Isa.3.1

The Master, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, is emptying Jerusalem and Judah Of all the basic necessities, plain bread and water to begin with.

Isa.3.1

See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,

Isa.3.1

For behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah The stock and the store, The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;

Isa.3.1

The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will cut off the supplies of food and water from Jerusalem and Judah.

Isa.3.2

He's withdrawing police and protection, judges and courts, pastors and teachers,

Isa.3.2

the hero and warrior, the judge and prophet, the soothsayer and elder,

Isa.3.2

The mighty man and the man of war, The judge and the prophet, And the diviner and the elder;

Isa.3.2

He will destroy all the nation's leaders--the heroes, soldiers, judges, prophets, diviners, elders,

Isa.3.3

captains and generals, doctors and nurses, and, yes, even the repairmen and jacks-of-all--trades.

the captain of fifty and man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.

Isa.3.3

The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the skillful artisan, And the expert enchanter.

Isa.3.3

army officers, honorable citizens, advisers, skilled magicians, and expert enchanters.

Isa.3.4

He says, "I'll put little kids in charge of the city. Schoolboys and schoolgirls will order everyone around.

Isa.3.4

I will make boys their officials; mere children will govern them.

Isa.3.4

"I will give children to be their princes, And babes shall rule over them.

Isa.3.4

Then he will appoint children to rule over them, and anarchy will prevail.

Isa.3.5

People will be at each other's throats, stabbing one another in the back: Neighbor against neighbor, young against old, the no-account against the well-respected.

Isa.3.5

People will oppress each other- man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the base against the honorable.

Isa.3.5

The people will be oppressed, Every one by another and every one by his neighbor; The child will be insolent toward the elder, And the base toward the honorable."

Isa.3.5

People will take advantage of each other--man against man, neighbor fighting neighbor. Young people will revolt against authority, and nobodies will sneer at honorable people.

Isa.3.6

One brother will grab another and say, "You look like you've got a head on your shoulders. Do something! Get us out of this mess.'

Isa.3.6

A man will seize one of his brothers at his father's home, and say, "You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!"

Isa.3.6

When a man takes hold of his brother In the house of his father, saying, "You have clothing; You be our ruler, And let these ruins be under your power,"

Isa.3.6

In those days a man will say to his brother, "Since you have a cloak, you be our leader! Take charge of this heap of ruins!"

Isa.3.7

And he'll say, "Me? Not me! I don't have a clue. Don't put me in charge of anything.'

Isa.3.7

But in that day he will cry out, "I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people."

Isa.3.7

In that day he will protest, saying, "I cannot cure your ills, For in my house is neither food nor clothing; Do not make me a ruler of the people."

Isa.3.7

"No!" he will reply. "I can't help. I don't have any extra food or clothes. Don't ask me to get involved!"

Isa.3.8

"Jerusalem's on its last legs. Judah is soon down for the count. Everything people say and do is at cross-purposes with GOD, a slap in my face.

Isa.3.8

Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.

Isa.3.8

For Jerusalem stumbled, And Judah is fallen, Because their tongue and their doings Are against the LORD, To provoke the eyes of His glory.

Isa.3.8

Judah and Jerusalem will lie in ruins because they speak out against the LORD and refuse to obey him. They have offended his glorious presence among them.

Isa.3.9

Brazen in their depravity, they flout their sins like degenerate Sodom. Doom to their eternal souls! They've made their bed; now they'll sleep in it.

Isa.3.9

The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.

Isa.3.9

The look on their countenance witnesses against them, And they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.

Isa.3.9

The very look on their faces gives them away and displays their guilt. They sin openly like the people of Sodom. They are not one bit ashamed. How terrible it will be for them! They have brought about their own destruction.

Isa.3.10

"Reassure the righteous that their good living will pay off.

Isa.3.10

Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.

Isa.3.10

"Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

Isa.3.10

But all will be well for those who are godly. Tell them, "You will receive a wonderful reward!"

Isa.3.11

But doom to the wicked! Disaster! Everything they did will be done to them.

Isa.3.11

Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.

Isa.3.11

Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him.

Isa.3.11

But say to the wicked, "Your destruction is sure. You, too, will get what you deserve. Your well-earned punishment is on the way."

Isa.3.12

"Skinny kids terrorize my people. Silly girls bully them around. My dear people! Your leaders are taking you down a blind alley. They're sending you off on a wild goose chase."

Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. O my people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.

Isa.3.12

As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths."

Isa.3.12

Children oppress my people, and women rule over them. O my people, can't you see what fools your rulers are? They are leading you down a pretty garden path to destruction.

Isa.3.13

GOD enters the courtroom. He takes his place at the bench to judge his people.

Isa.3.13

The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.

Isa.3.13

The LORD stands up to plead, And stands to judge the people.

Isa.3.13

The LORD takes his place in court. He is the great prosecuting attorney, presenting his case against his people!

Isa.3.14

GOD calls for order in the court, hauls the leaders of his people into the dock: "You've played havoc with this country. Your houses are stuffed with what you've stolen from the poor.

The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: "It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.

Isa.3.14

The LORD will enter into judgment With the elders of His people And His princes: "For you have eaten up the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.

Isa.3.14

The leaders and the princes will be the first to feel the LORD's judgment. "You have ruined Israel, which is my vineyard. You have taken advantage of the poor, filling your barns with grain extorted from helpless people.

Isa.3.15

What is this anyway? Stomping on my people, grinding the faces of the poor into the dirt?" That's what the Master, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, says.

What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?" declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

Isa.3.15

What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the faces of the poor?" Says the Lord GOD of hosts.

Isa.3.15

How dare you grind my people into the dust like that!" demands the Lord, the LORD Almighty.

Isa.3.16

GOD says, "Zion women are stuck-up, prancing around in their high heels, Making eyes at all the men in the street, swinging their hips, Tossing their hair, gaudy and garish in cheap jewelry."

The LORD says, "The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, tripping along with mincing steps, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.

Moreover the LORD says: "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, And walk with outstretched necks And wanton eyes, Walking and mincing as they go, Making a jingling with their feet,

Next the LORD will judge the women of Jerusalem, who walk around with their noses in the air, with tinkling ornaments on their ankles. Their eyes rove among the crowds, flirting with the men.

Isa.3.17

The Master will fix it so those Zion women will all turn bald--Scabby, bald--headed women. The Master will do it.

Isa.3.17

Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald."

Isa.3.17

Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the LORD will uncover their secret parts."

Isa.3.17

The Lord will send a plague of scabs to ornament their heads. Yes, the LORD will make them bald for all to see!

Isa.3.18

The time is coming when the Master will strip them of their fancy baubles--

In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,

Isa.3.18

In that day the Lord will take away the finery: The jingling anklets, the scarves, and the crescents;

Isa.3.18

The Lord will strip away their artful beauty--their ornaments, headbands, and crescent necklaces;

Isa.3.19

the dangling earrings, anklets and bracelets,

Isa.3.19

the earrings and bracelets and veils,

Isa.3.19

The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;

Isa.3.19

their earrings, bracelets, and veils of shimmering gauze.

Isa.3.20

combs and mirrors and silk scarves, diamond brooches and pearl necklaces,

Isa.3.20

the headdresses and ankle chains and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,

Isa.3.20

The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands; The perfume boxes,

Isa.3.20

Gone will be their scarves, ankle chains, sashes, perfumes, and charms;

Isa.3.21

the rings on their fingers and the rings on their toes,

Isa.3.21

the signet rings and nose rings,

Isa.3.21

the charms, The nose jewels,

Isa.3.21

their rings, jewels,

Isa.3.22

the latest fashions in hats, exotic perfumes and aphrodisiacs, gowns and capes,

Isa.3.22

the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses

Isa.3.22

the outer garments,

Isa.3.22

party clothes, gowns, capes, and purses;

Isa.3.23

all the world's finest in fabrics and design.

Isa.3.23

and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.

Isa.3.23

the purses, The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.

Isa.3.23

their mirrors, linen garments, head ornaments, and shawls.

Isa.3.24

Instead of wearing seductive scents, these women are going to smell like rotting cabbages; Instead of modeling flowing gowns, they'll be sporting rags; Instead of their stylish hairdos, scruffy heads; Instead of beauty marks, scabs and scars.

Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.

Isa.3.24

And so it shall be: Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench; Instead of a sash, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, baldness; Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.

Isa.3.24

Instead of smelling of sweet perfume, they will stink. They will wear ropes for sashes, and their well-set hair will fall out. They will wear rough sackcloth instead of rich robes. Their beauty will be gone. Only shame will be left to them.

Isa.3.25

Your finest fighting men will be killed, your soldiers left dead on the battlefield.

Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.

Isa.3.25

Your men shall fall by the sword, And your mighty in the war.

Isa.3.25

The men of the city will die in battle.

Isa.3.26

The entrance gate to Zion will be clotted with people mourning their dead--A city stooped under the weight of her loss, brought to her knees by her sorrows. [JC]

The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.

Isa.3.26

Her gates shall lament and mourn, And she being desolate shall sit on the ground.

Isa.3.26

The gates of Jerusalem will weep and mourn. The city will be like a ravaged woman, huddled on the ground.

Isa.4.1

That will be the day when seven women will gang up on one man, saying, "We'll take care of ourselves, get our own food and clothes. Just give us a child. Make us pregnant so we'll have something to live for!"

Isa.4.1

In that day seven women will take hold of one man and say, "We will eat our own food and provide our own clothes; only let us be called by your name. Take away our disgrace!"

Isa.4.1

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, "We will eat our own food and wear our own apparel; Only let us be called by your name, To take away our reproach."

Isa.4.1

In that day few men will be left alive. Seven women will fight over each of them and say, "Let us all marry you! We will provide our own food and clothing. Only let us be called by your name so we won't be mocked as old maids."

Isa.4.2

And that's when GOD's Branch will sprout green and lush. The produce of the country will give Israel's survivors something to be proud of again. Oh, they'll hold their heads high!

Isa.4.2

In that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of the survivors in Israel.

Isa.4.2

In that day the Branch of the LORD shall be beautiful and glorious; And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing For those of Israel who have escaped.

Isa.4.2

But in the future, Israel--the branch of the LORD--will be lush and beautiful, and the fruit of the land will be the pride of its people.

Isa.4.3

Everyone left behind in Zion, all the discards and rejects in Jerusalem, will be reclassified as "holy"--alive and therefore precious.

Isa.4.3

Those who are left in Zion, who remain in Jerusalem, will be called holy, all who are recorded among the living in Jerusalem.

Isa.4.3

And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy--everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem.

Isa.4.3

All those whose names are written down, who have survived the destruction of Jerusalem, will be a holy people.

Isa.4.4

GOD will give Zion's women a good bath. He'll scrub the bloodstained city of its violence and brutality, purge the place with a firestorm of judgment.

Isa.4.4

The Lord will wash away the filth of the women of Zion; he will cleanse the bloodstains from Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.

Isa.4.4

When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning,

Isa.4.4

The Lord will wash the moral filth from the women of Jerusalem. He will cleanse Jerusalem of its bloodstains by a spirit of judgment that burns like fire.

Isa.4.5

Then GOD will bring back the ancient pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night and mark Mount Zion and everyone in it with his glorious presence, his immense, protective presence,

Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night; over all the glory will be a canopy.

then the LORD will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering.

Then the LORD will provide shade for Jerusalem and all who assemble there. There will be a canopy of smoke and cloud throughout the day and clouds of fire at night, covering the glorious land.

shade from the burning sun and shelter from the driving rain.

It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.

And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.

I'll sing a ballad to the one I love, a love ballad about his vineyard: The one I love had a vineyard, a fine, well-placed vineyard.

He hoed the soil and pulled the weeds, and planted the very best vines. He built a lookout, built a winepress, a vineyard to be proud of. He looked for a vintage yield of grapes, but for all his pains he got junk grapes.

He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.

"Now listen to what I'm telling you, you who live in Jerusalem and Judah. What do you think is going on between me and my vineyard?

"Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard.

"And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge, please, between Me and My vineyard.

"Now, you people of Jerusalem and Judah, you have heard the case; you be the judges.

Can you think of anything I could have done to my vineyard that I didn't do? When I expected good grapes, why did I get bitter grapes?

What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad?

Isa.5.4

What more could have been done to My vineyard That I have not done in it? Why then, when I expected it to bring forth good grapes, Did it bring forth wild grapes?

What more could I have done to cultivate a rich harvest? Why did my vineyard give me wild grapes when I expected sweet ones?

"Well now, let me tell you what I'll do to my vineyard: I'll tear down its fence and let it go to ruin. I'll knock down the gate and let it be trampled.

Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled.

And now, please let Me tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be burned; And break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down.

Now this is what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will tear down its fences and let it be destroyed. I will break down its walls and let the animals trample it.

Isa.5.6

I'll turn it into a patch of weeds, untended, uncared for--thistles and thorns will take over. I'll give orders to the clouds: "Don't rain on that vineyard, ever!'"

I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it."

I will lay it waste; It shall not be pruned or dug, But there shall come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds That they rain no rain on it."

I will make it a wild place. I will not prune the vines or hoe the ground. I will let it be overgrown with briers and thorns. I will command the clouds to drop no more rain on it."

Do you get it? The vineyard of GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies is the country of Israel. All the men and women of Judah are the garden he was so proud of. He looked for a crop of justice and saw them murdering each other. He looked for a harvest of righteousness and heard only the moans of victims.

The vineyard of the LORD Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the garden of his delight. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

Isa.5.7

For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

Isa.5.7

This is the story of the LORD's people. They are the vineyard of the LORD Almighty. Israel and Judah are his pleasant garden. He expected them to yield a crop of justice, but instead he found bloodshed. He expected to find righteousness, but instead he heard cries of oppression.

Don't put it off; don't frustrate God's work by showing up late, throwing a question mark over everything we're doing.

But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses,

In everything we do we try to show that we are true ministers of God. We patiently endure troubles and hardships and calamities of every kind.

when we're beaten up, jailed, and mobbed; working hard, working late, working without eating;

in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger;

in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings;

We have been beaten, been put in jail, faced angry mobs, worked to exhaustion, endured sleepless nights, and gone without food.

with pure heart, clear head, steady hand; in gentleness, holiness, and honest love;

in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love;

by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love,

We have proved ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, our sincere love, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

when we're telling the truth, and when God's showing his power; when we're doing our best setting things right;

in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left;

We have faithfully preached the truth. God's power has been working in us. We have righteousness as our weapon, both to attack and to defend ourselves.

ignored by the world, but recognized by God; terrifically alive, though rumored to be dead; beaten within an inch of our lives, but refusing to die;

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
