So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in the custody of his lord's house, saying, "Why do you look so sad today?"

They said, "We dreamed dreams and there's no one to interpret them." Joseph said, "Don't interpretations come from God? Tell me the dreams."

"We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them." Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams."

And they said to him, "We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it." So Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please."

And they replied, "We both had dreams last night, but there is no one here to tell us what they mean.Interpreting dreams is God's business," Joseph replied. "Tell me what you saw."

First the head cupbearer told his dream to Joseph: "In my dream there was a vine in front of me

Joseph said, "Here's the meaning. The three branches are three days.

"This is what it means," Joseph said to him. "The three branches are three days.

And Joseph said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.

"I know what the dream means," Joseph said. "The three branches mean three days.

Within three days, Pharaoh will get you out of here and put you back to your old work--you'll be giving Pharaoh his cup just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

When the chief baker saw that the first dream had such a good meaning, he told his dream to Joseph, too. "In my dream," he said, "there were three baskets of pastries on my head.

Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:

Pharaoh's birthday came three days later, and he gave a banquet for all his officials and household staff. He sent for his chief cup-bearer and chief baker, and they were brought to him from the prison.

Then he restored the head cupbearer to his cupbearing post; he handed Pharaoh his cup just as before.

He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh's hand,

Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand.

And then he impaled the head baker on a post, following Joseph's interpretations exactly.

but he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.

but he sentenced the chief baker to be impaled on a pole, just as Joseph had predicted.

But the head cupbearer never gave Joseph another thought; he forgot all about him.

Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Pharaoh's cup-bearer, however, promptly forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.

Two years passed and Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile River.

Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and gaunt, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the river.

Then seven other cows came up from the river, but these were very ugly and gaunt. These cows went over and stood beside the fat cows.

The skinny cows ate the seven healthy cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.

Then the thin, ugly cows ate the fat ones! At this point in the dream, Pharaoh woke up.

He went back to sleep and dreamed a second time: Seven ears of grain, full-bodied and lush, grew out of a single stalk.

He fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain, healthy and good, were growing on a single stalk.

He slept and dreamed a second time; and suddenly seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, plump and good.

Soon he fell asleep again and had a second dream. This time he saw seven heads of grain on one stalk, with every kernel well formed and plump.

Then seven more ears grew up, but these were thin and dried out by the east wind.

After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted-thin and scorched by the east wind.

Then behold, seven thin heads, blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them.

Then suddenly, seven more heads appeared on the stalk, but these were shriveled and withered by the east wind.

The thin ears swallowed up the full, healthy ears. Then Pharaoh woke up--another dream.

And the seven thin heads devoured the seven plump and full heads. So Pharaoh awoke, and indeed, it was a dream.

And these thin heads swallowed up the seven plump, well-formed heads! Then Pharaoh woke up again and realized it was a dream.

When morning came, he was upset. He sent for all the magicians and sages of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but they couldn't interpret them to him.

Now it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.

The next morning, as he thought about it, Pharaoh became very concerned as to what the dreams might mean. So he called for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt and told them about his dreams, but not one of them could suggest what they meant.

The head cupbearer then spoke up and said to Pharaoh, "I just now remembered something--I'm sorry, I should have told you this long ago.

Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, "Today I am reminded of my shortcomings.

Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying: "I remember my faults this day.

Then the king's cup-bearer spoke up. "Today I have been reminded of my failure," he said.

Once when Pharaoh got angry with his servants, he locked me and the head baker in the house of the captain of the guard.

Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he imprisoned me and the chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard.

When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker,

"Some time ago, you were angry with the chief baker and me, and you imprisoned us in the palace of the captain of the guard.

We both had dreams on the same night, each dream with its own meaning.

It so happened that there was a young Hebrew slave there with us; he belonged to the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams and he interpreted them for us, each dream separately.

and everything happened just as he said it would. I was restored to my position as cup-bearer, and the chief baker was executed and impaled on a pole."

Pharaoh at once sent for Joseph. They brought him on the run from the jail cell. He cut his hair, put on clean clothes, and came to Pharaoh.

So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.

Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh sent for Joseph at once, and he was brought hastily from the dungeon. After a quick shave and change of clothes, he went in and stood in Pharaoh's presence.

"I dreamed a dream," Pharaoh told Joseph. "Nobody can interpret it. But I've heard that just by hearing a dream you can interpret it."

Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it."

"I had a dream last night," Pharaoh told him, "and none of these men can tell me what it means. But I have heard that you can interpret dreams, and that is why I have called for you."

Joseph answered, "Not I, but God. God will set Pharaoh's mind at ease."

"I cannot do it," Joseph replied to Pharaoh, "but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires."

So Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace."

"It is beyond my power to do this," Joseph replied. "But God will tell you what it means and will set you at ease."

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "In my dream I was standing on the bank of the Nile.

But then seven other cows came up from the river. They were very thin and gaunt--in fact, I've never seen such ugly animals in all the land of Egypt.

Then the seven skinny, ugly cows ate up the first seven healthy cows.

These thin, ugly cows ate up the seven fat ones that had come out of the river first,

But you couldn't tell by looking--after eating them up they were just as skinny and ugly as before. Then I woke up.

"In my second dream I saw seven ears of grain, full-bodied and lush, growing out of a single stalk,

and right behind them, seven other ears, shriveled, thin, and dried out by the east wind.

Then behold, seven heads, withered, thin, and blighted by the east wind, sprang up after them.

Joseph said to Pharaoh, "Pharaoh's two dreams both mean the same thing. God is telling Pharaoh what he is going to do.

Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.

Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one; God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do:

"Both dreams mean the same thing," Joseph told Pharaoh. "God was telling you what he is about to do.

The seven healthy cows are seven years and the seven healthy ears of grain are seven years--they're the same dream.

The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream.

The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads are seven years; the dreams are one.

The seven fat cows and the seven plump heads of grain both represent seven years of prosperity.

The seven sick and ugly cows that followed them up are seven years and the seven scrawny ears of grain dried out by the east wind are the same--seven years of famine.

The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.

And the seven thin and ugly cows which came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads blighted by the east wind are seven years of famine.

The seven thin, ugly cows and the seven withered heads of grain represent seven years of famine.

"The meaning is what I said earlier: God is letting Pharaoh in on what he is going to do.

This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.

This will happen just as I have described it, for God has shown you what he is about to do.

Seven years of plenty are on their way throughout Egypt.

Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,

Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt;

The next seven years will be a period of great prosperity throughout the land of Egypt.

Gen.41.30

But on their heels will come seven years of famine, leaving no trace of the Egyptian plenty. As the country is emptied by famine,

but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.

but after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will deplete the land.

But afterward there will be seven years of famine so great that all the prosperity will be forgotten and wiped out. Famine will destroy the land.

there won't be even a scrap left of the previous plenty--the famine will be total.

The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe.

So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe.

This famine will be so terrible that even the memory of the good years will be erased.

The fact that Pharaoh dreamed the same dream twice emphasizes God's determination to do this and do it soon.
