The watchmen call out, "Who goes there, marching out of Edom, out of Bozrah in clothes dyed red? Name yourself, so splendidly dressed, advancing, bristling with power!It is I: I speak what is right, I, mighty to save!"

Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? "It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save."

Who is this who comes from Edom, With dyed garments from Bozrah, This One who is glorious in His apparel, Traveling in the greatness of His strength?-- "I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save."

Who is this who comes from Edom, from the city of Bozrah, with his clothing stained red? Who is this in royal robes, marching in the greatness of his strength? "It is I, the LORD, announcing your salvation! It is I, the LORD, who is mighty to save!"

"And why are your robes so red, your clothes dyed red like those who tread grapes?"

Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress?

Isa.63.2

Why is Your apparel red, And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?

Isa.63.2

Why are your clothes so red, as if you have been treading out grapes?

Isa.63.3

"I've been treading the winepress alone. No one was there to help me. Angrily, I stomped the grapes; raging, I trampled the people. Their blood spurted all over me--all my clothes were soaked with blood.

"I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.

"I have trodden the winepress alone, And from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, And trampled them in My fury; Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, And I have stained all My robes.

"I have trodden the winepress alone; no one was there to help me. In my anger I have trampled my enemies as if they were grapes. In my fury I have trampled my foes. It is their blood that has stained my clothes.

Isa.63.4

I was set on vengeance. The time for redemption had arrived.

For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption has come.

For the day of vengeance is in My heart, And the year of My redeemed has come.

For the time has come for me to avenge my people, to ransom them from their oppressors.

I looked around for someone to help -no one. I couldn't believe it -not one volunteer. So I went ahead and did it myself, fed and fueled by my rage.

I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so my own arm worked salvation for me, and my own wrath sustained me.

I looked, but there was no one to help, And I wondered That there was no one to uphold; Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me; And My own fury, it sustained Me.

I looked, but no one came to help my people. I was amazed and appalled at what I saw. So I executed vengeance alone; unaided, I passed down judgment.

I trampled the people in my anger, crushed them under foot in my wrath, soaked the earth with their lifeblood."

I trampled the nations in my anger; in my wrath I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground."

I have trodden down the peoples in My anger, Made them drunk in My fury, And brought down their strength to the earth."

I crushed the nations in my anger and made them stagger and fall to the ground."

Isa.63.7

I'll make a list of GOD's gracious dealings, all the things GOD has done that need praising, All the generous bounties of GOD, his great goodness to the family of Israel--Compassion lavished, love extravagant.

I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which he is to be praised, according to all the LORD has done for us- yes, the many good things he has done for the house of Israel, according to his compassion and many kindnesses.

I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD And the praises of the LORD, According to all that the LORD has bestowed on us, And the great goodness toward the house of Israel, Which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, According to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.

I will tell of the LORD's unfailing love. I will praise the LORD for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to his mercy and love.

He said, "Without question these are my people, children who would never betray me." So he became their Savior.

He said, "Surely they are my people, sons who will not be false to me"; and so he became their Savior.

For He said, "Surely they are My people, Children who will not lie." So He became their Savior.

He said, "They are my very own people. Surely they will not be false again." And he became their Savior.

Isa.63.9

In all their troubles, he was troubled, too. He didn't send someone else to help them. He did it himself, in person. Out of his own love and pity he redeemed them. He rescued them and carried them along for a long, long time.

In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

In all their suffering he also suffered, and he personally rescued them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the years.

But they turned on him; they grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned on them, became their enemy and fought them.

Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.

But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.

But they rebelled against him and grieved his Holy Spirit. That is why he became their enemy and fought against them.

Then they remembered the old days, the days of Moses, God's servant: "Where is he who brought the shepherds of his flock up and out of the sea? And what happened to the One who set his Holy Spirit within them?

Then his people recalled the days of old, the days of Moses and his people- where is he who brought them through the sea, with the shepherd of his flock? Where is he who set his Holy Spirit among them,

Then he remembered the days of old, Moses and his people, saying: "Where is He who brought them up out of the sea With the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit within them,

Then they remembered those days of old when Moses led his people out of Egypt. They cried out, "Where is the one who brought Israel through the sea, with Moses as their shepherd? Where is the one who sent his Holy Spirit to be among his people?

Who linked his arm with Moses' right arm, divided the waters before them, Making him famous ever after,

who sent his glorious arm of power to be at Moses' right hand, who divided the waters before them, to gain for himself everlasting renown,

Who led them by the right hand of Moses, With His glorious arm, Dividing the water before them To make for Himself an everlasting name,

Where is the one whose power divided the sea before them, when Moses lifted up his hand, establishing his reputation forever?

Isa.63.13

and led them through the muddy abyss as surefooted as horses on hard, level ground?

Isa.63.13

who led them through the depths? Like a horse in open country, they did not stumble;

Isa.63.13

Who led them through the deep, As a horse in the wilderness, That they might not stumble?"

Where is the one who led them through the bottom of the sea? They were like fine stallions racing through the desert, never stumbling.

Isa.63.14

Like a herd of cattle led to pasture, the Spirit of GOD gave them rest." That's how you led your people! That's how you became so famous!

Isa.63.14

like cattle that go down to the plain, they were given rest by the Spirit of the LORD. This is how you guided your people to make for yourself a glorious name.

Isa.63.14

As a beast goes down into the valley, And the Spirit of the LORD causes him to rest, So You lead Your people, To make Yourself a glorious name.

Isa.63.14

As with cattle going down into a peaceful valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. You led your people, LORD, and gained a magnificent reputation."

Isa.63.15

Look down from heaven, look at us! Look out the window of your holy and magnificent house! Whatever happened to your passion, your famous mighty acts, Your heartfelt pity, your compassion? Why are you holding back?

Isa.63.15

Look down from heaven and see from your lofty throne, holy and glorious. Where are your zeal and your might? Your tenderness and compassion are withheld from us.

Isa.63.15

Look down from heaven, And see from Your habitation, holy and glorious. Where are Your zeal and Your strength, The yearning of Your heart and Your mercies toward me? Are they restrained?

LORD, look down from heaven and see us from your holy, glorious home. Where is the passion and the might you used to show on our behalf? Where are your mercy and compassion now?

Isa.63.16

You are our Father. Abraham and Israel are long dead. They wouldn't know us from Adam. But you're our living Father, our Redeemer, famous from eternity!

But you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us; you, O LORD, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.

Doubtless You are our Father, Though Abraham was ignorant of us, And Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.

Surely you are still our Father! Even if Abraham and Jacob would disown us, LORD, you would still be our Father. You are our Redeemer from ages past.

Why, GOD, did you make us wander from your ways? Why did you make us cold and stubborn so that we no longer worshiped you in awe? Turn back for the sake of your servants. You own us! We belong to you!

Why, O LORD, do you make us wander from your ways and harden our hearts so we do not revere you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes that are your inheritance.

O LORD, why have You made us stray from Your ways, And hardened our heart from Your fear? Return for Your servants' sake, The tribes of Your inheritance.

LORD, why have you allowed us to turn from your path? Why have you given us stubborn hearts so we no longer fear you? Return and help us, for we are your servants and your special possession.

For a while your holy people had it good, but now our enemies have wrecked your holy place.

For a little while your people possessed your holy place, but now our enemies have trampled down your sanctuary.

Your holy people have possessed it but a little while; Our adversaries have trodden down Your sanctuary.

How briefly your holy people possessed the holy place, and now our enemies have destroyed it.

For a long time now, you've paid no attention to us. It's like you never knew us.

We are yours from of old; but you have not ruled over them, they have not been called by your name.

We have become like those of old, over whom You never ruled, Those who were never called by Your name.

LORD, why do you treat us as though we never belonged to you? Why do you act as though we had never been known as your people?

Oh, that you would rip open the heavens and descend, make the mountains shudder at your presence--

Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!

Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That the mountains might shake at Your presence--

Oh, that you would burst from the heavens and come down! How the mountains would quake in your presence!

As when a forest catches fire, as when fire makes a pot to boil--

As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you!

Isa.64.2

As fire burns brushwood, As fire causes water to boil-- To make Your name known to Your adversaries, That the nations may tremble at Your presence!

Isa.64.2

As fire causes wood to burn and water to boil, your coming would make the nations tremble. Then your enemies would learn the reason for your fame!

Isa.64.3

To shock your enemies into facing you, make the nations shake in their boots! You did terrible things we never expected, descended and made the mountains shudder at your presence.

Isa.64.3

For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.

Isa.64.3

When You did awesome things for which we did not look, You came down, The mountains shook at Your presence.

Isa.64.3

When you came down long ago, you did awesome things beyond our highest expectations. And oh, how the mountains quaked!

Isa.64.4

Since before time began no one has ever imagined, No ear heard, no eye seen, a God like you who works for those who wait for him.

Isa.64.4

Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.

Isa.64.4

For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.

For since the world began, no ear has heard, and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him!

Isa.64.5

You meet those who happily do what is right, who keep a good memory of the way you work. But how angry you've been with us! We've sinned and kept at it so long! Is there any hope for us? Can we be saved?

Isa.64.5

You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved?

Isa.64.5

You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned-- In these ways we continue; And we need to be saved.

Isa.64.5

You welcome those who cheerfully do good, who follow godly ways. But we are not godly. We are constant sinners, so your anger is heavy on us. How can people like us be saved?

Isa.64.6

We're all sin-infected, sin-contaminated. Our best efforts are grease-stained rags. We dry up like autumn leaves--sin-dried, we're blown off by the wind.

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Isa.64.6

But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.

Isa.64.6

We are all infected and impure with sin. When we proudly display our righteous deeds, we find they are but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall. And our sins, like the wind, sweep us away.

Isa.64.7

No one prays to you or makes the effort to reach out to you Because you've turned away from us, left us to stew in our sins.

Isa.64.7

No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and made us waste away because of our sins.

Isa.64.7

And there is no one who calls on Your name, Who stirs himself up to take hold of You; For You have hidden Your face from us, And have consumed us because of our iniquities.

Isa.64.7

Yet no one calls on your name or pleads with you for mercy. Therefore, you have turned away from us and turned us over to our sins.

Still, GOD, you are our Father. We're the clay and you're our potter: All of us are what you made us.

Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.

And yet, LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We are all formed by your hand.

Don't be too angry with us, O GOD. Don't keep a permanent account of wrongdoing. Keep in mind, please, we are your people--all of us.

Do not be angry beyond measure, O LORD; do not remember our sins forever. Oh, look upon us, we pray, for we are all your people.

Do not be furious, O LORD, Nor remember iniquity forever; Indeed, please look--we all are Your people!

Oh, don't be so angry with us, LORD. Please don't remember our sins forever. Look at us, we pray, and see that we are all your people.

Your holy cities are all ghost towns: Zion's a ghost town, Jerusalem's a field of weeds.

Your sacred cities have become a desert; even Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a desolation.

Your holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

Your holy cities are destroyed; even Jerusalem is a desolate wilderness.

Our holy and beautiful Temple, which our ancestors filled with your praises, Was burned down by fire, all our lovely parks and gardens in ruins.

Our holy and glorious temple, where our fathers praised you, has been burned with fire, and all that we treasured lies in ruins.

Our holy and beautiful temple, Where our fathers praised You, Is burned up with fire; And all our pleasant things are laid waste.

The holy, beautiful Temple where our ancestors praised you has been burned down, and all the things of beauty are destroyed.

In the face of all this, are you going to sit there unmoved, GOD? Aren't you going to say something? Haven't you made us miserable long enough?

After all this, O LORD, will you hold yourself back? Will you keep silent and punish us beyond measure?

Will You restrain Yourself because of these things, O LORD? Will You hold Your peace, and afflict us very severely?

After all this, LORD, must you still refuse to help us? Will you continue to be silent and punish us?

"I've made myself available to those who haven't bothered to ask. I'm here, ready to be found by those who haven't bothered to look. I kept saying "I'm here, I'm right here' to a nation that ignored me.

"I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, 'Here am I, here am I.'

"I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, "Here I am, here I am,' To a nation that was not called by My name.

The LORD says, "People who never before inquired about me are now asking about me. I am being found by people who were not looking for me. To them I have said, `I am here!'

I reached out day after day to a people who turned their backs on me, People who make wrong turns, who insist on doing things their own way.

Isa.65.2

All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations-

Isa.65.2

I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, According to their own thoughts;

Isa.65.2

"I opened my arms to my own people all day long, but they have rebelled. They follow their own evil paths and thoughts.

Isa.65.3

They get on my nerves, are rude to my face day after day, Make up their own kitchen religion, a potluck religious stew.

Isa.65.3

a people who continually provoke me to my very face, offering sacrifices in gardens and burning incense on altars of brick;

Isa.65.3

A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; Who sacrifice in gardens, And burn incense on altars of brick;

Isa.65.3

All day long they insult me to my face by worshiping idols in their sacred gardens. They burn incense on the rooftops of their homes.

Isa.65.4

They spend the night in tombs to get messages from the dead, Eat forbidden foods and drink a witch's brew of potions and charms.

Isa.65.4

who sit among the graves and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs, and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat;

Isa.65.4

Who sit among the graves, And spend the night in the tombs; Who eat swine's flesh, And the broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

Isa.65.4

At night they go out among the graves and secret places to worship evil spirits. They also eat pork and other forbidden foods.

Isa.65.5

They say, "Keep your distance. Don't touch me. I'm holier than thou.' These people gag me. I can't stand their stench.

Isa.65.5

who say, 'Keep away; don't come near me, for I am too sacred for you!' Such people are smoke in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.

Isa.65.5

Who say, "Keep to yourself, Do not come near me, For I am holier than you!' These are smoke in My nostrils, A fire that burns all the day.

Isa.65.5

Yet they say to each other, `Don't come too close or you will defile me! I am holier than you!' They are a stench in my nostrils, an acrid smell that never goes away.

Isa.65.6

Look at this! Their sins are all written out--I have the list before me. I'm not putting up with this any longer. I'll pay them the wages

"See, it stands written before me: I will not keep silent but will pay back in full; I will pay it back into their laps-

Isa.65.6

"Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silence, but will repay-- Even repay into their bosom--

Isa.65.6

"Look, my decree is written out in front of me: I will not stand silent; I will repay them in full! Yes, I will repay them--

Isa.65.7

They have coming for their sins. And for the sins of their parents lumped in, a bonus." GOD says so. "Because they've practiced their blasphemous worship, mocking me at their hillside shrines, I'll let loose the consequences and pay them in full for their actions." [JC]

both your sins and the sins of your fathers," says the LORD. "Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and defied me on the hills, I will measure into their laps the full payment for their former deeds."

Your iniquities and the iniquities of your fathers together," Says the LORD, "Who have burned incense on the mountains And blasphemed Me on the hills; Therefore I will measure their former work into their bosom."

Isa.65.7

both for their own sins and for those of their ancestors," says the LORD. "For they also burned incense on the mountains and insulted me on the hills. I will pay them back in full!

Isa.65.8

GOD's Message: "But just as one bad apple doesn't ruin the whole bushel, there are still plenty of good apples left. So I'll preserve those in Israel who obey me. I won't destroy the whole nation.

Isa.65.8

This is what the LORD says: "As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes and men say, 'Don't destroy it, there is yet some good in it,' so will I do in behalf of my servants; I will not destroy them all.

Isa.65.8

Thus says the LORD: "As the new wine is found in the cluster, And one says, "Do not destroy it, For a blessing is in it,' So will I do for My servants' sake, That I may not destroy them all.

Isa.65.8

"But I will not destroy them all," says the LORD. "For just as good grapes are found among a cluster of bad ones (and someone will say, `Don't throw them all away--there are some good grapes there!'), so I will not destroy all Israel. For I still have true servants there.

Isa.65.9

I'll bring out my true children from Jacob and the heirs of my mountains from Judah. My chosen will inherit the land, my servants will move in.

I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah those who will possess my mountains; my chosen people will inherit them, and there will my servants live.

Isa.65.9

I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, And from Judah an heir of My mountains; My elect shall inherit it, And My servants shall dwell there.

Isa.65.9

I will preserve a remnant of the people of Israel and of Judah to possess my land. Those I choose will inherit it and serve me there.

Isa.65.10

The lush valley of Sharon in the west will be a pasture for flocks, And in the east, the valley of Achor, a place for herds to graze. These will be for the people who bothered to reach out to me, who wanted me in their lives, who actually bothered to look for me. [JC]

Sharon will become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a resting place for herds, for my people who seek me.

Isa.65.10

Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, And the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down, For My people who have sought Me.

Isa.65.10

For my people who have searched for me, the plain of Sharon will again be filled with flocks, and the valley of Achor will be a place to pasture herds.

Isa.65.11

"But you who abandon me, your GOD, who forget the holy mountains, Who hold dinners for Lady Luck and throw cocktail parties for Sir Fate,

"But as for you who forsake the LORD and forget my holy mountain, who spread a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny,

"But you are those who forsake the LORD, Who forget My holy mountain, Who prepare a table for Gad, And who furnish a drink offering for Meni.

"But because the rest of you have forsaken the LORD and his Temple and worship the gods of Fate and Destiny,

Well, you asked for it. Fate it will be: your destiny, Death. For when I invited you, you ignored me; when I spoke to you, you brushed me off. You did the very things I exposed as evil; you chose what I hate."

I will destine you for the sword, and you will all bend down for the slaughter; for I called but you did not answer, I spoke but you did not listen. You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me."

Therefore I will number you for the sword, And you shall all bow down to the slaughter; Because, when I called, you did not answer; When I spoke, you did not hear, But did evil before My eyes, And chose that in which I do not delight."

I will `destine' you to the sword. All of you will bow before the executioner, for when I called, you did not answer. When I spoke, you did not listen. You deliberately sinned--before my very eyes--and chose to do what you know I despise."

Therefore, this is the Message from the Master, GOD: "My servants will eat, and you'll go hungry; My servants will drink, and you'll go thirsty; My servants will rejoice, and you'll hang your heads.

Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "My servants will eat, but you will go hungry; my servants will drink, but you will go thirsty; my servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, My servants shall eat, But you shall be hungry; Behold, My servants shall drink, But you shall be thirsty; Behold, My servants shall rejoice, But you shall be ashamed;

Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "You will starve, but my servants will eat. You will be thirsty, but they will drink. You will be sad and ashamed, but they will rejoice.

Isa.65.14

My servants will laugh from full hearts, and you'll cry out heartbroken, yes, wail from crushed spirits.

My servants will sing out of the joy of their hearts, but you will cry out from anguish of heart and wail in brokenness of spirit.

Isa.65.14

Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart, But you shall cry for sorrow of heart, And wail for grief of spirit.

You will cry in sorrow and despair, while my servants sing for joy.
