Heb.4.1

For as long, then, as that promise of resting in him pulls us on to God's goal for us, we need to be careful that we're not disqualified.

For this Good News--that God has prepared a place of rest--has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn't believe what God told them.

If we believe, though, we'll experience that state of resting. But not if we don't have faith. Remember that God said, Exasperated, I vowed, "They'll never get where they're going, never be able to sit down and rest." God made that vow, even though he'd finished his part before the foundation of the world.

Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'"

For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: "So I swore in My wrath, "They shall not enter My rest,"' although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For only we who believe can enter his place of rest. As for those who didn't believe, God said, "In my anger I made a vow: 'They will never enter my place of rest,'" even though his place of rest has been ready since he made the world.

Somewhere it's written, "God rested the seventh day, having completed his work,"

And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."

For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: "And God rested on the seventh day from all His works";

We know it is ready because the Scriptures mention the seventh day, saying, "On the seventh day God rested from all his work."

but in this other text he says, "They'll never be able to sit down and rest."

And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest."

and again in this place: "They shall not enter My rest."

But in the other passage God said, "They will never enter my place of rest."

So this promise has not yet been fulfilled. Those earlier ones never did get to the place of rest because they were disobedient.

It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience.

So God's rest is there for people to enter. But those who formerly heard the Good News failed to enter because they disobeyed God.

God keeps renewing the promise and setting the date as today, just as he did in David's psalm, centuries later than the original invitation: Today, please listen, don't turn a deaf ear...

Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."

again He designates a certain day, saying in David, "Today," after such a long time, as it has been said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts."

So God set another time for entering his place of rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David a long time later in the words already quoted: "Today you must listen to his voice. Don't harden your hearts against him."

And so this is still a live promise. It wasn't canceled at the time of Joshua; otherwise, God wouldn't keep renewing the appointment for "today."

This new place of rest was not the land of Canaan, where Joshua led them. If it had been, God would not have spoken later about another day of rest.

The promise of "arrival" and "rest" is still there for God's people.

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;

God himself is at rest. And at the end of the journey we'll surely rest with God.

For all who enter into God's rest will find rest from their labors, just as God rested after creating the world.

So let's keep at it and eventually arrive at the place of rest, not drop out through some sort of disobedience.

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon's scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double--edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

For the word of God is full of living power. It is sharper than the sharpest knife, cutting deep into our innermost thoughts and desires. It exposes us for what we really are.

Nothing and no one is impervious to God's Word. We can't get away from it--no matter what.
