"Why do you confuse the issue? Why do you talk without knowing what you're talking about?

"Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?

Pull yourself together, Job! Up on your feet! Stand tall! I have some questions for you, and I want some straight answers.

Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.

Where were you when I created the earth? Tell me, since you know so much!

Do you know how its dimensions were determined and who did the surveying?

What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone

While the morning stars sang in chorus and all the angels shouted praise?

That was me! I wrapped it in soft clouds, and tucked it in safely at night.

and as I clothed it with clouds and thick darkness?

Then I made a playpen for it, a strong playpen so it couldn't run loose,

when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,

For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores.

And said, "Stay here, this is your place. Your wild tantrums are confined to this place.'

when I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'?

When I said, "This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!'

I said, `Thus far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!'

"And have you ever ordered Morning, "Get up!' told Dawn, "Get to work!'

"Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place,

"Have you commanded the morning since your days began, And caused the dawn to know its place,

"Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east?

So you could seize Earth like a blanket and shake out the wicked like cockroaches?

that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?

That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it?

Have you ever told the daylight to spread to the ends of the earth, to bring an end to the night's wickedness?

As the sun brings everything to light, brings out all the colors and shapes,

Job.38.14

The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.

It takes on form like clay under a seal, And stands out like a garment.

Job.38.14

For the features of the earth take shape as the light approaches, and the dawn is robed in red.

Job.38.15

The cover of darkness is snatched from the wicked--they're caught in the very act!

The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken.

From the wicked their light is withheld, And the upraised arm is broken.

The light disturbs the haunts of the wicked, and it stops the arm that is raised in violence.

"Have you ever gotten to the true bottom of things, explored the labyrinthine caves of deep ocean?

"Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?

Job.38.16

"Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?

Job.38.16

"Have you explored the springs from which the seas come? Have you walked about and explored their depths?

Do you know the first thing about death? Do you have one clue regarding death's dark mysteries?

Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?

Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

Do you know where the gates of death are located? Have you seen the gates of utter gloom?

And do you have any idea how large this earth is? Speak up if you have even the beginning of an answer.

Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this.

So you can take them by the hand and lead them home when they get lost?

Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings?

"Have you visited the treasuries of the snow? Have you seen where the hail is made and stored?

The arsenals of hail and snow that I keep in readiness for times of trouble and battle and war?

Who do you suppose carves canyons for the downpours of rain, and charts the route of thunderstorms

Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm,

"Who has divided a channel for the overflowing water, Or a path for the thunderbolt,

"Who created a channel for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning?

That bring water to unvisited fields, deserts no one ever lays eyes on,

to water a land where no man lives, a desert with no one in it,

To cause it to rain on a land where there is no one, A wilderness in which there is no man;

Who makes the rain fall on barren land, in a desert where no one lives?

Drenching the useless wastelands so they're carpeted with wildflowers and grass?

to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass?

And who do you think is the father of rain and dew,

Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs?

Can you bring out Mazzaroth in its season? Or can you guide the Great Bear with its cubs?

Can you ensure the proper sequence of the seasons or guide the constellation of the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?

Do you know the first thing about the sky's constellations and how they affect things on Earth?

Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God's dominion over the earth?

Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?

Do you know the laws of the universe and how God rules the earth?

"Can you get the attention of the clouds, and commission a shower of rain?

"Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water?

"Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That an abundance of water may cover you?

"Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain?

Can you take charge of the lightning bolts and have them report to you for orders?

Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, 'Here we are'?

Can you send out lightnings, that they may go, And say to you, "Here we are!'?

Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct it?

"Who do you think gave weather-wisdom to the ibis, and storm-savvy to the rooster?

Who endowed the heart with wisdom or gave understanding to the mind?

Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?

Who gives intuition and instinct?

Does anyone know enough to number all the clouds or tip over the rain barrels of heaven

Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens

Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

Who is wise enough to count all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven,

When the earth is cracked and dry, the ground baked hard as a brick?

when the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together?

When the dust hardens in clumps, And the clods cling together?

"Can you teach the lioness to stalk her prey and satisfy the appetite of her cubs

They crouch down and bring forth their young; their labor pains are ended.

Her young ones flourish and are soon on their own; they leave and don't come back.

Their young thrive and grow strong in the wilds; they leave and do not return.

Their young ones are healthy, They grow strong with grain; They depart and do not return to them.

Their young grow up in the open fields, then leave their parents and never return.

"Who do you think set the wild donkey free, opened the corral gates and let him go?

"Who let the wild donkey go free? Who untied his ropes?

"Who set the wild donkey free? Who loosed the bonds of the onager,

"Who makes the wild donkey wild?

I gave him the whole wilderness to roam in, the rolling plains and wide-open places.

I gave him the wasteland as his home, the salt flats as his habitat.

Whose home I have made the wilderness, And the barren land his dwelling?

I have placed it in the wilderness; its home is the wasteland.

He laughs at his city cousins, who are harnessed and harried. He's oblivious to the cries of teamsters.

He laughs at the commotion in the town; he does not hear a driver's shout.

He scorns the tumult of the city; He does not heed the shouts of the driver.

It hates the noise of the city, and it has no driver to shout at it.

He grazes freely through the hills, nibbling anything that's green.

He ranges the hills for his pasture and searches for any green thing.

The range of the mountains is his pasture, And he searches after every green thing.

The mountains are its pastureland, where it searches for every blade of grass.

"Will the wild buffalo condescend to serve you, volunteer to spend the night in your barn?

"Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will he stay by your manger at night?

"Will the wild ox be willing to serve you? Will he bed by your manger?

"Will the wild ox consent to being tamed? Will it stay in your stall?

Can you imagine hitching your plow to a buffalo and getting him to till your fields?

Can you hold him to the furrow with a harness? Will he till the valleys behind you?

Can you bind the wild ox in the furrow with ropes? Or will he plow the valleys behind you?

Can you hitch a wild ox to a plow? Will it plow a field for you?

He's hugely strong, yes, but could you trust him, would you dare turn the job over to him?

Will you rely on him for his great strength? Will you leave your heavy work to him?

Will you trust him because his strength is great? Or will you leave your labor to him?

Since it is so strong, can you trust it? Can you go away and trust the ox to do your work?

You wouldn't for a minute depend on him, would you, to do what you said when you said it?

Can you trust him to bring in your grain and gather it to your threshing floor?

Will you trust him to bring home your grain, And gather it to your threshing floor?

Can you rely on it to return, bringing your grain to the threshing floor?

"The ostrich flaps her wings futilely--all those beautiful feathers, but useless!

"The wings of the ostrich flap joyfully, but they cannot compare with the pinions and feathers of the stork.

"The wings of the ostrich wave proudly, But are her wings and pinions like the kindly stork's?

"The ostrich flaps her wings grandly, but they are no match for the feathers of the stork.

She lays her eggs on the hard ground, leaves them there in the dirt, exposed to the weather,

Job.39.14

She lays her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand,

Job.39.14

For she leaves her eggs on the ground, And warms them in the dust;

She lays her eggs on top of the earth, letting them be warmed in the dust.

Not caring that they might get stepped on and cracked or trampled by some wild animal.

unmindful that a foot may crush them, that some wild animal may trample them.

She forgets that a foot may crush them, Or that a wild beast may break them.

Job.39.15

She doesn't worry that a foot might crush them or that wild animals might destroy them.

Job.39.16

She's negligent with her young, as if they weren't even hers. She cares nothing about anything.

She treats her young harshly, as if they were not hers; she cares not that her labor was in vain,

Job.39.16

She treats her young harshly, as though they were not hers; Her labor is in vain, without concern,

She is harsh toward her young, as if they were not her own. She is unconcerned though they die,

She wasn't created very smart, that's for sure, wasn't given her share of good sense.

for God did not endow her with wisdom or give her a share of good sense.

Because God deprived her of wisdom, And did not endow her with understanding.

for God has deprived her of wisdom. He has given her no understanding.

But when she runs, oh, how she runs, laughing, leaving horse and rider in the dust.

Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.

When she lifts herself on high, She scorns the horse and its rider.

But whenever she jumps up to run, she passes the swiftest horse with its rider.

"Are you the one who gave the horse his prowess and adorned him with a shimmering mane?

"Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane?

"Have you given the horse strength? Have you clothed his neck with thunder?

"Have you given the horse its strength or clothed its neck with a flowing mane?

Did you create him to prance proudly and strike terror with his royal snorts?

Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting?

Can you frighten him like a locust? His majestic snorting strikes terror.

Did you give it the ability to leap forward like a locust? Its majestic snorting is something to hear!

He paws the ground fiercely, eager and spirited, then charges into the fray.

He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray.

He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength; He gallops into the clash of arms.

It paws the earth and rejoices in its strength. When it charges to war,

He laughs at danger, fearless, doesn't shy away from the sword.

He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword.

He mocks at fear, and is not frightened; Nor does he turn back from the sword.

it is unafraid. It does not run from the sword.

The banging and clanging of quiver and lance don't faze him.

Job.39.23

The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance.

The quiver rattles against him, The glittering spear and javelin.

The arrows rattle against it, and the spear and javelin flash.

He quivers with excitement, and at the trumpet blast races off at a gallop.

In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.

He devours the distance with fierceness and rage; Nor does he come to a halt because the trumpet has sounded.

Fiercely it paws the ground and rushes forward into battle when the trumpet blows.

Job.39.25

At the sound of the trumpet he neighs mightily, smelling the excitement of battle from a long way off, catching the rolling thunder of the war cries.

Job.39.25

At the blast of the trumpet he snorts, 'Aha!' He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.

Job.39.25

At the blast of the trumpet he says, "Aha!' He smells the battle from afar, The thunder of captains and shouting.

Job.39.25

It snorts at the sound of the bugle. It senses the battle even at a distance. It quivers at the noise of battle and the shout of the captain's commands.

Job.39.26

"Was it through your know how that the hawk learned to fly, soaring effortlessly on thermal updrafts?

Job.39.26

"Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread his wings toward the south?

Job.39.26

"Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, And spread its wings toward the south?

Job.39.26

"Are you the one who makes the hawk soar and spread its wings to the south?

Job.39.27

Did you command the eagle's flight, and teach her to build her nest in the heights,

Job.39.27

Does the eagle soar at your command and build his nest on high?

Job.39.27

Does the eagle mount up at your command, And make its nest on high?

Job.39.27

Is it at your command that the eagle rises to the heights to make its nest?

Job.39.28

Perfectly at home on the high cliff-face, invulnerable on pinnacle and crag?

Job.39.28

He dwells on a cliff and stays there at night; a rocky crag is his stronghold.

Job.39.28

On the rock it dwells and resides, On the crag of the rock and the stronghold.

Job.39.28

It lives on the cliffs, making its home on a distant, rocky crag.

Job.39.29

From her perch she searches for prey, spies it at a great distance.

Job.39.29

From there he seeks out his food; his eyes detect it from afar.

Job.39.29

From there it spies out the prey; Its eyes observe from afar.

Job.39.29

From there it hunts its prey, keeping watch with piercing eyes.

Her young gorge themselves on carrion; wherever there's a roadkill, you'll see her circling."

His young ones feast on blood, and where the slain are, there is he."

Its young ones suck up blood; And where the slain are, there it is."

Its nestlings gulp down blood, for it feeds on the carcass of the slaughtered."

"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!"

"Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? He who rebukes God, let him answer it."

"Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God's critic, but do you have the answers?"

So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near--at the doors!

Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up.

"Who here qualifies for the job of overseeing the kitchen? A person the Master can depend on to feed the workers on time each day.

"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?

"Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season?

"Who is a faithful, sensible servant, to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his household and feeding his family?

Someone the Master can drop in on unannounced and always find him doing his job. A God-blessed man or woman, I tell you.

It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.

If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward.

But if the servant is evil and thinks, 'My master won't be back for a while,'

abusing the help and throwing drunken parties for his friends--

and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.

"They answered, "There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.'

"'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'

But the wise answered, saying, "No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.'

But the others replied, 'We don't have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.'

"They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.

"But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

"He answered, "Do I know you? I don't think I know you.'

"But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'

But he answered and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.'

"So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.
