!"

"Even now," declares the LORD, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."

"Now, therefore," says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning."

That is why the LORD says, "Turn to me now, while there is time! Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning.

Change your life, not just your clothes. Come back to GOD, your God. And here's why: God is kind and merciful. He takes a deep breath, puts up with a lot, This most patient God, extravagant in love, always ready to cancel catastrophe.

Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.

Don't tear your clothing in your grief; instead, tear your hearts." Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful. He is not easily angered. He is filled with kindness and is eager not to punish you.

Who knows? Maybe he'll do it now, maybe he'll turn around and show pity. Maybe, when all's said and done, there'll be blessings full and robust for your GOD! [JC]

Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing- grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God.

Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him-- A grain offering and a drink offering For the LORD your God?

Who knows? Perhaps even yet he will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this terrible curse. Perhaps he will give you so much that you will be able to offer grain and wine to the LORD your God as before!

Get everyone there. Consecrate the congregation. Make sure the elders come, but bring in the children, too, even the nursing babies, Even men and women on their honeymoon--interrupt them and get them there.

Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.

Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room.

Bring everyone--the elders, the children, and even the babies. Call the bridegroom from his quarters and the bride from her private room.

Between Sanctuary entrance and altar, let the priests, GOD's servants, weep tears of repentance. Let them intercede: "Have mercy, GOD, on your people! Don't abandon your heritage to contempt. Don't let the pagans take over and rule them and sneer, "And so where is this God of theirs?'" [JC]

Let the priests, who minister before the LORD, weep between the temple porch and the altar. Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'"

Let the priests, who minister to the LORD, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, "Where is their God?"'

The priests, who minister in the LORD's presence, will stand between the people and the altar, weeping. Let them pray, "Spare your people, LORD! They belong to you, so don't let them become an object of mockery. Don't let their name become a proverb of unbelieving foreigners who say, `Where is the God of Israel? He must be helpless!'"

So, my dear Christian friends, companions in following this call to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He's the centerpiece of everything we believe,

Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.

faithful in everything God gave him to do. Moses was also faithful,

He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house.

who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.

For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully and was entrusted with God's entire house.

but Jesus gets far more honor. A builder is more valuable than a building any day.

Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.

For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house.

But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a fine house deserves more praise than the house itself.

Every house has a builder, but the Builder behind them all is God.

For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.

For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.

For every house has a builder, but God is the one who made everything.

Moses did a good job in God's house, but it was all servant work, getting things ready for what was to come.

Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future.

And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward,

Moses was certainly faithful in God's house, but only as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later.

Heb.3.6

Christ as Son is in charge of the house. Now, if we can only keep a firm grip on this bold confidence, we're the house!

But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

But Christ, the faithful Son, was in charge of the entire household. And we are God's household, if we keep up our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.

That's why the Holy Spirit says, Today, please listen;

That is why the Holy Spirit says, "Today you must listen to his voice.

don't turn a deaf ear as in "the bitter uprising," that time of wilderness testing!

do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert,

Don't harden your hearts against him as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested God's patience in the wilderness.

Even though they watched me at work for forty years, your ancestors refused to let me do it my way; over and over they tried my patience.

That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.'

Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, "They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.'

So I was angry with them, and I said, 'Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.'

Exasperated, I vowed, "They'll never get where they're going, never be able to sit down and rest."

So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

So I swore in My wrath, "They shall not enter My rest."'

So in my anger I made a vow: 'They will never enter my place of rest.'"

So watch your step, friends. Make sure there's no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God.

See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God.

And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn't it the people who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

And when he swore that they'd never get where they were going, wasn't he talking to the ones who turned a deaf ear?

And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?

And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey?

And to whom was God speaking when he vowed that they would never enter his place of rest? He was speaking to those who disobeyed him.
